Felons could account for up to 10% of the roughly 130 million Americans expected to v**e in the Nov. 6 e******n, more than enough to affect the razor-thin margins that could determine the outcome. "Criminals are not a popular constituency," says James Hamm, 64, who spent 17 years in prison in Arizona for a drug-related homicide and now heads an inmate advocacy group with his wife, a retired judge. "Politicians don't want to say, 'Hey, I have the backing of people who committed crimes.'" Still, both p**********l campaigns have reason to be attentive to the estimated 13.4 million felons who are eligible to v**e. Felons traditionally v**e Democratic, says Christopher Uggen, a University of Minnesota sociologist, who co-authored a 2006 book, "Locked Out: Felony Disenfranchisement and American Democracy." That is, he said, because felons come disproportionately from groups that align with Democrats, such as minorities, the poor and urban residents. In this group, Uggen says, "you aren't going to find too many Mitt Romney supporters." A 2010 study that Uggen participated in found that just one in five felons who are eligible to v**e actually do so, most mistakenly believing they are not. Myriad state laws that take different approaches to restoring felons' v****g rights contribute to the confusion. There are an estimated 20 million felons in the United States, including 1.5 million now in prison, according to statistics provided by Uggen. About 5.6 million of them are forbidden to v**e by state laws. Depending on where they were convicted, the other 13.4 million have either had their v****g rights restored or never lost them, even when incarcerated. While campaigns generally steer clear of convicted criminals, the Obama camp has reached out to them in at least one place, the undecided hotbed of Ohio. The only felons in the state prohibited from v****g are those behind bars on E******n Day. Ohio has an estimated 784,0000 felons, 52,000 of them in prison. The others are on probation, out on parole, or have finished their sentences. Neither Obama nor Romney campaign spokespeople replied to repeated requests for comment about efforts to get out the felon v**e. Nancy Abudu, senior staff counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union's V****g Rights Project, said felons "face a lot of roadblocks and discrimination in trying to exercise their right to v**e." "The states haven't done a good job telling people when their rights have been restored," Abudu said, adding that officials themselves are often confused about the law. In 38 states, most felons automatically regain the right to v**e once they complete their sentences, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Felons in others states must not only complete their sentences but wait a certain amount of time before they can again cast b****ts. In Maine and Vermont, felons never forfeit their right to v**e. In Florida, Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia, felons are barred from v****g unless the governor decides otherwise. In 2007, then-governor of Florida Charlie Crist, a Republican, allowed nonviolent first offenders to get their v****g rights restored automatically upon release from prison. He subjected others to a review. Four years later the state's Republican Governor Rick Scott ended Crist's reforms and imposed tough hurdles, including a waiting period of five to seven years (depending upon the crime) after completion of a sentence before felons can even apply for restoration. "Studies show that the recidivism rate for felons goes down significantly when they are given back their basic civil rights, including the right to v**e," said Ron Bilbao of the ACLU in Florida. "The governor went in the wrong direction." Marc Mauer, executive director of the Sentencing Project, a nonprofit advocacy group for criminal justice, said ex-inmates are generally ignored when it comes to v****g. "There simply isn't a lot of encouragement for them to even register," said Mauer. "If we believe everyone should v**e, we shouldn't put character conditions on it." Betty Smithey, 70, was released from prison in Arizona in August after spending 49 years behind bars for murder. Hawaii official now swears: No Obama birth certificate. Signs affidavit declaring long-form, hospital-generated document absent.
