Deer flies and other stuff

A few days ago ChJoe and someone mentioned flies and misquotes...

What with the hot weather, deer flies, which are the true bain of northern Minnesota got a very early start, sketters are not such a big deal, I do not even feel most bite and the buzzing is the only irritation.

But darn deer flies.. bite lasts to dawn of the following day and often swells up and itches for a week..
So I told all who would listen that this year I would do something about them..

as in each year I looked at the famous Manitoba fly trap.. works very well according to every report and is patented..
Now new this year I had a choice.. $300 for the trap, or try the ball covered with sticky stuff which may work.. at $13 for 3 balls and the sticky stuff.. I gave it a shot.. Lordy, Lordy... they work.. truly work..

the down side is that I would need about 50 of them to really control those darn flies.. see 3 others on the road have hung some out as well after seeing my effort, maybe we can make a dent in the clouds of those suckers..

But for now, if we eat outside at the wrong time of day.. will be donating for sure.. blood bank be darned.

Other dumb things.. found out even at my age I do not know everything.. Raccoons kill and eat chickens. so with Fox, Coyote, Owls, Hawks and Eagles we are feeding the wildlife of half the darn county.. and this happened in the past as we had dozens or hundreds of birds/animals.. but now we have 8 chickens for my wife to spoil rotten.. proof that when you name your chicken, it no longer can be called food.. Gretchen was the victim last night and wife is in mourning even now.. even a duck named Daisy was murdered..

In more fun stuff, for much of the last week we had our great grand son staying with us. He loves staying at grammas house.. I think because grandpa is a pushover..

Anyway the bear bothering us this year showed up in day light few days and he was with me watching it roam around the yard and bird feeders.. then our super star dog and his buddy went after it,, lucky for them it chose to clime a tree.. so the little boy , Gramm and I watched it for some time.. then pulled off the dogs and moved back but still outside, the bear came down right away, looked everything over and ambled into the woods not to show up again . for days I hope..

the little guy was so excited he could not stay still , hardly talk.. told mom by phone, she is still POd that some old coot let the little guy in the same open yard with an adult bear.. it was large also.. not the biggest, that crown belongs to a huge sow 3 or 4 years ago. she got killed by a truck on the highway.. so large she got a write up in the local paper..

And so life in the north land goes on...

Try wearing light colored clothing and wipe your exposed skin areas with dryer cloths. Seems to work for skitters too. From the southern realms of Va. Mike

I have noticed that horse flies tend to bite people who are wet. At my local public pool while wet I am one and one. One horse fly bit me and got away, another one I killed.

Dryer cloths... that is one thing I have not tried.. nearly everything else under the sun has gotten a test over the years..

Blue as well as dark seems to attract them, blue literally calls them over for tea... that is why the balls with sticky stuff are bright blue and they work.. just need more..

I feel so much better now, knowing the darn things even live in Va...

Yes, one more favorite pest.. as luck would have it , even when we had dozens of horse we had very few horse flies..

I would say that a horse fly bite is even worse the the deer fly, but to even see a horse fly is rare and the deer flies come in clouds some years. Nasty...

good results on your counter attack for sure.. 50% is darn good..

When I had a dog I would run her in the woods and the deer flies would attack her before they went for me. They liked going for her head. I used to drive a white work van and in mid June sometimes I would park near a creek under the trees for lunch. The horse flies would land all over the van. They wouldn't attack me, they just seemed to love the white steel. If I left a crack open in the window they would get trapped inside the van. Too stupid to find their way out. Not as bad as having a wasp or bumble bee in the van.

Yeah light colors are good. There are some natural repellants that work well though I quit bothering and forget the brands. They are made with essential oils.

Deer flies are tenacious. They can’t be shooed off and its easy to kill them when they’re on you.
