Someone ought to drown his dumb son of a bitch. He rode this poor horse into deep water with a tie down. The tiedown didn't allow the horse to raise its head out of the water. There are some acceptable reasons for a tie down, professional ropers use them, however, I don't know exactly why.

I heard it gives the horse leverage, whatever that means. It could just be to keep the horse's head out of the way when throwing the rope.

Often, however, when one sees a tiedown on a trail horse, it usually means poor training with improper bridling causing the horse to get into the habit of tossing its head. The tie down is used to inhibit the head tossing. Or, the nitwit thinks it looks cool. While it doesn't show the end results, I suspect the horse is too far gone to have survived.

The jackass also did what one should never do: ride into the water not knowing the depth. We have gone to the Missouri Ozarks many times and spent a week trail riding. There are numerous river crossings, the rule of thumb while crossing the rivers there, is never ride into deep green colored water.

Anyone stupid enough to have pulled that stunt is a waste of oxygen. The poor horse!

Not just the rider who drowned the horse but those standing on the side lines encouraging him! If there is a hell, it would be fitting that they assume the position of the horse, trusting the rider, then being betrayed by being ridden into the water, drowning and have it repeat over and over..... and knowing that it would happen until world without end!

Always release tie down, loosen the cinch and swim along side the horse. A good horse will cross the river and then wait on you. Tie downs are necessary for lots of reasons, but I won't try to explain here.

I'm not even going to watch it! I don't want to see a horse drown because of a dumbass.

Tie downs have purposes, but not going into water. The Animal needs freedom of movement in a situation like that. It will, most times take care of itself.

Archie, I wish I had not watched it. I had bad dreams and today I feel so wrung out! I am not opposed to tie downs, as you say they have a place. These Spanish (Mexican) speaking men were determined to drown this horse. That was their intent and they succeeded. While laughing at its struggles!! As I wrote earlier, I hope there is a hell and they get their reward!!

I'm glad I chose to not watch it. I've owned, and worked with horses most of my adult life, and they are, besides dogs, the most wonderful animals to have.
I still have one who was born here. He is rarely ridden, but well fed, and cared for.
He is our largest dog. He just ain't housebroken yet.

Give Mrs. Bunker time........she'll get it done!

So she claims.

I have full faith that there is nothing Mrs. B can not do!!

I have several of these wonderful people living in my barn. They are forgiving and loving. I often have them taken to the pool where they swim.... on their own, and they have a walk out platform (all sides) where they can get out whenever they want. No saddle only a lead rope so if they get into trouble their head can be managed. They are supervised during their swims.... one horse, came to us last year, if you ask her if she want to go swim..... gets all happy and is quick to get to the gate so she can "relax" in warm Epsom salted pool. They all have personalities, unique..... but they all have the same trait, they love!

Oh dear Lord, that was heartbreaking to watch.

I was riding horses before I was born--my mom rode until she was 8 months along, my dad and her doctor put a stop to it. I grew up as a cowboy, learned the art of the lasso, and how to fit out a horse for different types of riding--herding cows and branding calves, roping horses, hunting and just fun. I've ridden them slow and fast and when they came unhinged, been thrown more times than I can count. Our Mountain horse was a treasure, that guy was afraid of nothing and he would take you anywhere in any kind of terrain and weather, and that includes swimming across rivers and such. Mostly, I rode bareback like my Indian friends. I love those magnificent animals.

A tie-down is used in both training a fresh broke horse and in certain rodeo events. These cowboys explain the tiedown

Riding a horse into a river with a tie down secured is absolutely insane. I can only hope and pray the kilier of that horse gets his due.

I don't care to watch this again, once was enough. However, I didn't get the impression anyone was laughing once the horse was struggling. Prior to the tragedy, when the guy first entered the water, probably there is laughter.

It did appear that once the guy swam out and placed the rope around it, he didn't attempt to release the tie down. However, once pulled to the river bank, it seemed he was holding the horses head out of the water.

I think one would have to know if these people knew the depth of the water prior to entering, before concluding it was the intention to drown the poor horse. However, the number of those standing around indicated, and that it was being filmed, something was up.

It could just be that they didn't think about the tiedown being a problem. Here's another possibility: while one doesn't see any other horses in the film, or at least I didn't, these people could have been on a ride when coming to this water crossing, and that a rope was available indicates something.

The show off being filmed is gonna test the possibility of getting to the other side. Still, If I recall correctly, the riverbank on the other side didn't seem like a place where one could smoothly exit the water. There are many questions about this horrible tragedy, we'll probably never know.

I had disturbing flashbacks throughout the day. I know how you feel. I can think of only one incident that I witnessed as a child that comes close to what that poor horse went through. I'll spare you the details, for I don't wanna ruin another day for you.
