Jackie Gleason and me

Wynn Fisher made the musical arrangements for their weekly TV shows. Wynn lived near me and every week I delived the arrangements in the afternoon for rehearsal for that night.
The third week I delivered it Gleason came out of the office and wanted me to thank me for finally delivering the the arrangement on time. With that he gave me a hundred dollar bill.
From then on I stayed for a while and listened to the banter between Gleason and Art Coney.
Gleason belonged to a private golf course in Alpine N.J. when he found out that I caddied there he asked the pro to bring me to him.
I grabbed his bag and went to the first tee to meet one of his foresom. It was Buddy Hackett who was one of my favorite comedians.
They played for $100 a stroke and if Hackett got him laughing he could not hit the ball. But if he did not laugh Hackett could not win.
One day Hackett asked him if he could have me caddy for him and Gleason said O K. For those of you do know Hackett was cross eyed which made it difficult to be with.
Near the end of the game Gleason was ahead by $700 and before teeing off Hackett
He told me to watch carefully because he was going to hit the ball into the woods.
He and I walked into the woods and I found the ball. He told me to let Gleason wait. After a couple of minutes Gleason toldhim time was up and to play the ball and pay a penalty. We waited again and Gleason yelled again. This time he said that others were waiting.
Hackett sripped down to flowered boxer shorts and ran out yelling "LOOK OUT LOCUSTS and he ended up beating Gleason.

Three of the best. Buddy with his one liners. Art with his slapstick. And of course Gleason, the great one. Have to throw in Red Skelton. That's when TV was TV. Clean family viewing, of course in black and white. A chance to escape the day in the field and something to take your mind off the next day in the field hoing and pikin. Quit watching TV bout five years ago, only news and weather. Nothing but garbage.