Published: 01/24/2011 at 8:48 PM Former Hawaii e******ns clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. Adams was employed at the City and County of Honolulu E******ns Division from May 2008 through September 2008. His position was senior e******ns clerk, overseeing a group of 50 to 60 employees responsible for verifying the identity of v**ers at the Absentee B****t Office. It was in this capacity that Adams became aware of the search for Obama’s birth-certificate records. What? You stupid,’” Adams said. “She usually spoke well, but in saying this she reverted to a Hawaiian dialect. I really didn’t know how to respond to that. She said it and just walked off. She was quite a powerful lady.” Moreover, Adams was told that neither Queens Memorial Hospital nor Kapi’olani Medical Center had any records of Obama’s birth at their medical facilities: “Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu E******ns Division further told me on multiple occasions that Hawaii State government officials had made inquires about Sen. Obama’s birth records to officials at Queens Medical Center and Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu and that neither hospital had any record of Senator Obama having been born there, even though Governor Abercrombie is now asserting and various Hawaii government officials continue to assert Barack Obama Jr. was born at Kapi’olani Medical Center on Aug. 4, 1961.” “We called the two hospitals in Honolulu: Queens and Kapi’olani,” Adams stressed. “Neither of them have any records that Barack Obama was born there.” In 2009, WND documented that Obama and his supporters had first claimed he was born at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, before the story changed to Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu. After WND’s report on the two conflicting hospitals, online news sites including the United Press International and Snopes.com scrubbed their websites to eliminate any reference to Queens Medical Center, substituting instead that Obama was born at Kapi’olani Medical Center without explaining the discrepancy or the correction. In 2010, then-candidate for governor Neil Abercrombie was involved in an Obama birth controversy when he read a letter at a Kapi’olani Medical Center centennial dinner in Honolulu that supposedly was authored by President Obama, claiming Kapi’olani as his birth hospital. As WND reported, the letter read by Abercrombie and initially displayed on the Kapi’olani website turned out to be a computer-created likeness of a letter using HTML code, the building blocks of Internet websites, not an actual paper letter. The White House has still not confirmed it wrote or sent the letter. Moreover, Adams claims, the Hawaii government was engaged in a cover-up designed to tell the American public through the Obama-supporting mainstream media that Obama was born in Hawaii, even though no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Obama could be found on record in the Hawaii Department of Health. In the affidavit Adams swears, “During the course of my employment, I came to understand that for political reasons, various officials in the government of Hawaii, including then-Governor Linda Lingle and various officials of the Hawaii Department of Health, including Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the director of the Hawaii Department of Health, were making representations that Senator Obama was born in Hawaii, even though no government official in Hawaii could find a long-form birth certificate for Senator Obama that had been issued by a Hawaii hospital at the time of his birth.” Adams further swears his supervisors told him to quit asking about Obama’s birth records. “During the course of my employment,” Adams states in the affidavit, “I was told by senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu E******ns Division to stop inquiring about Senator Obama’s Hawaii birth records, even though it was common knowledge among my fellow employees that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama.” “I can go get my long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate,” Adams told WND. “And so I don’t understand, this whole controversy should have been settled three or four years ago in about five minutes.” Nor does Adams feel the short-form Certification of Live Birth is authoritative documentation proving that Obama was born in Hawaii. “My basic assumption is that he wasn’t born there,” Adams said. “Certifications of Live Birth were given to people who were born at home, or to people who were born overseas and whose parents brought them back to the islands. If his parents were U.S. citizens, or if one parent was a U.S. citizen, as was the case with Obama, the family would apply for a Hawaiian birth certificate when the parents came back from overseas. That’s normally how you would have gotten on [a Certification of Live Birth] in the 1960s.” WND has reported that in 1961, Obama’s grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, could have made an in-person request at the Hawaii Department of Health for a registration of a Hawaii birth, even if the infant Barack Obama Jr. had been foreign-born. In the past few days, Abercrombie has represented that there is a registration of Obama’s birth in the state archives. But the state registration of birth in 1961 theoretically could prove only that the grandparents had registered Obama’s birth, even if Obama was not born in Hawaii. Similarly, the newspaper announcements of baby Obama’s birth do not prove he was born in Hawaii, since the newspaper announcements could have been triggered by the grandparents appearing in-person to register baby Obama as a Hawaiian birth, even if the baby was born elsewhere. WND has documented that the address reported in the birth announcements published in the Hawaii newspapers at the time, 6085 Kalanianaole Highway, was the address where the grandparents lived. WND has also reported that Barack Obama Sr. maintained his own separate apartment in Honolulu at an 11th Avenue address, even after he was supposedly married to Ann Dunham, Barack Obama’s mother, and that Ann Dunham left Hawaii within three weeks of the baby’s birth to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. Dunham did not return to Hawaii until after Barack Obama Sr. left Hawaii in June 1962 to attend graduate school at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. It’s possible the yet-undisclosed birth record in the state archives that Abercrombie has discovered may have come from the grandparents registering baby Obama’s birth, an event that would have triggered both the newspaper birth announcements and availability of a Certification of Live Birth, even if no long-form record exists. WND has confirmed with Glen Takahashi, e******ns administrator for the city and county of Honolulu, that Adams was indeed working in their e******ns offices during the last p**********l e******n. “We hire temporary workers, because we’re seasonal,” Takahashi told WND. Adams told WND he supported Hillary Clinton during the 2008 p**********l e******n campaign. He described himself as a libertarian who wants less government spending, fewer laws that restrict personal freedoms, more adherences to the Constitution and an end to foreign wars. “I’m interested in individual liberty and upholding the Constitution,” he said. “I want to get American troops out from foreign countries, and I want to see the federal budget balanced.” He said he might be inclined to support former-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee or former-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in 2012 to run against President Obama, but he has not yet made up his mind. “It depends on how fiscally conservative Huckabee and Romney turn out to be on economics,” he said. “But from what I know right now, they would probably be better than Obama.”

