I loved singing the chorus, very moving, joyous, but here are the lyrics to Hallelujah: do you agree? Perhaps not so beautiful

Well I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

But baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love…

And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

The tension and contrast between the appearance of broken or limited human reality vs. our clearest and highest aspirations for ourselves and our beloveds produces the evocative, emotive resonance that haunts the full throated vowel sounds of the word...

Victory or peace comes on the dawn of the realization that being broken or lonely is ok. Its why we have time. And each other. And how a dying breath can still exult ....

HALLELUJAH!

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much

I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch

I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you

And even though it all went wrong

I’ll stand before the lord of song

With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah...

It seems Cohen, the author ad lib'ed a bit and added verses from time to time.... Its not certain how many verses there actually might be.....

"A Hallelujah Christmas" lyrics
Cloverton Lyrics
"A Hallelujah Christmas"
(originally by Leonard Cohen)

I've heard about this baby boy
Who's come to earth to bring us joy
And I just want to sing this song to you
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
With every breath I'm singing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

A couple came to Bethlehem
Expecting child, they searched the inn
To find a place for You were coming soon
There was no room for them to stay
So in a manger filled with hay
God's only Son was born, oh Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The shepherds left their flocks by night
To see this baby wrapped in light
A host of angels led them all to You
It was just as the angels said
You'll find Him in a manger bed
Immanuel and Savior, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

A star shown bright up in the east
To Bethlehem, the Wise Men three
Came many miles and journeyed long for You
And to the place at which You were
Their frankincense and gold and myrrh
They gave to You and cried out Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I know You came to rescue me
This baby boy would grow to be
A man and one day die for me and you
My sins would drive the nails in You
That rugged cross was my cross, too
Still every breath You drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

One website I consulted claims Cohen once said there were more than 400 verses, but he never sang a partial verse, preferring to wait until he had worked out the lyrics for the entire verse.

I've always thought that one misses the point of art, when one demands that it be all tied up in a pretty frame or bow, at once complete, comforting and non-confrontational. It is often the discomfort at some niggling detail that teaches me the most needed lesson.

400 verses? Wow.

I don’t disagree about art. Art is subjective.

How is the baby doing?

Rose, I started out listening to this song on my iPad without using my earphones, I stopped it to go find them to finish the song. Then I listened to it again! With the earphones , the instruments, his voice, the words, all came together and took me to that place..........that only the love and faith in our Lord and Savior can take us!

I am in awe as usual. I really missed your insightful intelligence, rare or even absent here with their ideologies.

Merry Christmas! For you and Rose42.

I've been there, as a Christian. And continue presently, as an atheist, to regularly visit!

Music! Fellowship! Consciously, conscientiously, practicing a discipline of lovingkindness, of artful conversation or of passionate defense of young and innocent ones and their ideals.

And babies!

To awe is human.

I've always had a soft spot in my head for you.

It helps to try to see past the nut encrusted, bitter, outer shell, since the sweet gooey goodness is mostly held safely inside. I am speaking generically here, not personally.

Beautiful version! There’s nothing like using earphones! The sound bounces from one side of your brain to the other and then straight down into your soul!

Have you heard “Celtic Thunder’s” version? I have it on my playlist on my iPad and it’s one of my favorite versions. Of course........I love anything they sing!

Beautiful baby! There is nothing better than feeling a baby in your arms, their smell, the softness of their cheeks when you give them lots of 😘 LOL!!!!!!

And a very Merry Christmas to you!
