On Fox News Tuesday, commentator Brit Hume leaned into the idea suggested by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick that the elderly should be willing to sacrifice themselves to coronavirus so younger people can go work and boost the stock market, telling host Tucker Carlson that such an idea was an “entirely reasonable viewpoint.”

Hmmm?

I must say I find that idea distasteful...

Especially coming from the side that is Anti-euthansia...

Gonna try and hold on to my grandmother and my parents... My wife is rather attached to hers as well...

Stay strong...

Euthanasia outcomes are certain. Disease outcomes are not certain. There is no correlation between the two ideas. I am in no hurry to die but if the choice is me or one of my progeny, I'll take the risk.

Certainly there is a correlation... They both involve choice... And death... Uncertainty plays a factor, but he is discussing the certainty of sacrifice...

And your progeny are not at risk... At least no more than yourself... Your death would in no way ensure their safety...

The core issue is not life or death as abstracts. Taking the risk of becoming a sacrifice is to prevent the economic destruction of the United States. There is no correlation. Euthanasia will benefit nothing to the country and the risk of death does not exist there, it is a certainty. The risk of death is a reasonable price to pay to go back to work and prevent an economic collapse that our progeny will have to suffer; and suffer they would. As for assurance, what in this life is assured,... to anyone?

Euthanasia has numerous benefits to society... It allows vital resources to be used by healthy productive members.. And releases communities from crippling obligations to members who no longer contribute...

Euthanasia tends to be used by folk who are already assured of death... It's a speeding up of the process..

And I'm unsure how effective working during an epidemic would be on halting a decline in the economy... It would put more burden on the healthcare system and require greater resources for the greater number of sick...

Unless you think that the elderly who become infected shouldn't be given medical care... That would be a true sacrifice... But I doubt there are many who would take that route...

In my mind, and the minds of many other elderly, the past is what we have and the future belongs to our young. It is absurd to sacrifice them for our benefit. Economic collapse in this country would be devastating to their futures because this country is and has been on the verge of a civil war. If this economy fails, I can assure you that a real shooting war will erupt here. The veneer of civilization is very thin among the human animals.

In the past, when cultures were at odds, the weaker group left the home territory to establish a new territory. Today there is no place to go to. If the groups were equal in strength, they went to war. The current situation in the USA sees two strong opposing groups and one on the fence. That makes war a certainty.
Any such breakdown in our society would be paid for in blood by our children. The hope of preventing that is worth the risk of catching a virus.

An American collapse will be felt around the world.

I can see that... Or perhaps something akin to the Cultural Revolution in China...

It seems to me that it would be more delaying the inevitable though... The system needs to change...

Your grandchildren's survival isn't tied to the stock market and if it were it would be a very sad day in our country. I do find it a bit interesting that you cons seem ready to off yourselves thinking that somehow your deaths will benefit your progeny. That's a sad idea indeed...

My grandchildren's future to live in a way of life I did is indeed tied to the stock market, the economy and the over-all financial health of our country.

There is a large gap between "survival" and the American way of life.....

Our economy was going down the tube long befor the virus when the regulations on banks and financial industry were relaxed they immediately went back to making risky loans that triggered the last recession when they had to be bailed out!
The government has been printing money and buy ing all these crapy loans so the banks can continue to make more of them.
Now we're tossing 500 billion at the economy whuch is the same as burning it!
Let's hope and pray I'm wrong

What's sad is your dishonest trolling and obvious hatred for half the country. Get a life before your hatred and bitterness eat you up.

The market is going to rebound. It increased 2000 points on just the hint of an agreement between Republicans and Democrats. The market isn't something to worry about but if you want to off yourself in the hope that your sacrifice will make it come up faster far be it from me to try to stop you. And with 2 trillion targeting small businesses and consumers, the economy will bounce back just as soon as this virus in on the downwards trend.
The only problem will be if we try to come back sooner than is merited by conditions. This can just as easily start up again so the smartest thing we can do is just be patient and wait this thing out.

You conservatives don't makeup have the population and my feeling for you are no different than your feeling for me. As soon as you start sending me hugs and kisses I will return the same.

And you need to learn to differentiate between being facetious and hateful. Anyone who wants to sacrifice themselves because they think somehow it will benefit their children and grandchildren is lacking something in terms of IQ points. Now because of restrictions placed by management I can't run around calling people stupid even though their posts indicate that they are. For that reason, sarcasm and facetiousness are used as substitutes. Being factious doesn't mean I hate someone but that I think that their position is rediculous as would be sacrificing oneself in the illusion that it would somehow benefit your children and grandchildren. It wouldn't. Understand???
