This virus does not have a politcal agenda. It will infect anybody. No one is immune. The sugestion that it infects immigrats more than anyone else was pretty ignorant, and racist, like the virus is in sanctuary cities becsuse .....fill in the blank, that line of thinking reminds me of how the Black death was blamed on the Jews. People in situations that are crowded, like the homeless, in jail, ar school are at biggest risk because they have no choice. A little compassion would go a long way here.

For working but vulnerable folks at special risk, it takes at least 21 days to get an adjudication from unemployment. IF your employer will work with you And support your need to stop worjking. And you have doctors verification. Try getting an appointment with a doctor for a well visit to discuss insurance claims in the middle of a medical crisis....!
And then, you are not paid for an additional week while the check is processed for a favorable decision. So you have to be able to go a month without pay, then be able to proceed on a percentage of your previous pay, in order to take off and quarantine yourself, possibly longer if there is a backlog due to crisis or seasonal variations. In Tennessee, there were horrific tornadoes last month and those displaced workers are already jamming the system to capacity.
They're is no way a financially insecure worker would take that chance. To spend a month or two NOT WORKING and have the system then deny the claim!?! To keep from having "a cold." And prevent the theoretical spread to somebody else's grandma.....
My son refused to chance it. Went to work delivering food around downtown about two hours ago.
He isn't sick.
Yet.

Unavailable health care is crap, regardless of the quality. How can we know the quality of our health care? How do you differentiate between health care and administration?
Unavailable? Walk into any emergency room - voila - health care readily available.
Quality? Outcomes and LOS are the most common indicators, along with patient satisfaction.
Differentiate? Health care is the person taking care of you - doctor, nurse, technician. Administration is the follow up thru insurance, Medicare/Medicade/social workers, etc.

My son has one medication that costs over $5000 a month. Insurance covers it with a copay of $3.50.
In December, he went to pick up another medication at the pharmacy, it was expired. The mental health center was closed for about ten days due to holidays. We spent six hours in the emergency room to get a script for benztropine. Without it, his movement disorder is so severe he cannot dress himself. The ER doc suggested he look into the Ingrezza, the expensive new alternative. The nurse practitioner at the Mental Health Center agreed. He did not even see a neurologist. Just the nurse.
That is really crappy healthcare delivery. I'm glad it is working out ok at the moment. It is still irresponsibly crappy when some doc who saw you for five minutes, taking a minimal health history, makes sweeping recommendations changing your entire drug regimen without providing followup.

The emergency room is limited to crises interventions. They can give a diagnosis but not a prescription. We both know those costs. Admission is only for longer care services but the cost varies by insurance or the lack thereof. Same for the ER visit costs which are very high.

I answered this already, maybe I should type this post in red; of those 41 deaths, 26 were all over 80 years of age and living in one nursing home in Washington state where the virus got out of control before anyone even realized what it was. Subtract those 26 from 41 and then divide the remaining 15 by 1678 and you get 0.9%, about the average of the other countries. As the number of cases in the US has been increasing the death rate has remained about the same, 1%.

Pay attention: 86 minus the 26 80+ aged patients in one nursing home = 60/4657 = 1.3% - like I said.
So far this year 3.5 million cases. 55000 deaths. 1.6%
About the same percentage.

And Bingo - just what I said - we have an 'medical administration' problem - not a care problem.
The numbers are constantly changing. For example at the point in time you got your information, the number of cases in the US were 4040; they are now just about 5,000 and the number of people who died in the Washington State nursing home was 19; it is now26.
