My Dad has a similar issue. He hears just fine with his hearing aids, but if there's background noise, or the speaker is going a little too fast, he can't catch it. I think it has more to do with the processing than with sensitivity in his ears. He's 84, so I guess it's just par for the course. They replaced both of his knees in the last few years, put stints in his carotid arteries, even gave him kemo for a lump in his chest. The guy's a regular walking cyborg...
