During WWII I read bopks about famous Pacific battles. Examples: Tara, Wake Island, Iwo Jima.
After the war my father was instrumental in healing relatioa between America and Japan. During the Tokyo Trials (the trial of 28 Jaanese war leaders) he was able to admit a several thousand page diary of the emperors personal secretary into evidence. A diary is very difficult to enter into evidence because it is often self-serving. He also wrote the draft of a Japanese Constitution. Also, Ike appointed him the chief civilian negotiator of the Korean Peace Accords. When he retired The Emperor of Japan and Queen Elizabeth conferred international peace awards to him.
I digress because this is about my own experiences. John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State iunder Ike.
My mother and I were flying from the USA to Japan. I went into the men's room and a man was shaving. He dropped his razor and I picked it up. We introduced ourselves and he was Secretary Foster.
He asked me my name and asked if my father was attorney William Logan Jr. When I sid yes he said that Ike had appointed him the chief civilian negotiator of the Korean Peace Accords and he was going to Tokyo to discuss it with my father and General Ridgeway.
I had read about the battle of Wake Island and we were landing there. It was nothing like described in the book when we landed. Mr. Dulles asked my mother if I could go swimming in a lagoon with him. The lagoon was surroundeded with soldiers with rifles and their backs faced the lagoon. This was the security force to protect Mr. Dulles.
It also was a fantastc experience for me a 15 year old teenager.

In the early 1960's, enroute to my next duty station, we flew into Wake all the way from the USA in a Super Connie, a C-123, never above 10,000 feet. It was a "forever "journey". Approaching Wake the Air Force crew told us to buckle up as we were preparing to land. Our approach was over water, of course, but we did not know the runway ran practically into the Pacific. Oh yes! It was challenging to be a few feet off the water and unable to see land. "Challenging" is a synonym for being scared sh_____s. It's hard to imagine the battle that was fought for Wake Island. The USMC performed a truly laudable feat on Wake and, although seriously outnumbered, inflicted ten to one casualties on the Japanese.
