I was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, and I went to Abraham Lincoln Public School # 9 - an Elementary School - from 1955 to 1963...

In those years, from age 5 to age 13, every student who attended was taught, "Reading, Writing, 'Rithmetic"... We were given Art Classes- how we could draw, paint, sculpture clay - and Music Classes - where we learned the music scales and learned holiday songs we would sing in an auditorium - and Science Classes - where we learned about our Solar System and what makes-up the Earth's surface and atmosphere...

When we were taught History, we were taught our history from 1492 till 1963... We learned the reasons for every war and conflict we fought... We learned all the Presidents...

When we were taught Geography, we were taught every State, the major rivers, the bordering countries, the State Capitals... Our books showed us pictures of each State, and showed a cow for dairy, a steer for beef, a hog for pork, corn on the cob and a cotton ball and a bushel of wheat for major agriculture products, and we learned if the State produced oil by seeing an oil derrick...

How much of what you have read up to now did you learn by 13?!?

How much is taught now that is truth? Common core math, reading about a prince marrying a prince, real history, a nation under God? Only to mention a few!

That is the current status quo. And Christian kids are attacked, or suspended, when they say those words, or pray to Christ. Or bring Christian materials in school, like the Holy Bible.

The Muslims, the Atheists, the LGBT's and other non-Christian religion complained about it. They said, it offends them.

In my opinion, all those who came and immigrated in the US, must assimilate and obey the rules. Not to impose their own wants. The DEMOCRATS defend these people, and remove Christianity from public square.

Now, Christians in schools are attacked, Christian speakers are not allowed to speak in colleges and universities.

Maxine Waters orders all those BLM, ANTIFA to attack the Christians, wherever they are, because they are mostly Republicans.

Labor Union teachers support removing Christianity, or punish the kids in schools who practice it.

At present, US Public schools rank # 35, reading/writing, and # 37 in math. The 3rd world countries perform better.

My brother and I often ask College graduates from our state to spell the state name.
In most cases the reply is MA. If we ask for the whole name spelled out, about 90% can't spell Massachusetts, the state they live in.

I'm a coupla years younger, but same here. And it didn't stop at 13. Algebra in 7th grade, Geometry in 8th, and pre-Calculus in 9th. And competitiveness was encouraged. It's how the teachers identified the kids who needed extra help. And if need be, a kid was held back a grade. But one thing I remember more than all of that, was how respected the teachers were (even the so-so ones). If there was even the slightest disturbance in the class room it was dealt with immediately. I remember getting swats from a PE Coach who had arms like a gorilla, and would you believe I never crossed the same line in the sand twice. I'm not saying that everything that's changed over the years is bad, but I do believe that what the left has done to our education system has been instrumental in our failure to be able to compete with the children of other 1st world countries today. Of course I'm just your average deplorable, so what do I know.

Your mentioning PE had me remember not only PE, but we had a school playground with swings and a slide for the students in 1st to 3rd grade, and where grades 4 to 8 could play softball and soccer in good weather... Yes, a playground in the middle of the city of Paterson, New Jersey where 140,000 people lived...

There are many factors why so many kids are non-performing. Not only the labor union public school teachers, and the democrat system.

The morals of society have gone down without control. Unwed mothers making many babies where kids are not properly supervised and trained. ; divorced parents leave children with lesser care; drug dealers target kids in schools. Priorities for kids are abandoned without proper guidance. Christian religion that teaches and guides the parents and children good morals now being attacked by the left.

So what is your point? Teachers today have to teach the test else they will face dismissal. The only thing that has changed is that we started treating our teachers like they were slackers and criminals instead of valued caretakers of our children. Teachers and their curriculum have remained much the same. It's our demand on them that has changed. If you want to know what is the problem with our educational system--then look no further than yourselves...

Every bit of it plus grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, the 8 parts of speech, even algebra and heaven forbid the "pledge of Allegiance," and that is certainly isn't all. Fortunately for whatever biological reason, I can remember most of it even at 84.

PeterS... "Teachers and their curriculum have remained much the same" is not even close to the reality of it...

There are videos over the last 10-20 years where High School Students thought the Moon was larger than the Sun... High School Students could not find Kentucky on a map of the USA... High School Students thought Texas was South of Mexico... High School Students could not name the sitting Vice-President, but could easily name TV Stars...

I have, personally witnessed a young lady, who was a cashier at a fast food restaurant, with the register broke and her calculator out of power, struggle with adding the prices of one small coffee, one small soft drink, one hamburger, and one cheese burger, to the point where the Manager had to help her... And if she was working as a cashier, I think it is fair for me to assume she was at least an 8th Grader or higher...

And even if you say these are selected Students, I know that in 1963, every Elementary Student 8th Grader - every one of us - knew the Sun was larger, where Kentucky was in the USA, that Texas was North of Mexico, knew the sitting Vice-President - it was Lyndon B Johnson under John F Kennedy, and at JFK's assassination, the Office of the Vice-President was left vacant until the 1964 General Election in case you were not aware - and yes, every one of us would be able to add 4 food items without a Manager's assistance...

So, I know today's Students are not being taught the same curriculum as between 1955 and 1963 Elementary Schools... And I believe that chances are today's Teachers were not taught the same curriculum either...

Your last statement is an important one, which gets overlooked in the grand scheme of things. The left has ruined run the education system for nearly 2 generations now. The DOE was born in 1980. Prior to it's inception, things were being controlled by the left, because no matter what you say about them - they are focused on the long game.

I see myself as "focused on the long game" in some ways... In 2016, I looked at the Supreme Court vacancy as the most important concern "in the long game"... Whoever won the Presidency would shape the rulings of the Supreme Court for decades... I didn't know how Conservative Donald Trump would be, but I knew how Liberal Hillary Clinton would be, and I voted for Donald Trump... I'm 69, but I am happy that I helped ensure a more Conservative Supreme Court long after I am gone...

PS - Trump has made me happy 10 fold - not merely on his Supreme Court choices...
