As 2013 draws to a close, Fox News Channel continues to dominate cable television news programming, according to Nielsen data through Dec. 8.

In an article for Variety, Rick Kissell stated that Fox has averaged 1.774 million viewers in prime time -- down 13 percent from last year's p**********l e******n-driven numbers -- while the Cable News Channel fell 15 percent, and MSNBC lost 29 percent.

However, not all the news regarding Fox was positive. The 297,000 people in the important demographic of adults from 25 to 54 years of age was down 30 percent compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, Kissell noted that MSNBC followed with 203,000 adults (down 29 percent), and CNN drew 187,000 adults, falling 16 percent.

The reporter then stated:

Among all basic cable networks in 2013, FNC ranked sixth in prime time while MSNBC was 29th and CNN was 31st.

In total day, Fox ran fourth while CNN was 28th and MSNBC ran 30th; in 2012, CNN finished behind MSNBC. CNN and HLN showed some year-over-year gains on a total-day basis, while FNC and MSNBC were down.

One of the biggest developments in 2013 was the fact that the popular Fox News Channel made significant changes to its prime-time lineup.

Starting Oct. 7, On the Record with Greta Van Susteren moved from 10 p.m. to 7 o'clock, where it has regularly doubled Chris Matthews' Hardball audience. The O'Reilly Factor remained in its 8 p.m. slot, where it is still the top show in cable news with 2.78 million total viewers and 439,000 in the important demographic.

O'Reilly has often quadrupled the numbers for All In with Chris Hayes by garnering 3.22 million viewers compared to the MSNBC audience of' 851,000. The demographic score has been 506,000 to 178,000.

In addition, The Kelly File with Megyn Kelly generated a tremendous boost that improved the 9 o'clock audience by 23 percent in total viewers and 13 percent in adults 25-54 and tripling ratings of MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show.

Also on the move was Hannity, which at 10 p.m. more than doubles the numbers for The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC.

Kissell noted that the only network to gain viewers in the past 12 months was HLN. Formerly known as the Headline News channel, the low-rated cable television outlet increased its audience to 403,000 total viewers, up 21 percent, and 142,000 in the important demographic of adults 25 to 54 years old, a boost of 27 percent.

Of course, the network began 2012 with low ratings, so its growth doesn't change its status as the last-place finisher in cable television news programming.

The network that started the year with the most anticipation was CNN, with Jeff Zucker -- the former head of NBC Universal -- taking the reins of the once-dominant channel that is on pace for its least-watched year in prime time.

Zucker, who later claimed that CNN “covers much more” than rivals Fox News and MSNBC, brought in several new shows, which saw considerable growth in May over the previous year. He lured newsman Jake Tapper away from ABC News to helm The Lead With Jake Tapper, which comes in second among the cable news channels in its time slot.

He also hired Chris Cuomo to serve as one of the hosts of the early morning program New Day, which also started with a ratings boost and led to a “cozy interview” with president Barack Obama.

However, the ratings for both new programs diminished during the final months of the year as CNN -- which had either tied or surpassed earlier numbers for MSNBC-- was forced to shift from mostly hard news to non-news programming such as the vulgarity-laced travel show Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Nevertheless, not all of Zucker's programs have been successful. (Get to) The Point, an obvious ripoff of The Five on Fox News Channel, did so poorly in the ratings that it was pulled off the air within days and then described as a “week-long experiment.”

Looking over the ratings for the past year, I have to admit that I'm baffled as to why MSNBC is so slow in dealing with the network's poor numbers. Yes, they returned Ed Schultz to weekday programming, but how long can they last with such terrible prime-time ratings?

Are they holding on until the mid-term e******ns next year in the hope that liberals will once again flock to their channel to hear their point of view repeated? If so, then 2014 will be an interesting year.

How can true knowledge ever evolve from lies and denial of facts?

If the opinions of the left,, are correct and they're in the majority,,, and that the majority must have the best chance of being correct,,,, then the migration of the majority away from you in such massive numbers show that you are being fled "from," because of your inability to separate the t***h,, or even facts from you belief system...
Which is why I say,, Liberalism is a baseless religion, that cannot stand heretics, introspection, or even questioning, you know,, , all the thing the libs claim the religious do,, and revile them for.