A long awaited press conference was given by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a five time elected Sheriff, which should have made national and international headlines. Arpaio’s credentials include serving in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953, service as a federal narcotics agent serving in countries all over the world with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and served as the head of the Arizona DEA. Without doubt, this is a serious Law Enforcement Officer, not one to be taken in by tin-foil-hat wearing loons.
Yet, in the five days since his revelations there has been little in the way of serious reporting on the findings he presented in his presser. The president himself created the scene; one filled laughter from an adoring press corp., a scene of unprecedented fanfare while holding a forged document which was later posted on the White House website. This was the news Sheriff Arpaio revealed on March 1, 2012 in Arizona. Arpaio asserts that his investigators discovered, during a 6 month long investigation which is ongoing, not only was the “Long Form” likely a digitally created forgery, but the presidents Selective Service Card (Draft Card), allegedly filed in 1980, was also a forgery. These documents are what Barack Hussein Obama relies upon to prove his constitutional eligibility to the office of President of the United States. Forged documents are being used to qualify a President of the United States for the office he holds. Or is usurped the more accurate term? The silence from the main stream media in the US is deafening. It almost seems as if the press is terrified to even think the question, let alone ask it: Is the President a criminal? The press in Arpaio’s audience were certainly asking him to state precisely that, yet nowhere has the question been asked of the White House by the press. Instead the American Press is aggressively protecting the presumed President of the United States, pushing the fraud upon both America and the world, supporting a man who may well have usurped the office. For months before Mr. Obama released the April 2011 forgery, American businessman Donald Trump had been demanding that the president show the country definitive proof that he was born in the state of Hawaii, and eligible for the Office of President. The birth certificate forgery which was presented by Mr. Obama was in response to the repeated public requests from the billionaire businessman.
One can easily imagine the reaction of the press had this scenario been about George W. Bush in 2004.
On the contrary, the press itself forged documents regarding the 43rd President: Long term CBS newsman Dan Rather lost his credibility along with his job when he presented forged Air National Guard documents allegedly denigrating the president’s service in the 1970&#8242;s. One can imagine the glee evidence presented by law enforcement officials of a real forgery made by President Bush would have generated. The press feeding frenzy would have eclipsed that of Watergate, the most controversial political event in modern America history which led to the resignation of President Nixon in August of 1974. The questions in the White House Press room would have been merciless to say the very least. What has been the response from the Obama era press? Silence. Silence so loud it can be felt. What has been the response from the 44th president so far? A tweet from Obama Campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt, containing a link to the conspiracy theory television show “The X-files” theme song: a mocking, Saul Alinsky like, retort. High Crimes and Misdemeanors appear to have been committed by the President of the United States or his personal representatives in presenting a forged document to the press and the Nation as a legitimate document, and this information has been delivered from Law Enforcement Officials. Arpaio refused to take the bait offered by a clearly hostile press in the conference room. He refused to accuse the president directly, instead informing the world that they had a “person of interest” in the forgery, and were continuing with the investigation. Where is the outrage from the press?? As surreal as this is, it isn’t the main event. It’s only a part of a larger story. Citizenship. Years before the 2008 e******n, Barack Obama was involved in efforts to amend the US Constitution to allow those who were born to parents who were not citizens to become President along with those born overseas. Those efforts have occurred several times in recent history, and all have failed. It must be intelligently asked why this was a concern at all for the then Senator. There are two reasons for Obama’s concern. The first lay in Article 2 section 1 of the constitution which states: “No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President,”. Except for Barack Obama. The second reason for Obama’s concern lies in the Supreme Court of the United States case Minor V. Happersett (88 U.S. 162) 1875 which defines Natural Born Citizen: “The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners.” Minor v. Happersett, 88 U.S. 162, 168. This U.S. Supreme Court case decided that Virginia Minor, the plaintiff, could not use the 14th Amendment to claim citizenship and the right to v**e because she was a Natural Born Citizen, and therefore unable to lay claim to the statutory citizenship the 14th Amendment gave to former s***es, which included their right to v**e. This is the only U.S. Supreme Court case in the history of the United States to clearly define what a Natural Born Citizen is. It has been cited in dozens of cases since.
This is an issue which cannot be brushed aside by Mr. Obama. His father, Barack Obama Sr. was a student from the British Commonwealth of Kenya, a British Citizen who never sought to become a US Citizen, and indeed was eventually forced to leave the country. Mr. Obama has only one parent who was an American Citizen. Obama clearly does not meet the requirements of Natural Born Citizen as defined by the Supreme Court in Minor v. Happersett.
