Democrats Have Freedom Butt-Backwards

Peter Buttigieg, the Mayor of South Bend, Ind. and latest entrant in the ever-more crowded field of candidates for the Democratic Presidential nomination (who’s next, the dog-catcher of Walla Walla, WA.?) gave a speech in Des Moines which was a classic example of the way the left has distorted the concept of freedom.

Explaining how conservatives don’t really understand what freedom means, Mayor Butt told the audience, “Freedom has been a Democratic bedrock ever since the New Deal.” Freedom to what – pick your pockets?

Expanding on his argument, the Mayor declared that conservatives “only see freedom from. But that’s not true. Your neighbor can make you unfree. Your cable company can make you unfree. There’s a lot more to your freedom than the size of your government.”

How exactly does your neighbor make you unfree? By owning guns? By using words the left classifies as “hate speech”? By refusing to venerate the fraud of death by carbon-emission.

FDR, whose New Deal the Mayor says is a bedrock of his party, identified Four Freedoms in his famous speech – freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom of speech and freedom of worship.

Only the last two are authentic rights – and it’s those the left has targeted for extinction.

Freedom of religion? Not for faiths that don’t condone abortion and unnatural marriage. Freedom speech? Not for conservatives. What about the aforesaid hate crime laws, campus speech codes etc.? Academia, where the left reigns supreme, is the least free place in America for expressing unpopular views.

Freedom from want. I want a Lexus. I want a vacation home in St. Thomas. But at whose expense?

Freedom from fear? Democrats fear gun ownership, MAGA hats and words they find offensive. What’s the solution – repeal the First and Second Amendments?

Conservatives have it right. Freedom is freedom from government, the only entity that can make you unfree.

Democrats support your “right” to health care and a guaranteed wage – which can only be provided at taxpayer-expense.

Conservatives support your right to the property you’ve earned, to the means of self-defense, to express yourself freely, to believe in the Bible, even when it’s politically incorrect. The right supports America’s right to secure borders. The left supports the equivalent of a horde of home invaders.

Democrats support your 15-year daughter’s right to an abortion without your knowledge or consent (a violation of parental rights), the right of a mooch to your income, the right of a snowflake not to be offended and so on.

The Democrats’ definition of freedom is a danger to the rights concept, which undergirds a free society.

Don Feder gets it right again. The left, (which the Democrat/socialist Party is a full fledged member,) hate the Constitution, because it limits THEIR power. Big, centralized government power is the bedrock of the left, and the more power the government has, (takes,) the less individual citizens have. And the left firmly believes that the end justifies the means. So lying, cheating, misinforming, twisting language, ANYTHING is acceptable, as long as it helps THEM gain and wield the power they crave. Freedom is the antithesis of the left's agenda

Don Feder gets this one right at least for democrat leadership. I don't think all democrats buy into this. A lot of them vote for the least objectionable candidate.

Under Socialism/Communism freedom is free from making decisions; free from deciding where to work, free from finding a place to live, free from making choices at the grocery store because there is only one choice, free from having to decide what to study, and so on.

As it should be. Imagine if you were required by some government agency to list the extent of your freedoms, and whatever is not on the list is not yours to claim as a freedom. So you start making your list, and after some time you're up to, oh, a hundred or so specific freedoms. You hand it to your government controller and he puts it in your 'file', pursuant to approvals, of course. Six months later you receive a short letter in the mail advising you of which 'freedoms' you have had approved from your list. Are you actually 'free'?

Now, imagine you institute a government, reserving everything not specifically listed as a power of government to yourself. How long would that list need to be in order to institute an effective government for the purposes you desire it to undertake? A couple of pages, perhaps?

'Freedom from' is far easier to define that 'freedom to'. 'Freedom from' is a list of prohibitions against encroaching on that freedom. 'Freedom to' is a list of approved activities not defaulted to the category of 'denied'. In the former, freedom is positive by default, in the latter it is negative by default. Which would you prefer?

Great post!!! The Founders set up the Republic so the Federal Government is purposely cumbersome , multi-layered, and unobtrusive in the day to day lives of the citizens. They wanted the citizens to be free of oppressive overbearing Government....not slaves to the Government as they are assigned the day to day responsibilities of living as deemed necessary by people such as Mayor Butt. If they desire the panhandler life style move to San Francisco, Seattle, NYC, or any other 'bastion' of all that is 'free' of charge (except for those who pay for the 'free' services ). If not leave me alone....the time may come where the Left Wing Marxist Government may come to fruition....when the law fails ( ie the Constitution is shredded even more than it has been already ) and elections become futile.....at that point Government will fail 'the people'.. when Government fails the people ....vigilantism will be prevalent because many Americans crave freedom and would rather fight and die as free men than live as slaves...that is how it was in this country about 250 years ago and 10's of millions of Citizens still hold that spirit today !!! Patrick Henry with 'Give me Liberty or give me Death !!! ' did not coin a jingle when he said those words he forged a way of living for a Country ....THE FREEST COUNTRY THAT EVER EXISTED IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ..... THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!

Welcome to you AHO-C. Sadly since our education system has been run by leftists for over 50 years, civics and American government history is purposely not taught. We have generations of ignorant citizens, who think socialism, (slavery to the government,) is really a pretty good idea. What makes America exceptional, has been we were the exception to the way most people were governed. It is appalling that ANY American would ever consider giving up the freedom and liberty they have enjoyed for over 200 years. Perhaps being conditioned to accept and comply, instead of being educated to develop critical thinking skills, has finally produced the mind-numbed citizen the left craves

It has been attacked many times before and still we stand, the greatest Nation there is...Freedom Sacred, and will never be forgotten or forsaken in our country.

Lets hope so. I see more and more people willing to give up different freedoms for different reasons be it free speech, the right to bear arms and ever increasing surveillance and monitoring. All for seemingly reasonable reasons like politeness and safety.
