From my perspective, always playing the Devil's Advocate seems to be designed to provoke, annoy, madden, challenge, and generally to throw mud in the eyes of readers. When the ulterior motive is rather unclear, or seemingly taking opposite sides for the hell of it, it sparks all kinds of reactions that are not very helpful, especially in today's environment.