The Founding Fathers, the men who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, discussed these very reasons why no person of divided loyalties, divided nationalities, should ever have command of America’s armed forces. Dozens of letters and many debates in the constitutional conventions recorded these concerns, always returning the “Law of Nations“, Emerich De Vattel’s encyclopedic record of the laws civilized nations had developed over two thousand years of which the founders were clearly aware of in their debates: “The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights.” E. De Vattel 1758 Sec 212 Ch19
Vattel’s definition has been accepted since the days the United States was still a motley collection of British Colonies. It has been accepted in no less that 3 Supreme Court Cases, has been accepted in testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives. It is by no means an original source; only recently dug out of dusty tomes in 2008. Indeed, this concept is enshrined in every Nation the world over. Every nation not only accepts, but has enshrined this concept: a person born to two parents who were citizens of that nation and born on its soil was a natural born citizen of that nation.
After his rousing 2004 speech at the Democrat National Convention, Barack Obama was considered a shoe-in for running for president in 2008, and indeed his campaign began that night in Boston. Yet his citizenship was a serious obstacle to his ambitions, and the ambitions of the liberal progressive movement which supported him. (I was kicked out of Boston Harbor Jet skiing this week of the convention). So the efforts to obfuscate Obama’s citizenship issues began in earnest. The plan was deviously simple, make certain that people focused on his Hawaiian documents, and minimize the visibility of Minor V. Happersett and Citizenship to the public.
The State of Hawaii. The state of Hawaii’s role in this cannot be neglected for several reasons. Hawaii has a couple of legal Achilles heels of its own. It was well known at the time, that any person could register the birth of a child in the state on a late form with only the signature of a witness (Hawaii Department of Health no longer uses this form). This means of obtaining Hawaiian documents was used frequently by immigrants who needed assistance from the state (such as welfare), and Hawaii needed the federal dollars registering those births brought to the state. Second, and perhaps most importantly, Federal laws with regard to Hawaii had been written to allow a baby receiving state documents to be declared a Citizen of the United States without being subject to the Jurisdiction of the United States: Sec. 305. [8 U.S.C. 1405] Persons born in Hawaii:
A person born in Hawaii on or after August 12, 1898, and before April 30, 1900, is declared to be a citizen of the United States as of April 30, 1900. A person born in Hawaii on or after April 30, 1900, is a citizen of the United States at birth. A person who was a citizen of the Republic of Hawaii on August 12, 1898, is declared to be a citizen of the United States as of April 30, 1900. Missing from this US Statute is the following which appears in the 14th Amendment: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
This disparity created a legal loophole which is specific to Hawaii: A child born in Hawaii, regardless of whether or not they were born in the state and subject to the Jurisdiction of the United States, automatically gained US Citizenship. This is the only state in the United States where this condition existed. This is why Hawaii is so vitally important to Obama, and could explain why it is important enough to forge birth documents for. It is why Obama’s birth is being alleged to have occurred there instead of somewhere like Washington State or elsewhere, and is so vitally important.
Obama, by being born in Hawaii, got automatic citizenship status in the United States without regard for whether the United States had jurisdiction over his citizenship. Otherwise, his citizenship would have legally followed his father’s, British, as Barack himself admitted on his “Fight the Smears” website during the ’08 campaign.
And it only took a witness signature to gain it. It is unknown how many children gained U.S. citizenship through this means. The real citizenship status of these individuals is similarly unknown, and now that it has been discovered that Barack Obama has put forth a forged Hawaiian Birth certificate, his own proof of birth in the state is subject to serious questions by law enforcement officials.
Months before the e******n of 2008 Barack Obama began deliberately directing public attention to his Hawaiian Records. The Obama campaign, before redirecting the site to “Attack Watch” maintained the “Fight the Smears” website which can still be found on archival websites. The Obama campaign posted the candidate’s “short Form” birth certificate with the following information from FactCheck.com:
“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.’s children. Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on Aug. 4, 1982.” The campaign obviously wanted public attention directed at his birth documents in Hawaii. The campaign itself created the entire birth certificate controversy, and acted to maintain and fan the flames of that controversy for several truly simple reasons. As long as the public was wondering about what being born under “the British Nationality Act of 1948&#8243; meant, and the birth certificate “birther” controversy in general, they were not looking into laws which would have legally prevented the senator from assuming the role of candidate and then President. Legal cases such as Minor V. Happersett.
This case was, and still is, of tremendous import. Had it been found during the campaign it would have prevented his candidacy, certainly preventing him from taking the oath of office in Jan 2009. So a campaign to hide Minor V. Happersett was undertaken at the same time. Justia. Happersett in the summer of 2008, erasing the name and specific text quoted from the case, along with specific citations to it out of dozens of Supreme Court cases which cited it over 138 years of American Supreme Court History. The controversy was dubbed “JustiaGate“.
