It's Literally Highway Robbery

My wife has been growing watermelons for many many years now and she has it down to an art.

She recently began harvesting the first ones that have ripened and she took two of them to Judge Perkins and his wife.

While there, Mrs Perkins told her that this past Saturday they were passing through Hempstead Texas.

They've often stopped and purchased melons from one of the colored men that sell melons on the roadside on US 290 near Hempstead.

I've often seen these men throughout the years every melon season, but I've never needed to buy a melon so I've never stopped.

Well according to Mrs Perkins, you won't find a melon for less than $15 a pop.

But that's for the smaller Sugar Baby Melons.

The Black Diamond jungle plums are $20 bucks a pop.

And that's just down right highway robbery.

I was just wondering if maybe some of you might know what the price of a melon is in your neck of the woods.

My wife never sells her melons because we use most of them ourselves.

I juice melons habitually so I need plenty of melons to supply my habit.

But I had no idea that these babies would be selling for $20 bucks a piece.

I can remember seeing melons in the store for 3 and 4 dollars.

I just yesterday bought one of the baby single serve melons for 1.80. Normally $4.99. I will watch carefully. Thanks for the heads up.

Same here. We usually pick up ours at HEB. It's been years since we bought a road side one.

Once ‘Outrageously High’ Watermelon Prices Drop in Recent Weeks
What was once out of this world market prices for Florida’s watermelon producers have come back to earth a bit. Laura Land, a watermelon farmer from Branford, Florida, and a member of the Florida Watermelon Association discusses how prices have dropped in recent weeks.
“They were outrageously high (two weeks ago). They’re moving down pretty quickly. They’re in the $200 a bin FOB (Free on Board) or less; somewhere in the $175, $200 a bin FOB. They’ve drastically come down,” Land said. That equates to about 25-to-28 cents per pound. “They were more in the 35s at the beginning of (two) weeks ago.”

Market prices have dropped mostly because more watermelons are being harvested throughout Florida.
Harvests have moved from the Immokalee area to up around Arcadia.
More supply means lesser demand and a drop in the crop’s value.

Farmers need higher watermelon prices to compensate for the high input expenses they are having to pay more for.

“I think that will hopefully hold around these prices because sadly to say, that sounds like a big market, but when you double your fertilizer costs and you double your fuel costs, that’s going to be hard for farmers to pay out at those kinds of numbers unless they’ve got good crops,”
Land said. “In the last year, our labor prices have gone up 35%.
I just figured the new cost of our new liquid fertilizer that you’re having to give to the plants every day to produce a nice, good even crop, and it’s 75% more than last year.”

Looked it up and here they're saying there will be a shortage this year but Georgia watermelons will be mature by June thru July priced at 24 cents to 25 cents per pound. Lg is 24-26 lbs--Med 12-16 lbs---Small 3--7 lbs
