Happiness is fleeting. Joy is not. There is joy in being a Christian. I hope you can get with a bible study group or good pastor to learn more about the purpose of the bible, what it means, and what it means to be a Christian. As you said, you won't learn it here. lol

Rose, why did you focus in on "happiness." Happiness IS knowing God and Salvation. Are you unhappy? You are interpreting "happiness" within the narrow definition of contempory 21st-century Orwellian dystopian language. I am using happiness as used in the Declaration of Independence to mean living a good and beautiful life. Do you always have to get the last word in on every posting, especially if you disagree with something said in it? There was so much more I said.

We mustn't become small- nor closed-minded. If we do, we abandon what God (and Christ) want for us and what makes us human, which separates us from all other living things: Free will, coming to God (and Christ or whatever) on our own, acting well and living well for justices' sake and the sake of others, and to be the caretaker of all living things we have been blessed with in this world.

I believe (and this is only my opinion based on what I have learned) that there are many figurative ways to interpret the Bible. Even though it is the word of God, it was not written word-for-word by God and therefore is not literal. The Bible has many authors, is filled with wisdom from the ages, much of which can only be achieved through age and experience or by learning, studying, and living the Bible from a young age. It is a roadmap to how we should conduct our lives. There is always more than one route to get somewhere. Some routes take longer or are longer than others. Part of the joy is the journey through the guidebook to happiness. So many people are lost, confused, miserable and filled with ingratitude for living at the greatest time in history and in the freest society ever. The ingrates want to take that away from you. It isn't that "misery loves company." It's "misery loves company that is also miserable." Don't be or think miserable things. We could argue over the meaning of scripture from now until the end of time. One would be well-advised to understand what these differences are and why others do not see things the same way rather than to discount them. That's my two-cents worth for what it's worth.

God bless everyone.

Allow me to offer some perspective.

The atheist bible, Darwin's Origin of the Species, the Koran and the Book of Mormon are all the work of one man during his lifetime. The parallels between the creation of the Koran and the Book of Mormon are remarkable. Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith supposedly experienced revelations through an angel messenger. During their revelations, both men suffered physical, emotional and mental issues. Some to the point that their families and friends thought they had contracted diseases. Some even thought Mohammed had leprosy. Both men were polygamists and pedophiles. Smith was arrested 42 times for charges of bank fraud, perjury, fornication, polygamy, death threats to judges and conspiracy to murder the governor of Missouri. Mohammed was a murderer.

The Holy Bible, OTH, is composed of 66 books written by over 40 authors on three continents extending over a period of 1500 years. Most of the authors were princes and kings, high priests and prophets, not to mention the disciples and Apostles. Much of the histories, poetry, the sciences, the laws and the prophesies were divinely inspired.

The Bible stands apart from all other scripture in one critical aspect--the Resurrection. The victory of life over death. This was God's mission when He came in the flesh and suffered unimaginable punishment on our behalf.

When you look at the gospel narratives, they don't come out with just a resurrection idea. It is not just a sprig of an idea that Jesus rose from the dead. There are thousands of links from the creation through the stories of redemption, the Messianic prophesies in the OT to the crucifixion and to the resurrection. The drama of redemption is meticulously unfolded throughout the entire Bible. The Resurrection is not a stand alone story, it was coming together from the beginning.

Moreover, by far the Bible is the most widely distributed book in history. No other book, whether scripture or no, has exceeded the number of Bibles sold or distributed. No other scripture has been researched and studied to the depth and breadth that has the Bible. Even Guinness World Records that there is little doubt that the Bible is the world's best-selling and most widely distributed book. A survey by the Bible Society concluded that around 2.5 billion copies were printed between 1815 and 1975, but more recent estimates put the number at more than 5 billion.

By the end of 1995, combined global sales of Today's English Version (Good News) New Testament and Bible (copyright for which is held by the Bible Societies) exceeded 17.75 million copies, and the whole Bible had been translated into 349 languages; 2,123 languages have at least one book of the Bible in that language.

