US detention centers that hold migrant parents and children have been nearly empty for months, despite Donald Trump’s administration repeatedly warning that the US-Mexico border is at a “breaking point” because of the surge in Central American families fleeing poverty and violence.
There were nearly 2,000 empty beds in two detention centers last week, with a facility in Dilley, Texas, at 26% capacity and a facility in Berks county, Pennsylvania, at 19% capacity. On 1 April, the third family shelter was temporarily changed into a facility for adult women only.
This, combined with reports of aid agencies at the border overwhelmed by the food, shelter and medicine needs of migrants, has advocates warning that the government could be manufacturing a crisis to justify its hardline immigration policies.
“I think that the people making policy decisions don’t want [the system] to work … they want to create chaos,” said Michelle Brané, director of the migrant rights and justice program at the Women’s Refugee Commission.

Yes.... there are empty beds in almost every center. So, one has to dig into this to find the reasons. I found part of the answer at
https://www.kaaltv.com/national/administration-cuts-space-for-detaining-migrant-families/5323189/?cat=10159 "numbers of parents and children crossing the U.S.-Mexico border have surged, leading immigration officials to declare the situation a crisis. More than 50,000 parents and children were apprehended by the Border Patrol in March, setting a monthly record.
The number of border crossings in one day sometimes exceeds ICE's total family detention space.
More than 4,800 people crossed the border in a single day this week. Almost 1,000 were traveling in three large groups, the largest of which was 375 people, Kevin McAleenan, the acting secretary of homeland security, said Wednesday.
The Border Patrol has stopped referring many families to ICE and instead releases them directly to nonprofit groups or drops them off at bus stations.
In a statement, ICE said the surge left it "overwhelmed" and unable to transport families from the border to the Karnes and Dilley facilities, even if both detention centers had available beds. As of Wednesday, 427 women were in custody at Karnes.
"As such, ICE has determined that, at this time, Karnes will better meet operational needs by also serving partially as an adult detention facility," the agency said."
Every once in a while I would expect for you to look at information from both sides. Besides the borders being over run, there is yet another problem.....mumps. Nearly 200 people have contracted mumps at detention facilities across Texas since October, according to a state health agency.
The Texas Department of State Health Services says 186 people, including immigrants and detention facility employees, had confirmed cases of mumps.
And there is more.... measles, chicken pox, whooping cough and a host of other diseases to include STD (yes, they actively try to make anchor babies while in the centers) have been brought in and spread. Knowing that the staff at these centers would be blamed for the spread, sections of facilities are shut down and decontaminated before "visitors" are permitted to stay. This is costly, as all bedding and furniture has to be individually treated.
Now consider cost.....According to federal government data, it costs on average $149.58 taxpayer dollars to detain one person for one day in a immigrant compound, some states it cost even more. Now take the figures I gave earlier.... how much is it costing each of us to provide care for these people a day? The budget given is simply not enough...... $184 million, provided in the budget is gone..... and there will be no more funds allocated for the pampering of illegals until our next budget is prepared and signed. Think about it... how many US citizens are living on the streets (homeless), how many US children go to bed hungry, and how many elderly US citizens make the choice between heating their homes or eating????? How far would these millions go to sheltering, feeding, and clothing our own???