The author of this article personally documented and published the scrubbing done by Justia, documented the failure of Tim Stanley’s explanation for the “errors”, and assisted in the research which connected Justia.com to Public.Resource.Org, where Stanley is on the board of directors. Public.Resource.org is the source of Supreme Court materials in data form Justia.com receives for publication. Public.Resource.org is owned and run by Carl Malamud, and funded in part by the Center for American Progress once run by John Podesta, and funded by George Soros. This is a direct connection to the Soros Foundation, a major source of political donations to Barack Obama and the Democrat Party. Justia erased “Minor v. Happersett” along with text quoted from the case out of its Supreme Court servers deliberately in an effort to minimize the ability of the public to find the case by searching for it, significantly reducing its apparent importance. These two separate efforts, raising the profile of the Senator’s birth certificate in as controversial a manner as possible, while minimizing the legal role of Minor v. Happersett succeeded. Barack Obama was able to illegally win the e******n, and illegally take office. It was stolen right in front of the American public.
The house of cards is about to come tumbling down around Barack Obama’s ears as the momentum of evidence builds. Law enforcement has found his birth documents to be “highly suspect” as a forgery. His draft card has similarly been found by law enforcement as being “highly suspect” as a forgery. The smoke screen cover created by his birth certificate, hiding Minor v. Happersett in a shadow of false mockery, has been blown away. Leaving the Supreme Court case alone on the stage, glaringly exposing Barack Obama as an usurper, an unconstitutional President of the United States. The American Press is deliberately hiding the evidence published on the internet about this defrauding of the American public and the deliberate evisceration of the Constitution of the United States. It is hiding Barack Obama’s Fraud as it has been revealed by a Sheriff in Arizona. The silence of the American press would be unbelievable if it weren’t so blatantly obvious. It is nearly as egregious as the audacity of Obama’s fraud itself.

Rich & poor Americans increasingly likely to live in separate neighborhoods. Carol Morello, 1 August 2012. Rising income ine******y has led to a growing number of Americans clustering in neighborhoods similarly affluent or similarly low-income. The Pew Research Center said the % of upper-income households situated in affluent neighborhoods doubled between 1980 and 2010, rising to 18%. In the same time frame, the share of lower-income households rose from 23 to 28% The predominantly middle class or home to a wider mix of income levels shrank. The Pew study is the latest scholarly analysis of census data showing the impact of a slow and steady squeezing of the middle class, which in turn has swelled the two income extremes. What sociologists call “segregation by income” at the neighborhood level has been underway for decades, but the most recent census data suggest that the pace picked up between 2000 and 2010. Pew found that the trend is most pronounced in the Southwest. The three cities with the most income segregation in the country are in Texas: San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. The study attributed that to an influx of, at one end, low-sk**led and low-wage workers from Mexico and Central America, and at the other end, high-sk**led workers and well-to-do retirees. The Washington region experienced a small rise in the share of neighborhoods that can be characterized as mostly well-off or mostly low-income. Among the nation’s 30 largest metropolitan areas, Washington falls smack in the middle in terms of income segregation, placing it slightly above the national average, according to the study. Pew calculated that the share of affluent households in the Washington area — those earning $171,000 or more — living in majority upper-income neighborhoods increased to 15% from 13% in 30 years. Both Pew and a study by two Stanford University sociologists last year say the biggest factor behind the growing residential isolation is a rise in income ine******y. The Stanford study said the share of families living in middle-income neighborhoods has dropped over 40 years from 67% to under 50%. Many other factors also are at play. William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, sees a generational divide at work, particularly in big cities. The baby boom generation bought houses in neighborhoods where their children are now priced out. “Younger people are still struggling to just buy a home, and the kind of neighborhoods where they end up are not nearly as nice,” he said. “Age isn’t a part of this study, but it underlies it.” Frey said the types of developments that have fueled growth in suburbs and exurbs have exacerbated income segregation. “They are where the McMansions were built,” he said. “As a result, these are areas segregated among the upper income.” Sean Reardon, one of the Stanford sociologists, found a similar trend going back four decades. He said restrictions on lot size have limited the construction of cheaper houses and apartment buildings in many new developments. At the same time, he said, a lot of high-density, low-income housing has been torn down and replaced by low-density housing throughout cities. Thomas Anderson, president of Washington Fine Properties, who has been selling real estate for more than 30 years in New York and the Washington area, said the high price of housing has added a new element to many buyers’ lists of must-haves. Many more home buyers now want to be sure that their neighbors have the financial wherewithal to maintain their properties and not have to enter into short sales, he said. “The price of real estate is so high that people are concerned about their investment,” he said. “It’s counterproductive to work hard to invest in a home that’s going to be negatively affected by a short sale.” The rising phenomenon of segregation by income — at a time when segregation by race is on the decline — may have implications for communities and politics. Reardon said a neighborhood that lacks socioeconomic diversity could be less supportive of taxes to fund schools, parks and social services in other neighborhoods. “If people with most of the money and wealth live separately from everyone else, there’s going to be less investment in the neighborhoods where the middle class and the poor live,” he said.

