Proverbs is my favorite book of the OT...

All of them! But I still have my little pocket Bible from when I went in the Army and the pages are very tattered. I can't bring myself to get rid of it.
How 'bout that, tucker, when my great aunts heard that I was joining the Navy after HS graduation, they sent me a Bon Voyage gift--a leather bound pocket KJV Bible. It has been with me ever since.

I never got Proverbs. All of it was way too obvious. It seemed to me one had to be close to totally devoid of a moral compass to find them useful. Psalms on the other hand were challenging.

I like the way they contrast...

There is a rhythm to it that is very peaceful...

I often find that if I have a problem I can just flip through them and the solution becomes evident....

Mine got used a lot and it got me through some very trying times! There was nothing better to take with you no matter where you were. I'll wager that you probably have some great memories (and some not so great) every time you open it. They become an heirloom. When I die I'm taking mine with me.

That is the beauty of English because it is a rich literary language and there is a word for almost everything that can be thought or expressed. On the other hand, I wonder; if I knew Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, etc., would I feel the same way?

(Between you and me, and not to offend anyone, Muslims say the only way to understand the Koran is in Arabic. I believe there is some truth to that.)

Perhaps, runi, you found Proverbs to be too direct, too in your face, too plain spoken, too lacking in the challenge of a hidden message because it contains no hidden meaning.

Yet, Proverbs was compiled and recorded by Solomon, of whom it is recorded, God gave him the greatest wisdom of any man who ever lived.

David, the author and compiler of the Psalms, on the other hand, was beset by enemies surrounding him at every stage of his life, often running and hiding, to preserve his own head, and always deeply emotional and full of faith as he pleaded with God to deliver him from his godless enemies.. Is this the appeal?

I was wondering the same thing as I texted my last response...
I know my Arab friends claim that the Koran is far more beautiful in Arabic... And many of the Buddhist teachings are better expressed in Chinese...

I wonder how much is truly lost in translation?

Greek and Hebrew are both more wordy than English.

There is a version of the Bible called the Amplified Bible that has three or four different nouns, instead of just one to cover the full meaning of a Greek or Hebrew word which loses much in our Bible translations that translate word for word.

The Amplified Bible does this through the use of explanatory alternate readings and amplifications to assist the reader in understanding what Scripture really says. Multiple English word equivalents to each key Hebrew and Greek word clarify and amplify meanings that may otherwise have been concealed by the traditional translation method. The first edition was published in 1965.

The AMP is based on the American Standard Version of 1901, Rudolph Kittel’s Biblia Hebraica, the Greek text of Westcott and Hort, and the 23rd edition of the Nestle Greek New Testament as well as the best Hebrew and Greek lexicons available at the time. Cognate languages, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other Greek works were also consulted. The Septuagint and other versions were compared for interpretation of textual differences. In completing the Amplified Bible, translators made a determined effort to keep, as far as possible, the familiar wording of the earlier versions, and especially the feeling of the ancient Book.

It is possible to Download the Amplified Bible Free of charge.

You're welcome, Canuckus,

it's 4:00 A.M. here, the quietest part of the night. Keeping one eye on the internet and the other on radar, for incoming thunderstorms is sometimes more entertaining than trying to sleep.

This APP is most excellent... I have been playing with it for the past half hour... I like the bookmark function...

It is 4:30 in the afternoon here... Blue sky and hotter than it out to be (31 C )..

I am an early riser too... Though I usually read or watch the babe sleep at that time...

Have some private students coming in now...
Thanks again for the APP

That is a rather superficial assessment. They offer so much more than that. A cursory glance won’t yield much but the obvious.
