It’s not bearing the fruit that Democrats had hoped. But did Merrick Garland really just take the wind out of Democrats’ sails with this one statement about January 6th?
The January 6th House Select Committee has been drawing out proceedings for as long as possible because they want to keep Donald Trump in the news.
Democrats cannot run on their abysmal record, so they have to run against Orange Man Bad.
They over-promised on the idea that Trump orchestrated a coup, but they’re under-delivering.One narrative that the Democrats are attempting to push is that Trump sent militiamen into the Capitol as part of some nonsensical insurrection plot.
But the Department of Justice announced that members of the militia group the Oath Keepers cannot blame Trump for entering the Capitol on January 6th.
Breitbart reported that “the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is arguing the founder and members of the Oath Keepers militia group who entered the U.S. Capitol on January 6 cannot blame former President Donald Trump for their actions. DOJ lawyers argued Trump lacked the authority to authorize an attack on the Capitol, which should prevent Oath Keepers’ lawyers from blaming the former President.” Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and the group itself have long been the focus of speculation they acted on behalf of government runners.
As such, many suspect the DOJ would seek to tightly control the investigation into charges against and trial of Oath Keepers over January 6.
Garland’s DOJ filing may be in keeping with that.
“President Trump did not have the authority to permit or authorize a conspiracy to forcibly oppose the authority of the government or the execution of the laws of the United States, nor could he have lawfully sanctioned the attack on the United States Capitol on Jan. 6 or any of the other criminal conduct allegedly perpetrated by defendants,” the DOJ filing read according to Breitbart’s report.
For once it could be that the Deep State is working at cross purposes with Pelosi’s January 6 witch hunt.
The entire notion that Trump masterminded a weaponless coup composed of retirees and guys with buffalo helmets is absurd.
An actual military-style coup would be effectively impossible in the United States.
It would require hundreds of thousands of troops and the seizure of all media outlets and courts of law.
Even then such a coup would fail because the American people would never go for it.
The idea that the American Republic was minutes away from falling is asinine.
The more pressing questions around January 6th involve the mystery of the unreleased security footage, agent provocateurs in the crowd, the negligence of security, and the intentional reduction of security on such a contentious day.
If Republicans regain control of the House in the midterms, and it looks like they will, Americans may finally get some of those answers.
It seems Garland and the DOJ want their exposure cleared long before then.
Allowing key Oath Keepers defendants allegedly involved in planning and carrying out a grand January 6 conspiracy to drag Donald Trump into the court proceedings would surely lengthen the trial.
Don’t expect Democrats to mount any real push back against Garland’s decision.
After all, January 6 was never about just getting Trump, it was also about setting the precedent to go after anyone who’s political speech they don’t like.