How to Pay No Taxes: Ten Strategies Used By the Rich. For the 400 U.S. taxpayers with the highest adjusted gross income, the effective federal income tax rate—fell from almost 30% in 1995 to just over 18% in 2008, according to the IRS. For the 1.4 million (top 1%) tax rate dropped from 29 % to 23% in 2008. It’s often the result of hard work, as suggested by some of the strategies below. Much of the income among the top 400 derives from dividends and capital gains, generated by everything from appreciated real estate—yes, there is some left—to stocks and the sale of family businesses. The true effective rate for multimillionaires is actually far lower than that indicated by official government statistics. That’s because those figures fail to include the additional income that’s generated by many sophisticated tax-avoidance strategies. Several of those techniques involve some variation of complicated borrowings that never get repaid, netting the beneficiaries hundreds of millions in tax-free cash. From 2003 to 2008, for example, Los Angeles Dodgers owner and real estate developer Frank H. McCourt Jr. paid no federal or state regular income taxes. For those who can afford a shrewd accountant or attorney, our era is rife with opportunities to avoid—or at least defer—tax bills, according to tax specialists and public records. It’s limited only by the boundaries of taste, creativity & ability to understand shelters.
The ‘No Sale’ Sale. Cashin without triggering capital-gains taxes. An executive has $200 million of company shares. He wants cash but doesn’t want to trigger $30 million or so in capital-gains taxes. 1. The executive borrows about $200 million from an investment bank, with the shares as collateral. Now he has cash. 2. To freeze the value of the collateral shares, he buys and sells “puts” and “calls.” These are options granting him the right to buy and sell them later at a fixed price, insuring against a crash. 3. He eventually can return the cash, or he can keep it. If he keeps it, he has to hand over the shares. The tax bill comes years after the initial borrowing. His money has been working for him all the while. Seller beware: The IRS challenged versions of these deals used by billionaire Philip Anschutz and Clear Channel Communications (CCMO) co-founder Red McCombs. A U.S. Tax Court judge in 2010 ruled that Anschutz owed $94 million in taxes on t***sactions entered into in 2000 and 2001. He lost an appeal last December. McCombs settled his case in 2011. Despite the court cases, such strategies “are alive and well,”
The Skyscraper Shuffle. Partnerships that let property owners liquidate without liability. Two people are 50-50 owners, through a partnership, of an office tower worth $100 million. One of the owners—let’s call him McDuck—wants to cash out, which would mean a $50 million gain and $7.5 million in capital-gains taxes. 1. McDuck needs to turn his ownership of the property into a loan. So the partnership borrows $50 million and puts it into a new subsidiary partnership, which contributes the cash to yet another new partnership. 2. The newest partnership lends that $50 million to a finance company for three years, in exchange for a three-year note. (The finance company takes the money and invests it or lends it out at a higher rate.) 3. The original partnership distributes its interest in the lower-tier subsidiary to McDuck. Now, McDuck owns a loan note worth $50 million instead of the property, effectively liquidating his 50% interest. 4. 3 years later, the note is repaid. McDuck now owns 100 % of a partnership sitting on a $50 million pile of cash—the amount McDuck would have received from selling his stake in the real estate—without triggering any capital-gains tax. 5. While this cash remains in the partnership, it can be invested or borrowed against. When McDuck dies, it can be passed along to heirs and liquidated or sold tax-free. The deferred tax liability disappears upon McDuck’s death, under a provision that eliminates such taxable gains for heirs. The Estate Tax Eliminator. How to leave future stock earnings to the kids and escape the estate tax. A wealthy parent with millions invested in the stock market wants to leave future earnings to his kids while avoiding the estate tax on those earnings. 1. The parent sets up a Grantor Retained Annuity Trust, or GRAT, listing the kids as beneficiaries. 2. The parent contributes, say, $100 million to the GRAT. Under the terms of the GRAT, the amount contributed to the trust, plus interest, must be fully returned to the parent over a predetermined period. 3. Wh**ever return the money earns in excess of the interest rate—the IRS currently requires 3 %—remains in the trust and gets passed on to the heirs, forever free of estate and gift taxes. The Trust Freeze. “Freezing” the value of an estate, so taxes don’t eat up its future appreciation. A wealthy couple wants to leave a collection of income-producing assets, such as investment partnerships that own shares valued at as much as $150 million, to their children. So they “freeze” the value of the estate at that moment, maybe 20 years before their death, pushing any future appreciation out of the estate and avoiding what could be a $50 million federal estate tax bill. 1. The best approach is an “intentionally defective grantor trust.” The couple makes a gift of $10 million—the maximum amount exempt from the gift tax for the next two years—to the trust, which lists the children as beneficiaries. 2. The trust uses that cash as a down payment to buy the partnership from the parents through a note issued to the parents, but the partnership contains a restriction on the trust’s use of the assets, thus impairing the partnership’s value by, say, 33%. That enables the trust to buy the $150 million partnership for just $100 million. 3. The income produced by the investment partnership helps pay off the note. The tax bill on that income is borne by the parents, essentially allowing gifts exempt from the gift tax. 4. When the note is paid off, the trust owns that $150 million worth of assets, minus the $90 million note and interest—plus any appreciation in the meantime. The trust has swept up a $150 million income-producing concern without triggering the federal estate tax.
