No one is afraid of someone who just looks different than himself...
Curiosity controls a first meeting,
then,
confusion sets in when the person doesn't appear to see the world/society as we do,
then,
concern arises when one realizes there are no common standards by which to gauge interaction,
then,
fear/caution is the reaction to recognizing we are/may be at a serious disadvantage.
Fear is the last step after realizing a person is not able to be adequately anticipated/trusted. That is the result of discovering you have no clue as to how that person thinks... or having it demonstrated that he thinks nothing like you do.

Walk into a room full of ME Muslims and there will be a nervous shiver going down your spine before anyone opens their mouth

A natural response found in most creatures.

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
H.p. Lovecraft..
Fear is just as well a positive as it is a negative, depends on the situation~~Just don’t let either control you..

This explanation defies the reactions some have upon seeing someone who looks different, reactions that happen before their conscious mind can process the input.

Fear is a built-in survival mechanism since the beginning of mankind and everyone experiences it in their lives. It’s what a person does with their fear that’s important! Does it control the person or does the person control the fear. That’s the difference between a brave man and a coward!
This was said by a soldier in a discussion about being a soldier! I don’t remember who he was now or where I read it, but it was an epic statement that I’ll never forget! 🇺🇸👍

Cheap shot and without merit. A much better point of consideration is when the first non-ethnic/nonconforming meeting occurred. You take an example from an over-worked and over-advertised situation. The reaction you are showcasing is a response to a prefabricated opinion, not to the people involved.

Lovecraft is wrong. People cannot fear what they can't recognize. Fear is generated by belief in fabricated demons (speaking figuratively) and imaginary demonic activities. What is being feared is that which the fearful conjure up in their own imaginations.
Fear is a self-protection mechanism. It causes the body to be excessively cautious with heightened sensory awareness.

No it doesn't. As I said to Linda, people can't fear what they can't can't recognize. Any resulting fear is a product of imagination and absorbed propaganda, often religiously/culturally inspired.

Point to you...
Are there any people you have no preconceived perceptions of???

Fear is an automatic emotion that heightens or hinders our awareness..I agree.
Which is also why I closed with what I said..
