The San Francisco Chronicle writes:

A student senator at UC Berkeley abstained from a vote supporting transgender rights last week, then took a moment to explain her thinking. Now, more than 1,000 people have signed a petition demanding that she resign from student government or face a recall.

Hundreds packed a Senate meeting Wednesday night to insist that she go. On social media, students labeled her a “horrible person” and a “mental imbecile.” Her campus political party severed ties with her. And the Daily Californian, UC Berkeley’s storied student newspaper, ran an editorial critical of her statements and refused to publish her written defense.

The uproar began Oct. 31, when the Queer Alliance Resource Center asked the student Senate to pass a bill condemning the Trump administration for considering a legal definition of gender that would require it to match a person’s sex at birth…

Reading a five-paragraph statement explaining her decision, Chow told her 18 fellow senators, who all voted for the bill (another was absent), that discrimination “is never, ever OK.”

“That said,” Chow continued, voting for the bill would compromise her values and force her to promote groups and identities she disagrees with.

“As a Christian, I personally do believe that certain acts and lifestyles conflict with what is good, right and true,” she said. “I believe that God created male and female at the beginning of time, and designed sex for marriage between one man and one woman…”

Student Senator Chow was never given the opportunity to defend herself.

The campus newspaper would not publish her op-ed defending her position and her beliefs.

Leftists are engaging in a campaign to “de-platform” Chow so they can have free rein to smear her and rile up their “mob” protesters.

In an interview with a local TV news station, one protestor even said Chow’s beliefs are “not valid.”

The school administration – which at one time professed to support the First Amendment – has not taken any action to condemn protesters threatening Chow for her religious beliefs.

UC Berkeley recently updated their “Free Speech” policy with the stated claim to protect First Amendment rights of all students and faculty.

Yet once again, the radical left is getting their way in censoring anyone that disagrees with them.

Do you think Isabella Chow should be forced to resign from the UC Berkeley Student Government for her Christian beliefs?

To me, it depends who voted her into the Student Senate.
She is there to REPRESENT HER CONSTITUENTS, not to run things her way, based on her beliefs, religious or otherwise.
If she ran on a conservative platform and was voted in by conservatives with the same beliefs as her, then she STILL should set aside HER beliefs on any subject and be a voice for her constituents...that's what they voted her in to do; represent THEM, not rule them with HER beliefs.
If she ran on a liberal platform and was voted in by a majority of liberals that want this bill, then yes, she should resign for the same reason.
It's not about the issue, it's about the rules.

More examples of inclusiveness in the liberal party. The students are being trained to be the vanguard of the communist, socialist party of America. I think all systems of higher learning should be purged of Anyone with an agenda in teaching. Our students are being brainwashed in large numbers.

Who in the hell was she trying to rule with her beliefs? Maybe it should have been written slower so you could understand what is written.

I agree. First she stated that discrimination was wrong then went on to say that her beliefs however allow her to discriminate.

Hey, I'm just being bipartisan here. For example - up until his last election, I voted for John McCain, as a majority of Republicans, with conservative values also did. The majority of Arizona citizens voted for President Trump. The majority of AZ citizens were against Obamacare and wanted it appealed. But McCain instead voted in the Senate AGAINST repeal because of a personal grudge.
All I'm saying is...if your religious beliefs prevent you from exercising a duty you chose to uphold, you don't belong in public office UNLESS THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED YOU IN AGREE WITH IT.
If college conservatives voted her in to represent their beliefs, the fascist students need to shut the hell up and let her do her job. If the fascist students voted her in, then she needs to step down and work at building a strong conservative base to become the majority.

She was not trying to influence anyone. She just did not go along with the crowd because she w was in jstep with her beliefs. This angered the libs because they could not control her. Typical leftist reaction. They don’t want anyone’s free thought. They believe everyone should be in lockstep to the left.

It has been that way for quite a number of years now. Ultra liberal left wing nut cases go there.

That's the exact philosophy which is destroying America. If I am required to compromise my faith, values and morality to serve public office then what we get to represent us is a slug with no defined sense of faith, morality, values and character. By the way, these people are currently called Progressives. The founders were quite specific in their agreement that the form of government they were establishing would ONLY WORK for a moral and religious people. Do you now understand why we're failing? Moral and religious people are becoming embarrassed to say " This is America and She is good."

No, she shouldn't resign. Who is surprised at the behavior of the deranged radical left wing clowns at Berkeley. They are intolerant with anybody that disagrees with them.

Yes. She is a member of the student government and her religious beliefs have no place in influencing her decisions affecting fellow students. Although she says discrimination is never OK, she is in fact saying that she can use her religion to justify it.
