We have a lot of deer up here, see them nearly every day.. but usually on the wood edges or on one of several trails.

Sunday morning, we had a "herd" of four in the yard next to the house doing as they wished with a nibble here and a snack there. For about 45 minutes they walked and roamed, while our wonderful dogs slept in peace indoors on the beds they so cherish.. not even a woof from the two of them.. fun..

we also had several over night guests so they got a kick out of it as well..

I so like it when a simple thing provides a bit of enjoyment..

Wish I had thought of a picture.. darn it..

We regularly have two groups of 4 that visit us. They love the corn we put out. Each group is does and last years fawns, no bucks. Breeding season is over and the bucks have moved to higher ground. During the heavy snows we put out a lot of food, in small amounts so there is less fighting among the does. If you are using corn as your deer food, DO NOT use the bags labeled "deer corn" which, according to several articles I have read, is allowed to have pesticides and other contaminates in it, use the feed corn for livestock, which has to be pesticide free according to state laws here, and probably in other states too.

Your 2 herds sound just like our one... fun to watch..

And, now I do feel dumb.. Corn.. we have a small pen behind the house, keep 4 Muscovy ducks and a small pan of corn for them.. I bet that is what the deer were really looking into.. they ambled just for the fun of it.. the pen is open a/c of snow is deeper then the gate level and will not close..

I have never used the "deer corn" but have eyed it many time.. now for sure that will not be my choice..

Stay safe and well, spring is going to come... someone said..

So get a large bag of Feed corn and sprinkle some out nightly, and some more out around noon. I do remember the year that we had 16 deer at one time, because of a snow storm. Put the feed out in about 6 places so they would not fight. We have more than 60 acres, so that is not hard to do.

Our deer are not so cute, they trash our fruit trees and bushes, I've gotten depredation permits so I could shoot them, now I have two big dogs that keep them out.

Had about a dozen geese rummaging around the leaves in our yard. Was a very strange site to see therm waddle up from the pond. Not sure what was under the leaves but they were having a good time. It is nice to view wildlife in their habitat although I don't particularly like deer because they're so destructive.

I spent Sat in a local forest preserve hiking for about 4 hours in foot deep snow to about 30 inches in snow banks. No snow shoes, Just sneakers and two pr of socks and a couple of plastic bags. Did find some slush as I crossed a frozen pond. They tend to melt a little near the northern shore where they get some sun. I looked down under a foot of snow and it was 3 to 4 inches of slush under the snow, and water. My feet were wet from here on and it got a little chilly later when we stopped. And we still hung out in the forest drinking beer and such for another 4 or 5 hours. Schitte happens. Great time.

But to get to the deer. We found one frozen carcass. Food for the raccoons later on. Nature does it's thing. Many holes in the snow where they dig down to the ground to bed down over night. Slipped into one of those and could hardly get out. With one hand in a Splint from a recent surgery, it was difficult getting out. You have to try and turn over and my position was somewhat compromised, But then you try to push your selves up with your arms. Now for the next problem. Your arms on the snow, sink down a foot into the snow, and not much leverage. But I made it. Twice. We also saw a lot of deer and they were coming within fifty feet of us. Probably looking for food. But if you feed them they start losing their instinct to forage on their own. And we didn't have any food.

I was out from 10:30AM to 6:00PM. Cool, but not cold. Feeling great. But about two hours later, I was finally home and sitting down to a steaming hot bowl of my home made chili and a movie. Then my 80 years finally hit me and I was sound asleep by nine in front of the TV. Damn, getting old is hell. But I'm not letting the old man in.

MMMM, maybe if I sprinkled in the right direction, they would walk right back in the woods...

16 is a bunch.. the most ever around here was back about 1990 or so, they ate right out of a corn crib we had then and trails so used we could walk down to the lake as if we were on a sidewalk..

that was abet to much but normally, I get a kick out of watching them..

all that ice and water is tough on sneakers.. and for sure on us guys of age.. sounds like a fine time but uncomfortable.. You do very well for a slightly aged fellow , keep it up..

I recall, years ago, bunch of us were smelt netting on Lake Superior and one of them slid on the slope of ice and ended up about 50 ft. in the lake.. that ended the night for him.. oh and it took a human chain of half drunk dummies to get him back..

It is them golden years we were promised would be so great..

So do we, but we are both getting arthritic so walks in the woods are out. As far as the deer eating too much and damaging our woods, they prefer the weeds to the flowers and we do not plant corn so don't have to worry about that. Our 2 1/2 acres that are planted with vegetable seeds every spring, having the deer eat the weeds now just makes it easier when we get the garden going. Many friends help with that chore and all of us get the produce from the garden, sort of a communal endeavor.

There were probably lots of bugs under the leaves, some alive, some very cold but not dead and a few dead. Most animals of the forest will eat the live ones, and the not quite dead ones, and the rats will eat the dead ones.

Nice planning...

That arthritis is no fun, have a knee with it.. so with a bad right foot and a bad left knee, I can hardly limp right..

As the Chinese say, I limp with both feet...

good morning and have a nice day..
