We eat an immensity of meat. It requires 4 deer an Elk and a deer, or one Buffalo, to supply us plentifully for 24 hours. Meat now forms our food principally, as we reserve our flour, parched meal, and corn as much as possible for the Rocky mountains, which we are shortly to enter, and where, from the Indian account, game is not very abundant.

Now WHY would the Donner party need all that meat ? They were a walking meat locker.

Dude!! You are bad!
It was a serious question though. I'm curious as to where Tom is going with this. Of course, he could have tossed it out there as a grenade just to watch it explode!

Ok I apologize, that was in bad taste.
Actually it sounds like the Lewisham and Clark expedition. They had a bunch of rough and hungry folks to feed. That's my guess.

Either that or Slatten's great great grandfather.

Donner party was later than that
The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers led by George Donner and James F. Reed who set out for California in a wagon train in May 1846.

Could be Lewis and Clarke expedition.

You need to send Big Dog a jar of Top 'O Texas pickled okra, Tom! He won! What better trophy could a man recieve?!

I read that back in my pre teen years myself. I was a geek about that sort of stuff. I have forgotten much, but remember some. I need to re-read a lot of it. I was always fascinated about the battle of the Alamo, and everything about it. Then life kicked in, and I had to join it!
I need to get back to those sorts of things!

You're a good man Tom!! Don't let anyone tell you different!!

Thanks for every thing Arch. Talk o Texas okra pickles are now regular table fare here. The Journals of Lewis and Clark are intriguing . This land was once a pristine place undisturbed by human activity. I'm reading about a half hour each morning before I have to join life. Some how I wish I lived back in time. Things are so complicated now. It used to be that a man with a good rifle an axe and a bowie knife could make his way. Things sure changed in a little over 200 years.
