I object to this. Since the liberals all seem to believe that all it takes to increase everyone's salary, why stop at $15. per hour? Let's demand $200. per hour.

Pfffft!!!! Why make anyone go to work at all...?

Just give everyone a universal basic income. Lol

I think if someone works 40 hours a week they should be able to have. A roof over their head and food on the table and basic health care!

Would that not depend on how many rug rats they are producing, how many drugs they are buying, how much alcohol they consume and what kind of car they drive also???

DH and I occasionally worked 2 or 3 jobs at a time...not because we HAD to, because we wanted to get ahead. At times I worked 12 days in a row, 2 days off, 12 days in a row. MANY people today don't want to work 5 days a week.

I once had a job where I went to doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals and did chart audits. It always amazed me to go to a clinic for indigent people and as I sat in the waiting room I saw families come in with young people and they ALL had smart phone, mom even gave hers to the toddlers to play with. The boys frequently had on the basketball shoes from their latest "heroes" and the girls followed suit.

My taxes helped pay for their healthcare so they could have all the latest gadgets and trinkets and mom could have 12 kids (in many instances NOT married)

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, but the legislation is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate.

The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009 — that’s the longest stretch of time without an increase since the minimum wage was established in the 1930s.

“That's not America. We need to make sure that people who work full-time are not in poverty,” said Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA).

Scott introduced the Rase the Wage Act, which would incrementally raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. After that, the federal minimum wage would be pegged to median wages.

The Raise the Wage Act would also eventually require employers to offer tipped workers the full minimum wage, and phase out the lower minimum wage for workers who receive tips.

Currently, 29 states and D.C. have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

“The people have already spoken on this,” said Scott.

Critics argue a $15 federal minimum wage would lead to job losses and would primarily hurt lower-wage workers the most.

“Good intentions are no excuse for imposing bad policy,” said Rachel Greszler with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. “The Raise the Wage Act is a misguided attempt to increase incomes. In reality, it will eliminate jobs and decrease incomes for workers with the fewest skills and least experience.”
Higher wages, job losses

A recent Congressional Budget Office report said raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would boost the wages of 17 million people, but could also cause a median 1.3 million employees to lose their jobs.

“Even if there's a little adverse effect on unemployment, the increase in the minimum wage will overwhelm that problem,” said Scott.

Several companies like Amazon, Target and Costco have raised their minimum wage or have called on Congress to raise federal federal minimum wage. Earlier this year, McDonald’s stopped lobbying against a federal minimum wage increase.

“Many people point out that McDonald's (MCD) may have to pay their workers a little more, but more people can buy hamburgers, and so they'll be all right. Many corporations have come out in favor, or at least they're not opposing the minimum wage because the minimum wage has been shown to stimulate the economy so much that the corporations will do well,” Scott said.
$15 is ‘not workable’

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has said the Raise the Wage Act would lead to millions of job losses and primarily hurt small businesses.

“The Chamber continues to believe that there is a path forward on a legislative package that includes a meaningful, but reasonable increase in the minimum wage. We stand ready to work with Congress on such legislation. However, $15 per hour is not a workable federal minimum wage,” Suzanne Clark, president of the chamber, wrote in a letter to Congress.

Opponents also insist raising the federal wage ignores cost-of-living differences around the country, and would hurt states with lower living costs.

“There's some that just don't want to pay people fair wages,” said Scott.

In order to address some of those concerns, moderate Democratic lawmakers introduced an amendment to the bill that would require the Government Accountability Office to to study the impact on job creation after the first two wage increases.

The Senate is unlikely to take up the Raise the Wage Act as it stands now. Scott told Yahoo Finance he thinks some Republican senators may pressure party leaders to at least negotiate.

“The people have already decided what they want, and if the Republicans in the Senate want to block the minimum wage and tell the people that they should continue working at a wage where they can't even rent a two-bedroom apartment if they worked full-time, let them say that,” he said.

“Maybe not $15, but we can talk,” Scott said. “But you first have to agree that you want an increase.”