Mao's "little red book" is a distant second for number of books distributed, and most of these were forced upon the citizens.

Bottom line, tucker, no single man who ever walked on earth, not Mohammed, not Darwin, not Joseph Smith, has had the impact on humankind as has Lord Jesus.

(One more point. I have been an OPP member for 6 years and have rarely seen a thread that remained on the 1st page of the Main forum for as long as has this one.)

Inner Circle | Faith and Freedom Coalition, Dr. Ralph Reed

Fellow Conservative,

People of faith, including our Founding Fathers, have always understood that our rights come from God -- not from the government.

That is why the First Amendment guarantees that, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Yet, because of a little-known law called the Johnson Amendment, radical liberals have been able to silence the free speech of pastors and religious leaders across our nation for decades.

If you believe — like I do — that we must restore free speech for religious leaders, I urge you to sign the National Petition to Restore Free Speech right away.

The Johnson Amendment is a revision to the U.S. tax code — inserted by then-Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson — that prohibits political speech by churches.

This mandate has since been used by the IRS to harass, silence, and prosecute churches and ministries for six decades, violating the First Amendment right to political speech for millions of Americans.

Of course, the Left wants to ensure this amendment stays on the books so they can continue suppressing speech by pastors, churches, and ministries.

But the Faith & Freedom Coalition is actively engaging the Trump administration and Congress to repeal this amendment, which is one of the most blatant violations of religious liberties in our nation.

With your signature today, we can show Congress that there is overwhelming support to repeal the Johnson Amendment!

In the plainest terms: the Johnson Amendment is censorship.

It censors your church from speaking out on political issues.

It censors your pastor from discussing the relevant moral issues that are shaping our nation.

And it censors any political figures from getting involved in elections or explaining how politicians’ views align with your faith.

Given that we have an administration in the White House that supports religious liberties, now is the time to act if we’re going to repeal this amendment. But, we must do so before the next election.

The Left is hoping that conservative Christians will forget about the Johnson Amendment, and that they can continue using it to suppress free speech for decades to come.

They know that as long as they can intimidate pastors and faith leaders into silence, they can keep the sleeping giant of Christian conservatives asleep!

They know that the moment we wake up, their radical, anti-God, anti-family agenda is DOOMED!

That’s why we must fight back against the six-decade long partnership between the radical Left and the IRS to silence Christians!

It’s time we repeal the Johnson Amendment and restore free speech for pastors, churches, and ministries.

Matthew 22:21 Jesus said "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's." There is good reason for the Johnson amendment to be kept in the legal repertoire. The realm of politics is 'Caesar's'. The reason to retain this piece of legislation is that by getting into the political realm, the church with a unified voice, becomes the equivalent of a political party that can vastly sway an entire segment of the population on a variety of issues. There is nothing wrong with preaching for the souls of their parishioners with moral and religious values, but endorsing candidates and legislation comes dangerously close to violating the separation of church and state.
Quote:

There is nothing wrong with speaking out on moral issues from the pulpit. Where it becomes problematic is when that discussion turns to the legislative realm and attempts to place the moral values of that particular brand of religion onto the entire populace. When we do that, we become a theocracy, not a democracy.
Quote:
And it censors any political figures from getting involved in elections or explaining how politicians’ views align with your faith.

This is also problematic. There is nothing in the Johnson amendment that prevents political figures from getting involved in elections. As to explaining the equivalence of a politician's views vis-a-vis your religion, this is something that people need to be able to figure out on their own. For the pastor to point out that equivalence comes dangerously close to endorsement of a political candidate, which smacks of theocracy and the imposition of religious values on an entire electorate.

Here we see the real reason for the push to repeal the Johnson amendment ... that of raw political power. Christians as a whole do not all subscribe to the same religious mandates nor do they agree on what things should be legislated as moral imperatives. The Johnson amendment keeps that tendency towards moral dogma being instituted upon an entire population, whether they agree with it or not.

