Until the advent of jets for travel, O'Hare was strictly a military airport. BTW was your maverick yellow or orange? FUNNY story about that base (think it was that one) A friend and I were riding our horses along I55 to her friend's house to go swimming, so we were just wearing shorts and bikini tops. A very long caravan of jeeps and open troop carriers were going toward the city, I assume to the airport, driving quite slow, probably 20 MPH. The boys started hooting and hollering at us so we waved, and the next thing we knew some of them were jumping out and running up the hill. Dunno what happened after that cuz we put the heels to our horses
Yeah. The air looks a lot cleaner now. Dunno if it... (show quote)

Good story. Boys are always going to be boys and girls are always be girls, making the boys give chase. Mike

Well darlin, I've just backed way up. You are in the middle of (excuse me guys) Indian country. I now understand exactly where you were coming from. Here in Virginia we are crawling in that direction because of Northern Virginia where the residents mostly work for DC, which is a snake pit.

From your diction I think you live outside the city and are affected more about what's around you than the effects of the city and state. Unfortunately if that's the case you can't escape the horrendous taxes.

My cousin lived there years ago and left for Washington State because of the high prices for goods and taxes and that was 30/40 years ago. Mike

Yup. That about sums it up. And our new governor intends to raise the state income tax rate to 5% or more, add 30-80 cents a gallon tax on gas and make license plate renewal $500 per year. I'm south and west of the city, we still have sheep and cows and horses in the close area (quarter mile or so), and farms. Lots of open land, but I'm 25 minutes from the city limits. South of the city is not as built up as west and north, but people are pushing for it. Ugh...your cousin was smart

I feel for you because you can't just get a moving van and go. Heck, you've got roots but I'll bet in ten years they'll move you out to put up either $500,00.00 homes or more likely apartments. I live in what was once a rural area and we are surrounded by new homes. Heck I built half of them in the 80's. There was a section we couldn't build on because it had been a pig farm for over 150 years. Well it is now the proud area of $750,00.00 homes, right behind our $190,000.00 + homes. I paid $40,000.00 for mine in 1982 and now pay taxes on $190,000.00. I feel lucky. I don't have a mortgage, no credit card debt, we own both cars... Let me go astray, I was going to say we own our home, we don't and never will, I said we own our cars, we don't. The day I took a $72,000.00 check to the bank to pay off our debt on our house, I went to the city and wanted the deed to the property. Unknown to me deeds aren't a thing anymore because of taxes the city actually owns the property. As long as you keep up with the taxes, the storm water FEES, you vehicle stickers and others, you may live in your abode, you may drive your car and once a week they will pick up your trash if you place your container just so.

I really feel for you because even though we both have to pay taxes, you have to pay way more than I do and probably don't get some services that I do, which isn't much, trash pickup.

I'm building a hunting cabin out in the boondocks where 40 other families have done somewhat similar. I'm doing it now while I'm healthy enough to do so but also my wife doesn't get around well and it's 2 hrs. from home and I want her close when I'm hunting just in case she should fall or what ever. It'll also be somewhere to go to if SHTF. I have weapons, ammo, food and water, backup electric, BUT, I can't defend us at home alone so unless we can't go, We're gone.

debeda, I wish you and yours all the luck in the World. I'll pray for yours and I'm going to ask a favor. My sister texted me tonight, her Grandson was taken to the hospital with pulmonary problems and apparently it's serious. She asked me for prayers, you don't have to but a prayer for Preston would go a long way to help him, can't hurt. Thanks for letting me ramble and thanks for a prayer. Mike

Omigosh poor Preston. Of course ill pray for him, and pass the word.
Yes, I do have roots here, but my sister and brother in law just bought 35 acres somewhere in BF Colorado. I tried to talk him into somewhere warmer, but whatcha gonna do. Anyhow, he, his twin and my brother are gonna go there this summer to build some stuff, including cistern etc, and it's meant to be a self sufficient go place for all. Tho there's a lot of us so I would prefer a longer growing season.
I'm also sorry to hear your wife isn't doing well, will also remember her in my prayers. Take care, Mike

Something you said really resonated with me...
One does not own one's home...

Here in China I have bought an apartment... I paid a one time property tax on it... It Now belongs to me (there is a seventy Year limit on ownership)...
I cannot give it to my children (Although they would retain ownership in the Sad case of my death), but I can sell it to my daughter (or anyone I want really) for a dollar... And she would pay a one time property tax for it as well...

Chinese are amazed at the fact that our governments can take our homes (bought and paid for) if we don't pay taxes every year...

Just an interesting tidbit....

BB, are you actually suggesting there is at least one "fine, upstandin' real Navy man "

Surely you jest.