So I guess the Democrats are okay with people who are on the lowest end of the totem pole at their jobs getting replaced by kiosks cuz that's exactly what's going to happen the people who are on the lower rung of the totem pole and restaurants and stuff like that they're the ones that are going to be fired you know the same people that the Democrats claim they want to help yeah you just can't make this stuff up! The house can vote all they want to but the Senate ain't going to take it up so it was just a a show vote cuz they know it's not going to pass in the Senate so we're just doing political theater just for the sake of political theater because they can't shake the narrative that Trump painted on them last week as they're all radical and that was a brilliant stroke I might ad! Because we had a congressman or Senator come on CNN and actually tell Jake Tapper last week that what Trump did by making Nancy Pelosi support the squad he all but pretty much pain the whole Democratic party is a bunch of left-wing nutjobs because he's making a stark difference from what he's going to be bringing to the table as opposed to what they're going to be bringing to the table he actually has policies that people would actually vote for whereas the Democratic party they have none except to kiss ass of the illegal immigrants that's all they got and soon they won't even have that because now that the Supreme Court has ruled with Trump that he can go ahead and start taking grant money from Sanctuary cities eventually they're going to have to support these raids and by the way and mentioning raids why did we start January 21st 2017 when Trump enters his first day of office! Can someone please tell me that

If corporations are for paying their employees more they don’t have to have the government make them. Go ahead and do it.

That said, raising minimum wage only drives up prices so your money buys less. I think a person should get paid what they’re worth and I’m sorry, “would you like fries with that” is not worth 15 an hour nor is it a career choice. It is a job for teenagers and they don’t need a “living wage” they need beer money. Fixing wage inequality is not something gov should be trying to fix. People need to make themselves valuable, training, school etc. I command a high salary cause I spent a lot of years bettering myself and I’m good at what I do.

There's always people at the bottom they have right to life!

My waitress gets tipped well especially if she does her job well. As stated in another post, whatever you do stand out, don’t stand in line. Employers are not in business to give anybody a job. They have families to take care of too and they are the ones with their neck on the line and their money invested. Make yourself valuable to your employer. If they won’t take care of you, there are employers out there that will. Especially in today’s economy.

Yes, and everything costs more because those who were making money for their employer are now forcing the employer to raise his prices to cover this government mandated economic disaster, if they can. If they can't then the unfortunate employee finds himself making nothing per hour as he is out of work. Prices and unemployment both rise. Good work, government!

The only thing wrong with this country is Greed any country that would give a tax break to people who make 60 billion dollars a year and let millions of its people live in poverty is disgusting.

Newsflash! Nobody, not even the most successful businessman in the world, makes $60 billion a year. It is a rare thing to see a multinational corporation do that, and they are not owned by any one person, but by millions of shareholders, who are paid a dividend on their investment.

Nice try, no cigar.

That's what the Republicans have always done keep your boot on the working man keep him down till you get a illegal to take his place!

Oh, but of course! That's why there's such a push to regain control over the southern border, because the Republican President is so gung-ho about bringing illegal aliens to take American workers' jobs from them at half wages. That's why burdensome regulations and taxes are being cut wherever possible, to keep the working man down and enrich the evil entrepreneurs.

Fact: Unemployment is breaking records, for the right reasons for a change, because it is so low. The people are going back to work in their millions and the economy is roaring back after 15 years of government led stagnation. Never before have so many people been employed all at the same time in the history of America. Taxes are lower than they have been in living memory, and people are taking ownership of their lives on a scale never before witnessed.

You need to open your eyes and see that it is the Democrat led House that is blocking attempts to limit illegal immigration. Now, just why do you think that might be?

And now, Tlaib is calling for $20 an hour because SHE “can’t have people living off tips” - who does she think she is!

The CBO has calculated that 3.7 million would lose their jobs at $15 an hour, apparently she doesn’t mind adding a few hundred thousand more.

And she’s getting mocked all over the place for her economic ignorance.

I think they should abolish the minimum wage. What's good in one state may not be enough in another. I say if someone is willing to work for $5. bucks an hour, let ' em. High minimum wage equals higher prices all around.

Instead of raising the minimum wage, the government should work on raising the value of the dollar.
