In dealing with the folks on OPP main for more than a year I've learned a few things. I have a certain amount of respect for conservative thinking as I am fairly conservative in my own circumstances: I abhor debt, think folks should earn their own way, think that rights come with responsibilities, etc.

Some of the things I've learned:

-some conservatives are extremely racist and proud of it. Most others seem to tolerate that as 'free speech'.
- some are intolerant of different points of view.
-some are prone to verbal violence when challenged.
-some know only the history of their country that confirms their already held beliefs.
-they are afraid of the future and change.
-their hatred of the President colors every idea, whether the President has anything to do with the issue or not.

The list is longer, but that is enough for now. It seems that conservatives have no tolerance for the complexity and ambiguity that comes with living. They call it having a moral compass, whereas progressives are moral relativists. THat must make life very hard for them because we live in a revolutionary society and age. The US has always been an agent of change and revolution, and overturned the cherished notions of the old guard. Perhaps that is why conservatives seem so bitter:

they are constantly railing and fighting against forces that the cannot change and cannot defeat.

If they weren't so mean and angry, I'd almost feel sorry for them.

Whether coming from the left or right of the political spectrum, I believe "The complexity of life and reality of life will always explode rigid ideology."

Hi Slatten 49
I appreciate you seeing things that way. It seems flexibility in thinking and behavior is a key to leading a happy and fulfilling life.

Why is it necessary for everyone to wear a label, and be painted into groups with a broad brush like this?

Short answer: I don't know.

I have had a long running private message exchange with one conservative member that I truly enjoyed. No name calling, no hostility, etc. You and I have had civil exchanges.

I certainly don't think that all conservatives are wrong or bad folks. My family is conservative and we get along. Could be the nature of a public forum on the internet.

I know not all progressives are smart or tolerant. That's why I like a little ambiguity in discussions. But sometimes the hostility becomes too much on the main board. One thing that hostility does is make me think about my own views, and I know in my heart that American progressives are not as portrayed on the main board and sometimes it just feels good to say so without running into some of the posters who would say we are evil, or anti-American.

I hope to continue having civil discussions with any conservative who would like to....just not sure it's possible on the big board.

I have always found you to be very civil, and I enjoy that. As humans, we just aren't going to see things the same way all of the time. Nor should we.
I agree that the nastiness on the main board gets to be too much most of the time. It is a kind of therapy for me. It makes me look at my own thoughts, ideas, opinions, and behavior.

I don't claim to have all of the answers either. But there really is no need for most of the disrespect that goes on here on both sides. I know the world is changing. It will continue to change. It has to. That is just the natural progression of things. It seems to me though, that things are being forced more and more anymore.
I don't have a problem changing, and adapting, but I don't like being forced into it. Hell, if I were the cave man everyone thinks I am I wouldn't be talking to you now. I think there are many like me who just want to live, and let live.

I appreciate that. I found myself engaging in some of the incivility and did not like it. That's why came here.... to vent a little bit, take a few breaths and stay away from the main board.

Mr. Bunker, it's been a pleasure. Chores are calling. Talk to you later.

I do not believe as individuals any of us are all conservative or all progressive. I know I'm not. I am very conservative on the issues of gun control, don't want it, very conservative on immigration, we can't afford open borders, and very progressive on health care, taking care of Vets, and tax system which is fair for everyone.

It seems to me all we have now are representatives owned by the elite. None of them have any idea what it is like to own a small business or work for a living, while watching prices go up and wages go down. They are all so far removed from the average person, they have no idea how to solve the problems and most of them only care for the dollar bill. Both parties are bought and paid for. If you look closely both Democrats and Republicans make sure the elite are cared for. They are nothing more than the right or left hand of corporate America.

I pretty much agree. Right now money is in control. Where does money come from? Producers, workers! The elites are takers, not producers.
I deeply resent paying more for everything including taxes, while the government makes it easier to not work than to work.
Every able bodied man, woman, and child
should pay their own freight, or get off my truck!
It's called personal responsibility. If I don't get up, and show some of that now, I'm thinking I might have to buy another cast iron skillet after my wife ruins another one by hitting me in the head with it! Gotta get busy!

Should the 1970's wage freeze stayed in?

Common Sense thinking, all major purchases are based off the MIDDLE INCOME.

The cost of a standard passenger car will run you right in about ONE YEARS WAGES.

So lets see today an average home will cost you right in about TWO AND A HALF YEARS WAGES.

So lets see today standard passenger car will run you right in about $30,000 to $40,000.

So lets see today an average home will cost you right in about $90,000 to $120,000.

The last brand new pickup truck bought was a 1978 3/4 Chevrolet, I pull off the lot at $5,600.00 to day for the same truck will cost you $45,000-$50,000.

Did not do real well in Highschool my day started at 4:00am moved 4 lines of a farmers sprinkler system. Come home feed the chickens, pigs, horses and cows, milked two cows. And was taught that there is absolutely nothing in this world that is free, some where along the line some one had to pay for it!

Then bathed and got ready for school, after school I started all over again. Right out of Highschool in 1967, joined the U. S. Air Force and out in 1974.

Got a job with a fertilizer manufacturing company for 40 years, was a car caring union member, but not 100% union. What a lot of people do not realize, is and business, doses not pay your wages, consumers pay your wages.

They more you want in your pocket, the more it cost the consumers to buy the product you are producing.

This use to be the land of opportunity and promise, but we have one side that is vastly turning it into a land of welfare just to buy them votes, I use to think that was their end game, but I have change my mind.

I most defiantly feel this is their end game:

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a
(DICTATORSHIP).
