An Expanded Dog Food Recall Has Been Issued Over Toxin Concerns And Affects More Than A Dozen Brands

The FDA has issued a dog food recall that affects more than a dozen brand names over concerns they could contain unsafe levels of aflatoxin.

Sunshine Mills announced a recall in early September on six different types of dog food after a product sample was found by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry to contain an unsafe level of aflatoxin. Now, the recall has been expanded to additional kinds of dog food within specific lot codes. This recall includes specific lot codes from foods like Whiskers & Tails Adult Recipe Complete Dog Food, Old Glory Hearty Beef & Chicken Flavor Dog Food, and Paws Happy Life Nutritionally Complete Dog Food. You can find full lot codes and product names in the full recall notice here.

According to the FDA, aflatoxin is a toxin produced by mold which can grow on corn and grains, which are then used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets. This can be present even without any visible mold on food. Pets with aflatoxin poisoning may experience sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and/or diarrhea. In severe cases, this toxicity can be fatal and in some cases, pets may suffer liver damage without any visible symptoms.

If your pet has symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning, contact a veterinarian immediately and if they have eaten the food but aren't showing any symptoms, you may still want to ask your vet about possible liver damage. You can contact the company listed on your pet food for instructions or simply throw it away in a way that does not allow children, pets, and wildlife to access it. Don’t feed the recalled products to animals and sanitize any surface it may have touched.