Again, this is a raw political power grab that violates the ability of each individual to make up their own minds on moral issues. The power of the pulpit is too great to allow it to infringe on the political process. We cannot allow the narrow views of one particular religion or sect to overwhelm the majority view on moral issues.
No less an authority than Founding Father Thomas Jefferson said the following:
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties."
Thomas Jefferson, January 1, 1802, letter by Thomas Jefferson, addressed to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut.

Each individual Christian Pastor should not lose his right to speak out in defense of God's laws of conduct, which He expects from any duly authorized government of men.

Each individual Union leader, or Civic Club official or any other organization has the right of free speech, and so, legally should our church leaders.

We do not, as Christians, lose our right to express our opinions, nor should our pastors.

Any legitimate Christian church body selects it's own pastor and other church leaders.

There is no "raw political power grab" taking place within the churches.

That's insulting, as if we lose our collective minds when we enter the doors of a church, or are collectively going to allow ourselves to be brainwashed.

It is our God given moral compass, and sense of values that corrupt politicians (as Lyndon Johnson was), and as today's Progressives/Liberals/Democrats, who have slid even farther toward the pit in their designs on this nation, all fear.

Any group or individual who understands the evil of their plan must be stifled, in their opinion.

Shrieking "separation of church and state," is, as always, an excuse to tape the mouths and repress the truth telling speech of every Christian, and to deny that we have the same right to freedom that all other peoples and groups with the United States enjoy.

It also seems as though he merely changed the names of the statues who were their pagan gods to Peter, Paul, and Mary as well as inventing "Christmas" and "Easter".
It seems he took the faith and transformed it into a religion.

The earliest Jewish Christians continued to follow Torah, the Gentiles did not have to follow Torah, except for "Love God and your neighbor," "do not commit fornication," and abstain from eating food offered to idols. Gentiles were not required to convert to Judaism to be Christians. Circumcision was not required for Gentile adult men.

(Colossians 2:11) "The circumcision made without hands." --This abrupt introduction of the idea of circumcision would be difficult to understand, were it not for the knowledge of the enforcement of Jewish observance so strangely mixed with this "philosophy" at Colossae.

Circumcision made without hands is circumcision by the Spirit, made to the heart: "But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God" (Romans 2:29).

Wherefore, my brothers, you also are made dead to the law [Torah] through the body of Christ; that you should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God (Romans 7:2-4). If Christians are equally obligated to the Torah and the grace received through faith in Christ, they are in a state of spiritual adultery, and no longer under God's grace!

According to Revelation 14:3-4, only 144,000 male virgins will be redeemed. Are you a virgin? What about women? Actually, 100 million people will live to witness the resurrection. Daniel 7:10. On Judgment Day, 3% of earth's inhabitants will survive the Judgment by fire. The wicked will be cut off. Isaiah 24:6. The current population of the earth is about 7 billion. 3% is 210 million. The last Judgment, called "the valley of Jehoshaphat", meaning "God judges", will affect the heathen who do not believe in the God of Israel. Joel 3:12. It is also called "the valley of decision". Joel 3:14. God started his cult/religion with one man who believed-Abraham-and it was counted unto him as righteousness. At the end, which is the death of the Messiah, salvation will again come down to belief. About half of those remaining will survive, about 100 million people. At the end, all of those who fight against the Messiah and Jerusalem will be cut off by fire. Zechariah 14:12. The Book of Life will be written and contain the names of those who love and fear the God of Israel. Exodus 20:6, Malachi 3:16.

You bring in some good points. My response is simply we did not need the Johnson Amendment for the first 150 years of the republic. What happened to change that?

"The reason to retain this piece of legislation is that by getting into the political realm, the church with a unified voice, becomes the equivalent of a political party that can vastly sway an entire segment of the population on a variety of issues."
Now I wish someone could explain why the Muslims and CARE can have public prayer in the streets, or have a prayer room built at universities that are publicly supported with tax dollars?

We have a "separation of church and state." The First Amendment guarantees Freedom of Religion, not freedom from religion! Atheists don't seem to comprehend this concept.