So is the majority just stupid,, and incapable of digesting the dogma you spew,,,,, or are you really wrong?
And we know that libs will destroy this world before admitting they are wrong,,, but nothing they have done,,,,not a single liberal idea has worked,,, and they are sure that all they need is the rest of someone elses money,,,,,, and if that doesn't work, they will begin to round people up, and gas and burn them,,,,, just like the N**is they claim everyone else is,,,

So what else is new? Money and power, power and money, that's all ANY of those goofs in DC care about. Liberal this, conservative that, all meaningless rhetoric. Labels are tools used to separate different people/groups but only in the interests of gaining control. Once IN control, they do what they want and labels are for the other guy.
The media are controlled by handful of corporations which use them for their own purposes. No one should expect honest accurate reporting from any of them.

Can you imagine how things would be with no FOX news. The White House would love for them to disappear.

Brain dead? Countless stories have been broken on FOX that didn't get picked by the other for days if at all. Turn on the light when you read.

No,,, that is exactly what we "should" expect,,,, news,, not editorialism....

Fox is slightly left,,, they are NOT right wing,,, not with some of the guests and commentators,,, but at least they don't represent themselves (the guests and commentators) as unbiased News reporters,,,,
On several threads,,, libs have demanded that I pay attention and homage to their,,, "factual data" as proof that what I observe is incorrect. If you read their quoted stories,,, you find they are almost verbatim,,, everyone in the "Mainstream Media" just cuts and pastes news stories from the web.... ONLY fox tries to do anything more,,, and yet they still screw up sometimes....
That isn't news,,,,, that is propaganda,,, and what the White house press corp does to reporting should get them arrested for prostitution...so yeah,, fox is NOT right wing,,, it is just that the other "media" is SOOO far left, and of course so smug, that they think they are right in everything,, that they seem to be far right,,, I suppose in the left wing govt news media's perspective Fox is Right wing,,, but what wouldn't be?
They are not all alike, and the market is swinging away from the left,,,, it is becoming no longer left or right,,, it is right and wrong,,, the left is clearly wrong, and the numbers show their backing evaporating.

I believe the left/right thing is not linear,, it is circular,,, the left will proceed so far left that they will become and are becoming f*****t in their beliefs and their demand that we conform,,, looking at what is happening with word and thought police,, who screech diversity and tolerance,,,are the most intolerant of anyones opinion, that doesn't adhere to what they believe,,,

You obviously have never watched Fox News. Fox News has made a shift to the left lately. Hannity is about the only real conservative on the network. O'Reilly, Greta, and Kelly are moderates. Fox News has hired a whole slew of l*****t contributors, I can't even watch it anymore.

Why? I want to hear both sides. Democrats have screwed things up so bad it's fun to watch them spin themselves right into the ground.

I would be a little cautious seeing this as a positive. Have you seen the list of the top ten shows? Or this? http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/honey-boo-boo-swamp-people-duck-dynasty-ratings-17506245

In surveys and ratings, nothing but the facts overwhelming loses hands down to entertainment factors. "Reality shows" are the ruling aristocracy of TV. What is their major draw? Human Conflict! Fear, anger, and h**e fuels some of the more popular shows while other shows are highly rated for their off the deep end way of life, such as Honey Boo Boo. Fox News is right up there.

Your correct but I'm thinking more apples to apples. NFL has at least one in the top 10 every week but that's also a different category.

Following what is trending in America, and globally, especially with the overwhelming fixation of social media, news--real journalism--is not in. Something like Kim Kardasian changing her hairstyle gets far more attention than the death toll in Afghanistan or "the big lie of Obama."How do you compete with this popular trend of news as entertainment? Fox News. There is a site I hit accidentally that had the 100 Spins of Fox News, stories they turned into "scandals" and conflict where neither existed.

Of course such an attitude toward Fox News will only be taken as a liberal Obamabot natural impulse to defend and his coming New World Order...if one does not take a step back intellectually and be objective.

So what would a "GOOD Dr of Democracy" say about the other side of the media that allows Obama to collect their emails, phone calls, as well as there parents phone calls, and prosecute them, and then grovels on the floor in front of Jay Karney,,, pleading that they just be allowed to be in his august presence, more often??????? Or continues getting radiculopathic "thrills" down or even up their leg????
