The growth of unions in the 1930s and 40s brought about government policies that brought working people into the middle class. The rich and corporations fought the growth of unions by demonizing people who had helped the growth of unions (communists and socialists) and by getting laws that weakened the power of unions (e.g. Taft Hartly Act of 1947).
The second post (interesting to me because I did not know what was in Taft Hartly) went into detail about how the Taft Hartly Act weakened unions. It's worth a read.
