Why I am not a " progressive ".
As everybody that participates in OPP knows, I am to the left of center. I consider myself an old fashioned FDR- JFK liberal, not a " progressive. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but not by me. I am for an increased minimum wage, better health care, and above all civil rights, as well as other liberal programs.
The new progressive movement a la Bernie Sands and Omar presents a problem for me. First of all, the progressive call to spend three trillion bucks plus on their program, without presenting a plan to pay for it. Thats a hell of a lot of money.
I don't like giving money to people without some kind of goal. It seems to me that if we give a lot of money to everybody that asks for it, we are doing them harm. We need to improve the little guys life, but not do away with the incentive to work. Why should anybody work, if they get money for doing nothing? Have you noticed that high school kids are not working in spite of all the help wanted signs all over the place? I don't know about you, but I started working at twelve, putting together the Sunday New York Times in a candy store. I haven't missed a days work since I was married fifty two years ago. Thats why I'm not a progressive!

If this was true you would not vote for Democrats. You say you are not a "progressive" but you never miss a chance to vote for one.

Are you sure that the balance scales would prove out your self assessment?
From your posts it would appear that you are very progressive.

I believe you not. One only needs to read your comments to know you are very left of center.

Liberty, I don't vote for progressives, I vote against the Trump people. I would never vote for Sanders or Omar. I would sooner write in for a politician I agree with.

Michael, From my posts, you can clearly see that I am a hundred percent against Trump. My issues are not progressive, they are American. I am for curtailing green house gasses. I am against Trump and everything he stands for, because he is a sociopath, not because he is conservative. If Trump were a Democrat,( which he once was) I would vote for anybody else, or write in for somebody else. I clearly am a passionate man in my beliefs. They are liberal, but not progressive. I do agree with some of the progressive ideas, but certainly not all. I am a liberal!

Back in the 60s, the Black militants, like the Black Panthers and other groups called the " new left " made it perfectly clear that Jews were not welcome in the movement. I considered that a betrayal of all those Jewish people that did so much to advance Blacks in American society. It's kind of like that. The current progressive movement is kind of like the new left of the 60s. The civil rights movement under leaders like MLK is more like the liberal movement.

I sum your past three posts in reference to this subject as this. Either you're for America or you're against America. And I'm leaning towards the second choice . AGAINST.

You are more progressive than you think. The ideals you mentioned are the same today as they were years ago. Today they call them progressive but the same as they always were.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is very high on Nation magazine's list of most important progressives of the twentieth century. He pioneered the drive to solve America's problems through government.
John F. Kennedy is far more complex to categorize. His voting record as a Representative and early on as a Senator was very conservative and his father, Old Papa Joe , was frequently at odds with FDR. It was almost a joke to witness him citing FDR as a model during his debates with Richard Nixon in 1960.
JFK and his father endorsed Joseph McCarthy's hearings. Robert F. Kennedy served on McCarthy's sub-committee and left after some disagreements with Roy Cohn. It was that time that led to his lingering reputation for ruthlessness.
It was JFK's early record plus his association with and endorsement of McCarthy with his exposure of FDR's beloved communists in government that led his widow, the redoubtable Eleanor, to try to deny Kennedy New York's Liberal Party's endorsement of JFK in 1960. Without it, Kennedy might have lost New York and, consequently, the election.
You state you're not a progressive. You could have fooled me. You're 'for for an increased minimum wage, better health care, and above all civil rights, as well as other liberal programs.' That's governmental intervention.
Oh, and BTW, saltwind78, I was born in Queens when my parents lived in South Jamaica. We moved to Mid-town Manhattan when I was about 4 or 5. We moved back to Queens, Bayside, when I was 14 and I went to Bayside High School and NYU at the campus it had in the Bronx. I have seen what the progressive policies of you and your 'liberals' have done to the great city of my nativity.

Progressives, & Ultra Liberals....seem to have a "Lemming complex"
Whatever their agenda, though it be suicidal, economically, or socially, are willing to "live for the moment", & throw all caution to the wind....{ "who cares about "the other guy" }...This mindset, is a mainstay, for the likes of Hillery, & her sordid companions, & supporters!
As for JFK, RFK, LBJ, Clinton, Biden, Obama, Their lifestyles seriously brought into play "serious questions" about integrity, morality, & genuine love of mankind, & integrity in politics!
In order to lead this nation, one must possess, & believe in Integrity, morality, family values, God & Country!
In spite of what the Supreme court thinks....{ for example}....America did not have to "re-define marriage", & allow the murdering of innocent human babies! { Just because a few men, & women on that court "agreed"....does not make it right!