The Option Option. Stock options allow executives to calibrate the taxes on their compensation in a big way. An executive is negotiating his employment contract for the coming five years. The company might offer millions in shares. But who wants to pay taxes on millions in shares? Better to take options. The executive owns the right to buy the shares at a time of his choosing; he’s been compensated, but he hasn’t paid any taxes. Gains from nonqualified stock options, the most common form, aren’t taxed until the holder exercises them. That means the executive controls when and if the tax bill comes. It isn’t just icing, either. The Bountiful Loss. Using, but not unloading, underwater stock shares to adjust your tax bill. An investor has capital-gains income from a sold-off stock position. Separately, the investor has other shares that are down an equal amount; if he were to sell them, he’d realize a loss to offset the gains and pay no taxes. But no one likes to sell low. So he wants to use that loss without actually selling the shares. IRS rules prohibit investors from taking a loss against a gain and then buying the shares back within 30 days. 1. At least 31 days before the planned sale, the investor buys an equal value of additional shares of the underwater stock. 2. The investor buys a “put” option on the new shares at their current price and sells a “call” option. Now he’s protected from the downside on that second purchase. 3. At least 31 days later, the investor sells the first block of underwater shares. He now has his tax loss, without having taken any additional downside risk from the purchase of the second block of shares. The Friendly Partner. With this deal, an investor can sell property without actually selling—or incurring taxes. An investor owns a piece of income-producing real estate worth $100 million. It’s fully depreciated, so the tax basis is zero. That means a potential (and unacceptable) $15 million capital-gains tax. 1. Instead of an outright sale, the owner forms a partnership with a buyer. 2. The owner contributes the real estate to the partnership. The buyer contributes cash or other property. 3. The partnership borrows $95 million from a bank, using the property as collateral. (The seller must retain some interest in the partnership, hence the extra $5 million.) 4. The partnership distributes the $95 million in cash to the seller. Note: The $95 million is viewed as a loan secured by the property contributed by the seller instead of proceeds from a sale. For tax purposes, the seller is not technically a seller, so any potential tax bill is deferred. The Big Payback. So-called permanent life insurance policies are loaded with tax-avoiding benefits. A billionaire wants to invest but doesn’t need the returns any time soon and wants to avoid the tax on the profits. A world of tax-beating products is available through the insurance industry. Many types of so-called permanent life insurance—including whole life, universal life, and variable universal life insurance—combine a death benefit with an investment vehicle. The returns and the death benefit are free of income tax. If the policy is owned by a certain type of trust, the estate tax can be avoided as well. “It is a crucial piece of any high-net-worth tax planning in my experience,” IRA Monte Carlo. Tax advisers recommend converting traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs—soon. High-income taxpayers can now convert traditional IRAs—which allow contributions to be deducted from taxes but incur taxes on distributions—into Roth IRAs, in which contributions are taxed but the distributions are tax-free. The conversion triggers a one-time tax bill, based on the value of the newly converted Roth IRA. As one might expect, tax experts are recommending that high-net-worth individuals convert their traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs before 2013, when ordinary income rates are likely to go up. 1. Let’s say an investor has one traditional IRA with a value of $4 million. 2. The traditional IRA is split up into four traditional IRAs, each worth $1 million. 3. The investor converts all four to Roth IRAs at the beginning of the year. 4. The IRS effectively allows taxpayers to undo the conversion for up to 21 months. So in 21 months, the investor looks at the performance of the IRAs. Say two of them go up, from $1 million to $2 million, and two drop, from $1 million to zero. Because the IRAs were split into four, the investor can change her mind on the two that went down and revert those back to traditional IRAs. Thus, she owes taxes on only the two contributions that went up in value, and nothing on the two that went down, cutting her tax bill in half. This lops 21 months of risk off the bet that paying taxes now will be paid off with tax-free appreciation later. The Venti. Putting a chunk of pay in a deferred-compensation plan can mean decades of tax-free growth. Executives want generous pay but don’t want immediate tax bills from salaries or cash bonuses. Instead, they elect to set aside a portion of their pay into a deferred-compensation plan. Such plans allow the compensation, plus earnings, to grow tax-deferred, potentially for decades.

