Banning Chinese APPs shows US bullying
CHINADAILY

Although US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo clearly bears no goodwill toward China, the extent to which he tirelessly badmouths the country suggests this is a role that has been assigned to him.

In a regular news conference of the US State Department on Wednesday, he said that the US administration will step up its efforts to purge "untrusted" Chinese apps from the United States, claiming the Chinese-owned short-video app TikTok and messenger app WeChat are "significant threats", and it will expand its efforts to establish what the administration is calling a "clean network" — evidently one without any Chinese presence.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the actions "a textbook case of bullying", and said the intention of the US administration was to protect the US' "monopoly position in technology".

With the US cutting its financial support for science and technology due to the costly wars it waged in Afghanistan and Iraq, and China making rapid technological progress thanks to its increased spending during the same period, the US no longer enjoys the overwhelming dominance it once did in science and technology.

And with the rise of China's world-class technology companies coming at a time when a new digital revolution is underway, the anxiety in Washington has developed into an ever-growing dread that the US might lose the advantages in high-tech it had become accustomed to.

In addition to this, the fact that the performance of the US stock market is underpinned by the so-called MAGA (Make America Great Again) club, comprising Microsoft, Apple, Google (via its parent company Alphabet) and Amazon — the four US data giants with a market cap of more than $1 trillion each — means the US administration, which has linked its fortunes with theirs, views the rapid rise of Chinese internet companies as a threat and with a deep sense of foreboding.

As such, although Pompeo cited national security concerns as the reason, the purpose of the "clean network" campaign, which is dirty in both the ideas and the means, is to keep Chinese information technology companies on the ropes, so as to give the US some time to regain the commanding heights in high-tech.

But to achieve that, the US will have to input tremendous energy to raise an iron curtain to oppose market forces. That will have serious consequences for the global supply chains, and Chinese companies will not be the only ones to suffer.

That being said, despite the patience shown by China, in the hope that US policymakers will come to their senses and realize times have moved on from the 1980s, neither the country nor its companies can afford to not prepare for the worst.

Yet rather than seeking to revive the good old days when the US was the peerless cock of the walk, the US administration should consider that even the US with all its power and hubris can't turn back time.

Now it should go with the multilateral flow.

Agreed!

With the decrease in the practice of religion, even bad religion, America and the leading countries of Europe are increasingly becoming lost in the swamps of moral relativism without the aid of a moral compass. Freedom to do the right things is being replaced by license to do whatever you want. Undisciplined masses need a strong government to protect its citizens from the destructive forces of chaos but I fear western society is becoming undisciplined masses led by undisciplined government.

Mr. Canuckus, your writings about life in China combined with what I know about China's steady improvements in quality of exports and their burgeoning space program and military indicate to me that it won't be long before China with its enforced discipline and know-how becomes the equal of western world dominance. And after that...guess what!

We ought to be much more cooperative with China, forge alliances and do colossal things together!

Your post clearly negates the fact that Chins has spied on the USA for 6 decades and every president before Trump let them get away with it. The chicks have now come home to roost and Trump is going to, with my blessing, pluck their feathers.

China is the # 1 enemy of the USA. They have declared war and murdered 175,000 Americans. More Chinese chickens are going to be plucked because of it, but only if Trump is re-elected.

A satire: An American asked Buda: how does China build it's military so quickly? Buda says: Americans spend all their money on social programs and China spends it's money on the military and R & D.

China deserves all the hell that the USA can pour on it. China is evil.

Americans need an enemy. For a while it was brown folk, then for a minute it was N. Korea ( until Kim gave trump a prostate massage ), then Venezuela, but China remained in the cross hairs throughout. Why does the trump admin keep harping on China? Simple.......................they won't commit to authorizing and funding any trump towers. China did try to appease trump somewhat by granting Ivanka 7 trademarks.

So whats wrong withe US wanting to protect itself from having of stolen technology or anything else in the technology field?? China has made it a technological mission to hack many a country robbing it to learn more for themselves in the fields they go after.. Take for example how you are limited to your excess of technology but your government is not.

I say let China keep there technology and we will keep ours safe, secure and free of not only China but every country that wants to play the technology game.

As we have seen in the latest regarding wars it’s not boots on the ground, but the technology used in what is developed by the super powers that make a difference. So yes I say china keep yours America keep ours in each stay the hell out of the others. Of course we know that will never happen.

Chinese part propaganda is not deteriorating at all... Stronger than ever is more like it..

Well stated....

But in all honesty, any alliance with China should be treated with great suspicion and the knowledge that it is only as strong as its usefulness...

Within the next decade or two China, and quite possibly India, will surpass the US as superpowers....

Those countries may have qualities which seem to be in decline in my beloved USA- spirituality, discipline and rule of law. Without such qualities, dynasties falter and fail.

Keep your friends close and your "enemies" closer.
