Last 'Left-Leaning' Commercial Radio Program Goes Off Air in NYC

WWRL 1600 AM is a radio station in New York City that was dominated by liberal talking points. Now, it’s turning into a Spanish-language music and talk station.

“Next week, when WWRL 1600 AM flips its format from progressive talk to Spanish-language music and talk, New York will have no left-leaning commercial talk station for the first time in decades — an ironic development just as an unabashedly liberal mayor and City Council are set to take office.”

Political anchor Errol Louis lamented the news in an editorial called “What K**led the Liberal Radio Star?” for Thursday’s NY Daily News:

“Sad to say, the steady elimination of progressive radio from the airwaves is part of a nationwide crisis facing commercial radio.”

Louis cites the deregulation of the airwaves, which allowed conglomerates like Clear Channel (owned in part by Bain Capital) to buy up hundreds of stations and the hard economics of persuading businesses to advertise on local radio as part of the blame for disappearing liberal radio. He also points to a shift from the airwaves to the mainstream. For instance, Rachel Maddow, Ed Shultz and Al Sharpton, all who previously catered to listeners on radio talk shows, now cater to viewers on their own cable TV programs. Those don’t seem to be doing too well either, however, suggesting maybe it’s not just the liberal talk base that’s shrinking.
Although liberals may not want to hear it, it seems left-wing talk radio is becoming extinct.

Ratings:

Rachel Maddow 159,000
Kelly 228,000

Al Sharpton 93,000
Baier 279,000

Ed Shultz 94,000
The Five 388,000

I lied,, here is a quote from the article:

"The biggest pressures squeezing liberal talk radio are commercial ones. Deregulation of the airwaves allowed conglomerates like Clear Channel to borrow billions from Wall Street and begin buying up stations by the hundreds. Saddled with debt, Clear Channel has ruthlessly standardized its 840 stations and squeezed each for maximum profit. That meant eliminating progressive talk from its stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland."

T***slation,,, nobody wants to listen,, much less pay to listen to a whiny bunch of stupid libs,,,,,,,

Rush may be correct I still don't care for him. I'd rather have Tony Snow back.

I am probably the only "conservative" in the world who has never once listened to Rush Limbaugh. Since I have been accused of parroting Limbaugh, I can only conclude that we are two stupendous intellects who arrived independently at the same conclusion, although I have been calumnied as having modesty issues.

I have to join you on not listening to Rush. Not really sure what it is, maybe on TV I could.

What I like about Limbaugh is that he has fun!!
He isn't full of h**e,,, if you want h**e, listen to Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow,, or even Maher.... that is h**e.

Rush has political leanings,,, which frankly I think are middle of the road,,, mine are far right mostly,,, but listening to rush, makes you feel better somehow,,, listening to Ed/Rachel/Maher,,, makes you feel worse,,, you can decide, after all freedom is what I fought for!

For me I'd rather read Rush and listen to him. While I usually agree with him just something I don't care for. As for the crew at MSNBC they are to most h**eful crew I have ever heard.

Someone bring back Paul Harvey!

For all the left leaning b/s I read on here you'd think they'd be doing better in the rating.

The system never lives up to that great intent and then when it fails they blame anyone but themselves.

Michael Savage (A NEW WAVE?) has taken over the 3-5PM NYC WABC 770AM (EST) M-F radio slot from John Hannity starting January 1,2014.................Savage is the pundit who defined liberalism as a "mental disorder".
