In my hometown: Based on the ruling today, they can't do this, booster mandate for University of Illinois students a step too far

On Jan. 6, University of Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones announced that all students, faculty and staff are required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster in response to the omicron variant, noting this action is part of the campus’ multi-layered approach to maximizing everyone’s safety.

As the parent of a healthy, double-vaccinated UI senior, I see absolutely no benefit to her from a third shot in response to a variant that is proving to produce milder symptoms yet be more infectious than previous versions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In fact, there is mounting evidence in the research literature and among physicians and epidemiologists that requiring a booster shot for young, healthy people introduces more risk than benefit to the individuals.

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Professor Marty Makary (MD, MPH) recently wrote on Jan. 4 that university administrators are navigating unchartered waters with the booster mandates, “risking health complications in young people for the sake of beating back mild and asymptomatic infections.”

Further, Makary said in a Chicago radio interview on Jan. 6: “The risk of someone under age 30 dying of COVID with just the primary vaccine series and no booster is zero.

You cannot lower the number zero any further with a booster.”

One of the most prevalent harms is myocarditis, or heart inflammation, which can result in hospitalization, heart failure or sudden death, particularly among young men. Admittedly, both the virus and the vaccine can cause myocarditis. University of California San Francisco Professor Vinay Prasad (MD, MPH) recently analyzed a Nature Medicine paper from the United Kingdom that compared the incidence of heart issues between COVID-19-recovered and COVID-19-vaccinated men under age 40.

“Yes, sorry to break it to you, vaccines can have risks of myocarditis EXCEEDING risks of myocarditis from infection,” Prasad wrote in his Substack article.

I’m sure members of the university COVID-19 task force could counter with another research paper that challenges this conclusion on myocarditis risk. That only strengthens my point. Given the conflicting research and the uncertainty, the university must allow students to exercise their own judgment on the matter. Students must have sovereignty over their own health and cannot be required to inject yet another dose of experimental mRNA medicine in their arms to complete their degree.

A more reasoned approach to boosters would be to allow individuals to weigh the risk-benefit factors based on their own situations and decide whether a booster is right for them.

Even before vaccines, it was clear the virus was far more dangerous to older adults and those with comorbidities like obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure than it was to young healthy individuals. Further, the rationale that drove vaccines for young, healthy people in the first place — preventing the spread to others — no longer holds true.

We now know that vaccinated individuals still catch and spread the virus — although they generally suffer less serious effects — which means the vaccines are actually a form of medicine that protects only the person taking the shot.

So, what is the university’s end game with boosters?

Force students to take a fourth shot in a few months when the efficacy of the booster wanes as it did with the original medication? Don’t laugh; the CEO of Moderna recently said a fourth mRNA dose will be needed by fall, and further doses are under consideration beyond that.

The reality is that no one knows the long-term effects of mRNA injections, especially on young people with more of life to look forward to. The booster mandate is just more of the same coercive, one-size-fits-all response that we have seen from the university from the beginning of the pandemic. I’ll close by saying that I am not an anti-vaxxer, nor a COVID-19 denier. No mask or tripled-masked, unvaxxed or double-boosted, I don’t care. I believe it is the right of the individual to make that decision based on the best available information and their own individual circumstances. I am speaking up because I know how hard it is for students to express their dissent to an institution with the power to ruin their future.

If you agree that booster mandates are unnecessary and potentially damaging to our students, please let your voice be heard. I encourage parents and students to contact Chancellor Jones and demand he drop the mandatory booster policy immediately.

Parky, I'm with you. Something you might consider. The drug companies have no liability for anything that goes wrong with the shots. Signed by all governments that distribute the vaccines. I can't see how that liability protection works with any other company or school or Government entity. Even the drug companies would be responsible for forcing the shots on their own employees. I am waiting that first law suit, but will be sad to see it happen because that will mean someone suffered needlessly or died.

I have been pissed off with restrictions against me since the beginning. But all had to suffer along with me. Tonight was the first time I had to suffer from discrimination over this. VAX proof to enter a tavern. I'm a true blood and my friends were meeting in a tavern tonight. I was turned away. Not sure how many others in our association that were affected, but I was. Blatant discrimination not based on valid medical science. With or without the VAX, all are equally liable to catch Covid or spread it. The differences between the two conditions are minor. And those that already had Covid are more immune then any who are just VAXXED, but still can't go into a tavern in Chicago.

And blacks in Chicago have a far lower level of VAXs then whites. We have a black mayor. So we have a ni66er discriminating against the other ni66ers in Chicago. Hate to have to use that reference that way, but it needs to be used that way to show the utter bull schitte in Chicago, the murder capital of America.

I'm working remotely right now and was called by HR yesterday informing me that I had to answer whether I was vaxxed or not as part of Biden's OSHA mandates, this even just before the Supreme Court decision came down. I told them that I respectfully decline to which they told me that they would have to put me down as unvaxxed. I told them that you gotta do what you gotta do and politely said good bye. I don't know if I'll be able to be as pleasant moving forward.
