The vagaries of Politics

Where I grew up in da Bronx in the 50s and 60s, I only knew other Catholics and Democrats. All were Irish. (Well maybe a few Italians.)

My whole family--Mother, father and 3 siblings--worked for Democratic Candidates. We handed out leaflets, went door-to-door for polls and signatures, and did voter registrations. Republicans were a scourge on this country, a party that cared nothing for the people and were as much a threat as the Soviet Union to America. We could not understand how any citizen of these United States could do that.

But then I started my own thinking at eighteen and registered as an Independent. This is what the Democratic machine was like at that time: my father confronted me about registering Interdependent the night I did; the polling center had told him. This shocked and devastated me. Talk about Big Brother. My mind drastically changed about party loyalty. Being Left or Right was an insult to clear thinking and judgment. A crime against humanity.

How we are raised, and the attitudes and values imparted to us by our parents has a strong bearing on how we interpret and internalize facts and observations.

I was raised in a strong Catholic environment, with a conservative Republican upbringing.

As time went on, I became very disenfranchised with most organized religions, especially the Catholic religion, and felt the leadership of both political parties was corrupt and self serving. Like you, I am now a registered independent voter. I tend to view things from a conservative/libertarian perspective, but don't like the idea of being labeled as such.

I admire those who are independent thinkers, and do not see the world in terms of black and white, especially in politics.

Dems and repubs make their coin off of the "us against them" paradigm - instead of just..........................us.

Nicely written, thank you. Independent Thinkers, as you mentioned, are not very appreciated but rather suspect of being disloyal to everything outside their own ego. Or are mostly seen as wishy-washy, fence-sitters, fearful of making a firm commitment to any certain set of ideals or principles, or to belong. How can you count on people like that? I have gotten that treatment for all my life since becoming an Independent fifty years ago. Even the churches I have belonged to over that time never treated me as one of them.

It is why the Jews have suffered persecution for a few millennia. Well, in a way. They did not refuse to dress and think like the people of any country they lived in; it was just living who they were. They stayed in a tight-net community, separate from all around them. How can you trust people like that? They naturally took their lifestyle as how to be in the world. Not exactly Independent Thinkers, their way was right, but they thought outside the box or not in sync with the majority. They did not conform. To me, an Independent Thinker does not conform to the popular feelings and ideas but weighs each issue as to its merits as being for the common good, as best as possible, what promotes freedom and justice but not necessarily along party line...or any lines. (We were terrible colorers.)
