Well, as I wrote earlier, they seem to love you back, Tom.

That's because you only see in black and white and not dark blue, red and white. Sharpest uniform in the world. Mike

My Dad looked pretty sharp in his. The Navy is a close second. How's that? But still second.

My dad looked damn good in his for 30 years. My Mom looked good in her Lt. Wave uniform, until as she blamed me, I came along. All my fault, right? Mike

My new avatar was taken a couple of days ago...in early Winter of 1968...just before I headed overseas. It is the only one of me in Dress Blues that I could put my hands on. I was eighteen.

Have seen more recent and I'd recognize you from that pic. Mike

Yes, the state itself is great, people downstate are salt of the earth. Did you hit starved rock or the mounds? BUT Chicago is straight up a pit.

Never went too far south though my commanding officer was from Carbondale. I went back and forth to Chicago frequently. I had a 70 Maverick and I was an enterpriser. I would drive Airmen up from Chanute to O Hare for $35 a head then I would look for uniforms and take guys back for $35. Traffic 8 lanes each way going 75mph bumper to bumper with everybody braking at the same time. Walking around downtown I saw smog alert stations every few blocks and the overhead trains were 35 feet above me but I could not see them through the brownish yellow smog that was the sky.

I turned 18 on 7/5/1968 in the Panama Canal Zone in a cat house on the way to Viet Nam. You look about the same age headed to the same area. Hooray for all who made it home. God bless those lost to foolishness and greed and their families. What a fucking waste of our youth for politicians perks and advancements. Fuck LBJ. Nixon tried but was inept and listened to McNamara. What a waste of young men. FUBAR! Mike

AGREED!! I have also never believed the statistics on the number of our men lost. I went to a little bitty high school in a little bitty town ( actually the high school served 5 towns and it was still little) I know many boys who went and 8 who were killed. That's 8% of the male members of our graduating class.

I went all through high school watching my classmates get drafted. I was told That I was not better than them so I enlisted. President Nixon signed the Moratorium Dec 8th 1972. I won't ever forget that date. It is good to be alive. God Bless you Teabag09

Yeah. The air looks a lot cleaner now. Dunno if it's any healthier, tho. O'Hare is way on the outskirts of Chicago ( would probably be Bensenville but Chicago annexed it to make the $$) there was also midway airport, which is still in existence, but at the time they needed longer runways for jets. Until the advent of jets for travel, O'Hare was strictly a military airport. BTW was your maverick yellow or orange? FUNNY story about that base (think it was that one) A friend and I were riding our horses along I55 to her friend's house to go swimming, so we were just wearing shorts and bikini tops. A very long caravan of jeeps and open troop carriers were going toward the city, I assume to the airport, driving quite slow, probably 20 MPH. The boys started hooting and hollering at us so we waved, and the next thing we knew some of them were jumping out and running up the hill. Dunno what happened after that cuz we put the heels to our horses

Well darlin, I've just backed way up. You are in the middle of (excuse me guys) Indian country. I now understand exactly where you were coming from. Here in Virginia we are crawling in that direction because of Northern Virginia where the residents mostly work for DC, which is a snake pit.

From your diction I think you live outside the city and are affected more about what's around you than the effects of the city and state. Unfortunately if that's the case you can't escape the horrendous taxes.

My cousin lived there years ago and left for Washington State because of the high prices for goods and taxes and that was 30/40 years ago. Mike
