Not welfare things like grants to police and fire departments, road funding and money for airports are based on population. Undocumented residents can not receive welfare or vote.

The census is supposed to count all people wether they are citizens or not. There is concern that a citizenship question will cause non citizens to refuse to answer the census thus depriving some districts of representation and also reducing federal programs determined by population. It is a double edge sword. A repressed count would starve communities with large undocumented populations of federal resources which appeals to many conservatives. But a number of red states have these populations and it could cost them a house seat. What all Americans should want is as accurate a count as possible as our founders intended.

Why would illegals effect representation in a district? I can see things like gov dollars for medical facilities which will not turn away someone, but gov representation should not include consideration of illegals presence.

Bogus argument! If they are non citizens, they should not be counted anyway to qualify for services to which they are not entitled!! YOU support them, Kev, I’m doing well to support my own family!!!

Since none citizens are not supposed to vote, although we know they do, they should not count in determining Congressional representation.

Using that logic children should not be counted.

Citizen children require schools and benefits of citizenship.

Since when should illegals count toward 'representation' in our governing process and in no way should they be eligible for any tax payer funded benefit EXCEPT a trip back home.

I worked for the U S Census for 20 years. I did a survey for the CDC. We asked if the respondent was a citizen or not. Also the ACS also asked the same question. This ACS is asked of one out of five Americans every ten years. Since the samples are so big, one can expand the data to get a very accurate number of U S citizens. I also did the decentenal ce sus twice. The citizenship census question is a waste of time, unless you want to break Federal law and use the census for political pourposes . The citizenship question will also cost a fortune because rather than send in a census form, and have it electronically scanned or done on the internet. You will be sending out a person to knock on doors and interview households in person, or if they refuse, get the onfo from their neighbors. This will cost mote than the data is worth

So....we have to count illegals so districts are properly represented but the illegals can't vote nor are they entitled to federal programs.

Your post didn't make sense.

I worked for the Census bureau on the A C S survey and a CDC survey. You are asked on both if you are a citizen. One out of every 7 people are given the ACS every 10 years. Statistally, this is a big sample, and it can easily be expanded to get a very accurate number of citizenship. So we already have the data
The only reason for this question is if someone wants to use census data for political reasons. This is against the law, identification of someones responses is against the law

A citizenship question would be very expensive. There is something called non response follow-up. That means you have to send a trained census taker to every household and knock on their door and try to get the question answers. If they say no, they send someone else out. Then if no response or refusal you try to get the info from the neighbors. If there is a big non response. This get really expensive with not much gained, because you already have the ACS data. Better just leave the citizenship wuestion off
