In early 2009, the Swine flu outbreak in Mexico spread into the US (Go figure). Here is a brief look at that pandemic:

1. The flu strain responsible for the outbreak — influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 — originated in Mexico and was first detected in America in April 2009.

2. The strain represented a unique combination of influenza viruses never before seen in humans or animals.

3. The virus quickly spread globally, primarily affecting children and adults under 65 who lacked immunity to H1N1.

4. The WHO declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic on June 11, 2009.

5. Between April 12, 2009, and April 10, 2010, the CDC estimates swine flu caused 60.8 million illnesses (1/5th of the US population), 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S.

6. On Oct. 5, 2009, the U.S. began administering a newly approved H1N1 vaccine to select Americans - pregnant women, people who live with or care for babies under six months old, children six months to four years old and health-care workers. Vaccination coverage expanded nationwide by that December.

7. WHO declared an end to the pandemic on Aug. 10, 2010.

8. Globally, an estimated 151,700 to 575,400 people died from swine flu in the first year of the pandemic. It is estimated that 11–21% of the then global population (of about 6.8 billion), or around 700 million–1.4 billion people, contracted the illness.

Six months after the swine flu first appeared in the United States, on October 24, 2009, President Obama declared swine flu a national emergency.

The media (and politicians) treated the swine flu pandemic like it was a bad case of fleas. They issued warnings and instructions, but left out the fear mongering and the POLITICS.

Currently, CDC, WHO and Johns Hopkins CSSE are reporting just over 150,000 cases of Coronavirus infections world wide. 74,000 have fully recovered and there are currently around 5900 deaths.

No doubt COVID-19 is a serious matter, no doubt it will spread before it either runs its course or is stopped by an effective vaccine, but the spread of this thing has less to do with its virulence than with the political polarization that now exists.

There are many among us, some here on OPP, who actually hope this coronavirus will be so devastating that it will be the final nail in president Trump's coffin. The American left has once again found themselves a political weapon. They absolutely love victims as political pawns. In the long term, the Viral Hatred for one man is far more dangerous to our way of life than is a virus that can eventually be beaten.

Pull together? That's a sweet pipe dream. We are no longer dealing with Republican/Democrat party policy differences, we are dealing with the forces of an ideological movement that is diametrically opposed to the founding principles of our American nation. No bridge has ever been built nor will ever be built that can span that abyss.
Allow me to put some perspective on this. Maybe so... (show quote)

Can I say "Like" but I don't, in fact I hate it but it is so true, especially your last paragraph.

Our heath system does not suck. But, in places where there is a high homeless rate, like Washington and California, many illnesses go unreported. You may notice that states with sanctuary cities will have a few things in common; homelessness, higher unemployment, drug abuse, deaths from unknown pathogens, and disease that include a wide range of bacteria and virus.

To solve the problem, those cities need to stop using illegals, clinically insane, or other homeless people as propaganda machines for elections. If they are going to declare themselves as a sanctuary then they must find in their own budget safety nets that include housing, food, medical screening and treatment, and a method for obtaining meaningful employment. This is the only way forward for those cities. As it is, homeless people defecate on the streets, do not have facilities to bathe or wash clothing, and many do not wash even their hands. If they come in contact with a disease, they share it...not just with other homeless, but with well meaning people who give them money. Recall, the coronavirus can live for hours on stainless steel, imagine how long it can live on silver or paper money. That money, now contaminated, gives a dose of disease to storekeepers as the homeless infected buy their soda and beer, the shop keeper in turn shares it with customers as the contaminated money is given as change. Those people go home, sharing the disease with each individual they shake hands and reaching home, they share it with family and friends. Not everyone will get sick, some develop asymptomatic infection and becomes a Typhoid Mary.

Right now, those cities should be put under strict quarantine until the disease becomes manageable with pharmaceuticals or mutates into a form that average people can fight. In the meantime, gI've often thought the same thing.et the homeless into more sanitary conditions.

The House seem to use every bill to get their pet legislation passed. I think bills should never have "add ons" or unrelated request for funding.

I've often thought the same thing. When I was moderator of our town meeting, I had the authority, in fact the obligation, to rule amendments to motions "not germain" if they were not connected to the original motion. If I didn't, I could be challenged from the floor by any citizen.
However, the Vermont legislature does not seem to follow this rule. Like congress, they can add amendments that have nothing to do with a bill.

