Who was Eve in Hebrew?

The Hebrew name for Eve is Chava (חַוָּה), from the verb lichyot (לחיות) “to live”. There are many words which are connected including chai, (חַי) and chayim (חַיִּים), all of which communicate the idea of “life”. So, it makes perfect sense to call Adam’s woman Chava, because one day she will become the mother of “all the living” kol chai (כָּל־חָי).

Eve is also referred to by another name; isha (אִשָּׁה) (Gen. 2:23), meaning "woman" in Hebrew. This is generally considered to be the feminine form of the Hebrew word for "man", ish (אִיש), however the real root reveals something much deeper. The root comes from A.N.SH. (א.נ.ש), meaning fragileness and delicacy. Interestingly, the word "fire", esh (אֵשׁ) also resonates in the Biblical name for "woman". All these subtleties of language add depth of meaning to our understanding of Eve’s name, which can only come from reading the Bible in the Hebrew language. Eve is called the mother of all living because through her, humans have an opportunity to achieve everlasting life. Many uninformed people think that she was the first woman. Nonsense! Archeological records confirm that humans have been on earth hundreds of thousands of years. Whereas Eve can be traced back to approximately 6,000 years ago.

Eve or Havva (Chava) is a Hebrew word for “mother of living”. This can be clearly seen in Genesis 3:20 KJV, where Adam named his wife Eve. After they had eaten of the fruit and were being cast out of the garden, because she is to be the mother of all living. She is placed on the Biblical timeline next to Adam.

The use of science has brought us many technological and medical advancements. Yet, as a human activity, science is fallible and subject to human bias. It is interesting to note that there are reports in science which involve analyzing human DNA sequences and in two studies, the evidence points back to a first man and a first women from which all humans descended. In one case the DNA analyzed came from a place in human cells called the mitochondria. The mitochondria in every human comes from maternal inheritance. Thus one of the first women was called “mitochondrial eve” in the science literature.

Evolutionary biologist Dr. Suddendorf in his book, The Gap, finds there is a large gap between the abilities of apes and humans.

Although the scripture alone can be used to show that humans were uniquely created and did not evolve from animals, it is not surprising that there is evidence that supports the biblical account that humans are unique.

It's not often when Church and Science complement each other. This was achieved recently when a highly respected genetics expert confirmed the existence of Adam and Eve — the first man and woman God created — through an extensive DNA research.

Dr. Georgia Purdom, a molecular geneticist from Answers in Genesis, has just released a documentary entitled "The Genetics of Adam and Eve," explaining her findings about the couple's DNA, backing it up with solid scientific support.

"But the Bible's language is clear that Adam and Eve were real people. Their historical existence and fall into sin are foundational to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition, the science of genetics—including human and chimp comparisons, mitochondrial and Y chromosome DNA, and human genetic variation—confirms and is consistent with the fact that all humans have descended from an original couple specifically created by God as described in Genesis," it added.

In an interview with Christian News Network, Purdom stressed that the historical existence of Adam and Eve is very important in people's understanding of the Gospel.

"One of the most compelling genetic evidences for an original human couple created by God is mitochondrial DNA research done by creation geneticist, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson," she explained. "He clearly shows that the common human female ancestor of us all (biblical Eve) lived within the biblical timeframe of several thousand years ago."

"This female ancestor could not have lived 100,000 or more years ago as the evolutionists claim," she said. "In addition, genetics clearly shows that human and chimps do not share a common ancestor. There are many, many differences in their DNA that completely undermine the possibility of shared ancestry only a few million years ago."

Dr. Purdom highlighted the need for Christians to be aware of this scientific development so that they will be able to give a more substantial defense of the Bible, beginning with Genesis.

She said. "We need to show people that science supports and confirms the history presented in Genesis."
