Christian Pastor Arrested in London for Quoting ‘Homophobic’ Bible Verses

Police in London arrested a Christian street preacher for allegedly causing “alarm and distress” to pedestrians for citing allegedly “homophobic” verses from Genesis.

On Friday, Pastor John Sherwood was preaching alongside Pastor Peter Simpson of the Penn Free Methodist Church outside the Uxbridge Underground Station — in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s own constituency.

Writing in the Conservative Woman on Tuesday, Pastor Simpson said that Sherwood preached on the final verses of Genisis 1, saying: “God’s design in creating mankind was to set human beings in families, headed by a father and a mother, not by two fathers or by two mothers. The distinction within mankind of just two genders, male and female, made in the image of God, constitutes the essence of God’s created order.”

Simpson said that the police informed them that three complaints were made in response to the street sermon.

He said that a police officer warned that he and Sherwood should avoid making any “homophobic statements” and that there is “no freedom to make statements which offend people”.

The police ultimately dragged Sherwood off his step stool and forcibly handcuffed the septuagenarian preacher.

“This dignified man of God, who is in his early 70s, was marched off to a nearby police car, as one of the helpers from my church cried out, ‘What has happened to us as a nation that a man can no longer preach from the Bible?” Pastor Simpson related.

Video of the incident was published on social media on Tuesday by the charity Christian Concern.

In a statement given to Premier Christian News, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “At 13:35hrs on Friday, 23 April, officers on patrol were flagged down by a member of the public who made them aware of a man allegedly making homophobic comments close to Uxbridge Underground Station.

“A number of other people also approached the officers with concerns about the man’s language.

“Officers spoke with the 71-year-old man and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of an offense under Section 5 of the Public Order Act.”

Simpson said that Sherwood spent the night in lockup in a detention center near Heathrow Airport and was not released until noon the following day. Sherwood reportedly remains under police investigation.

He relayed that during his detention, Sherwood was questioned by officers about what he would do if he had a homosexual child.

“It is surely the task of the police to ask questions about the specific alleged offense, not more general questions about why someone holds a personal view on an aspect of Biblical morality,” the Pastor noted.

PS. 80% of the churches in England have closed down or became Bingo halls. So, speaking the word of God is now an offense to many. Without a Constitution or freedom of speech law, they are at the mercy of the Government. When lack of morality holds precedent over the word of God, they are lost.

It is still in full effect.
Loving my neighbors, and caring for them and helping them when I can, does NOT imply that I have to celebrate, embrace, condone, or even accept their acts of sin against God.
Just as disagreeing with a person of color does not mean I am racist.
Just as stating that there are only two sexes does not mean I hate or fear transsexuals.
Just as proclaiming people should not be allowed to illegally cross our borders does not mean I am against immigrants or immigration.
Just as my calling God as Lord of All, and proclaiming His laws to the world, does not make me a hater.

If your IQ was just a bit higher you would understand he was not bashing anyone, he was speaking the word of God. Let me help your he was quoting the Holy Bible. If you can not see that, I am sorry for you.

You hate the Creator too...He is the original voice condemning homosexuality...it was basically equated with bestiality.

Do you call the Creator "oaf" too?

He was bashing gays. He was quoting a book of fairy tales. Not everyone shares your distorted take on reality

Ah! I see. If you disagree, or are "offended" by words, then it is OK to arrest someone? Are you justifying what was done to this man? Any speech you do not approve of is forbidden? Do you approve of such laws?

The loving thing to do is help your neighbors find their way back to God, not to send their directly to Satans army.

No he was presenting the word of God to help those who are confused and need Gods love to guide them back to the loving God who waits for them.

Cute way to try and avoid the questions. Criticizing a life style is not hate speech. Are you now defining hate speech as whatever you disapprove of? Or is it something more specific?

We each have our own beliefs. Trying to push your gods on to others is not loving them if it is trashing them

Depends on how you define "pushing".
If I am standing on a corner preaching the Word of God, and you do not want to hear it, then walk on past. It is free speech.
But if you walk away, locate a cop, and complain that you are "offended", then who is being the ass? You are denying me free speech.
Now, if I were to follow you, shout in your face, stand in your way, then that is a crime. That is a different matter entirely. But that is apparently not what was going on.