Only trump and those few who worry with him for their own wealth consider the C-virus a political issue..

Only trump tried to withhold information and reduce the severity by non-action..

Only trump demanded less damaging information rather than truth about the new, never before known virus affect on humans..

Only trump and his orange cult want to talk about problems from 11 years ago with a very different decease then the coronavirus we have to deal with now, on this day and at this time.. we see no sense in squabbling over the long past history of another problem..

If you need to think about that in order to feel better about your orange con, in the time frame of today, you fall short of the mark and the bar you failed to reach on OPP..

trump has already lost any fair election and it has nothing to do with the virus in question..

This is a trump accomplishment and the nearly only one..

How Sanctuary cities started does not matter, what does matter is they are a reality and those cities have to take total responsibility for those people they encourage to take up residence on their streets. Street "camping' encourage disease. You did not even attempt to respond to this fact.

Then you accuse me of me of not being displeased when republicans tack BS to bills. This means that you think the 'house" has always been and always will be be owned by democrats. This is pure hopeful thinking on your part....and if you read, or are able to understand what you read.....go back and read what I said "The House seem to use every bill to get their pet legislation passed. I think bills should never have "add on" or unrelated request for funding." Did I say a Democrat or Republican "House"? No....

So prove me wrong on either case I made....but, don't pretend intellectual superiority by babbling nonsense or adding into my comment to make it political.

The only thing he accomplished , even with full backing was the mountain of money in the tax act for himself and the very rich..

What compromise would you want? Pelosi tried adding money for baby murder to a bill to help fight a deadly virus. You seem to be a reasonable person (at times)...just kidding, surely, that is not what you're talking about?

Adding amendments to a must pass bill is my most despised tactic. done by both parties..

the current blowup, EI, the hyde amendment was from both sides trying to force language via the same tactic..

https://www.snopes.com/news/2020/03/13/coronavirus-bill-abortion/ I know you do not like snopes, but it was the first of many on the search page..

The hold-up appeared to have concerned the inclusion — or lack of inclusion — of what is known as Hyde Amendment language in a proposed plan to create a federal fund to reimburse private insurers for covering the cost of coronavirus laboratory testing. The Hyde Amendment, which is added each year as a rider to the U.S. Health and Human Services funding bill, prohibits the federal government from funding abortions except in rare cases.

The concern the White House officials raised does not appear to have been the literal inclusion of language about abortion in a coronavirus aid package, but, instead, stemmed from a fear over how Pelosi’s bill could have set, as described by National Review, “a precedent under which health claims for all procedures, including abortion, could be reimbursed with federal funds.” As described above, there have been competing accounts of the negotiations. One claim is that that Pelosi attempted to insert pro-abortion language into the bill or, possibly, omit the inclusion of Hyde Amendment statements. The other is that the White House wanted to insert language, likely Hyde Amendment-based, into the bill themselves.

Only a loser would give him a vote.

I don't think permafrost is gonna admit to voting for Biden.

Because he would then be admitting to being a total loser.

The same tire meme, Trump had both the House and the Senate and couldn't get done x, y or z. Trump DID NOT have the senate, he had 51 senators with R following their names that included 5 (Murkowsky, Collins, Flake, McCain and Alexander) who consistently opposed him and voted with the Democrats on important issues.

Think so, but whoever becomes the nominee has my vote and my efforts.. even a small amount of money, probably..

I was holding a post to reply, but lost the darn thing..

My restriction to home, insisted on by all three of my kids, even my little girl is easy.. I could stay here all the time, nearly do, watch the grass grow, the snow melt slow as that is going.. but my wife has a bit more need for conversation...

They think the minor problems I had last summer/fall make me a walking infection if I breath the air around civilization.. I was a bit surprised my daughter got uptight about it.. she usually could care less..

One last item... my wife in the last outing before shutdown with some of her sewing pals, were in a restaurant and the table next door was going on about how the virus was spreading over the phone lines.. and they sounded as if they meant it.. no chuckles of giggles.. she is still gabbing about that and more dumb stuff over the shutdown.. My sister aided apartment is now shut down to visitors and the state shutting down all schools as of wednesday..

I know this is a serious event and it may well last longer then we now think, but so much seems such a overreaction..

Stay well CD and have a good day..

Gee, I was a kid once and did this...loved it..
