Politicians have been making this claim for at least half a century; entitlements are bankrupting the Nation, causing deficits and raising the National debt. Some of these politicians include Social Security and Medicare in their list of entitlements, even though these are contributory programs.
Here what doesn't make sense to me, but may to you: These same politicians expect to receive their full salaries for life after as little as 6 years in public service, and don't contribute a dime towards it. These same politicians spend more time on recess than they do actually working, yet expect their full pay and benefits.
To me, a entitlement is anything that an individual or group receives at someone else's expense, anything not earned. When one looks at Federal expenditures ( an actual chart, not rhetoric ), Federal retirement vies with Defense for the top expense. When one deducts payroll withholdings premium payments, retiring of Treasury notes owed to the trust funds, SS and Medicare expenditures drop to near zero.
Which of the above is the REAL entitlement?
I think your on to something that's why we need term limits and let them get social security like the rest of us .

All laws that the congress passes should also include them as well. "Obama Care"
It has been said over and over again "The best way to fix Social Security is to put Congress on the plan".

All the more reason to admire Trump for taking no salary.

Congress has become a useless cesspool of corruption. The government is riddled from department to department with a self serving cancer. They exist ,only to feed their selves and their special interests.
It's becoming a frakin joke.
Personally, I have advocated for no more than two terms as a limit and when you’re out of office you get no further recompense. No retirement plan from your elected office, no nothing. You go back to the private sector and move on

Although I don't often agree with you, I have to agree that the above is a situation that needs attention.
1. Congressional representation was never meant to be a "career".
2. Congressional representatives should never be allowed to vote the own pay raises.
3. Congressional representatives should be required to abide by all the laws they pass for everyone else.
4. Congressional representatives should be required to have an extensive knowledge of and be required to abide by the U.S. Constitution.
5. Congressional representatives should not be allowed to accept money from lobbyists.
The average senator has to pull in more than $14,000 dollars every single day, just to stay in office. One of the easiest ways to raise that kind of cash is to turn to lobbyists, who make big donations and organize swanky fundraisers for elected officials in order to buy influence for their clients.
“You can’t take a congressman to lunch for $25 and buy him a steak. But you can take him to a fundraising lunch and not only buy him that steak, but give him $25,000 extra and call it a fundraiser.” – Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff

Where else in the Universe could you put in such a piddlin' amount of time--yet receive full pay for the rest of your life? This is a major scam on the rest of the population. It is little wonder that politicians are willing to spend enormous amounts of money and effort to become a seated member of Congress!