Biz owners’ outlook turns gloomy. December 30th, 2010. Small-business owner’s outlook on the economic recovery fell this month after rising three straight months, reports the Discover Small Business Watch. In December, 62% rate the current economy as poor compared to 59% in November, according to a random survey of 750 business owners by Rasmussen Reports for Discover Card. Here’s the breakdown: No matter how the question was asked, owners were less optimistic than in November:51% said the economy is getting worse, compared to 46% in November; 25% said it’s getting better, vs. 33% in November. 25% expect economic conditions for their own businesses to improve in the first half of 2011; 28% expected improvement in November. 42% will decrease business-development spending, vs. 40% in November. 38% said they expect never to be able to retire, compared to 30% in 2009. “Through the four years we’ve been studying them, small-business owners have remained a bit fickle when it comes to their confidence in the economy,” said Ryan Scully, director of Discover’s business card. “Like the rest of us, they’re seeing some positive signs, but they aren’t ready to declare victory, especially not with 62% of them still rating the economy as poor.” A separate report may help explain the lingering gloominess. The U.S. Census just released tax collection data for local and state governments in the third quarter of 2010. In almost every category — individual income tax, corporate income tax, sales and gross receipts taxes and total — revenues were lower than in the second quarter: Individual: $60.5 billion vs. $76.7 billion, Corporate: $9.3 billion vs. $15.5 billion Sales and gross receipts: $72.1 billion vs. $77.3 billion, Total receipts: $284.3 billion vs. $320.6 billion .If business owners have lower wages, see their company revenues decline or experience lower sales they’re likely to be a little glum no matter what GDP and economic forecasts indicate. Add to that the fact that 96% saw their retirement savings decrease and they’re downright grumpy.Another survey, this one online by StrategyOne, shows that most American consumers expect companies to boost the economy in 2011. Almost 9 out of 10 (88%) said it was extremely or very important that companies help get the economy back on track in 2011. Only 17% gave U.S. companies an “A” or “B” grade on this measure for 2010.

Unemployment Stories, Vol. 32: ‘You Are Slowly Erased From the Lives of Your Friends’
For the 12 million Americans who are officially unemployed, life's problems run much deeper than the fact that their friends may be uncomfortable talking to them about job stuff. Each week, we bring you true stories of unemployment, straight from the unemployed. This is what's happening out there.

The sports writer. In 2006 I had a job I was proud of. It wasn't flashy, high-paying or filled with upward mobility. It was doing what I loved doing, writing and editing at my hometown newspaper. Ask any former or current journalist, being on the desk, especially in sports, is the best-worst-job you'll ever have. Things had been bad for a while. They quickly began to get much, much worse. The constant meetings with the theme of "the internet is the future" and "new ways to multi-task" became a weekly occurrence. The end came in phases; layoffs, move, layoffs, move, layoffs and another move. I escaped the first round of layoffs due to my ability to design and edit in both departments. I had spent equal time in News and Sports, if not for that I would have been out the door sooner. After that round of layoffs, the survivors were sent to work at a non-union site about 10 miles away. We were then handed the privilege of putting together two newspapers with a staff that barely managed to put together one just a few days earlier. Things settled down for a short while and we all became accustomed to being unable to put out the same quality product that we did in years past. At least we still had jobs in sports, right? Just as things had started to get normal-ish, there was a sudden round of layoffs again that caught everyone off guard. There were no rumblings of layoffs coming like in previous instances. Just a sudden cut in the work force during prep season, when we could afford it least and then another move to new building since ownership sold off land again. The new building had none of the character that newspapers normally have and need. It was just a row of cubes in an office with too many windows and no segregation between the various departments and the noise from the different deadlines. By this time, I was more than annoyed with my situation and looking for a way out; either by buyout or by layoff. I wanted an escape and a chance to do something different. That chance came in early 2008. We had another ‘tightening the belt' meeting in which it was announced that there would be a trimming of staff and a move from a beautiful area into the hood that was 30+ miles from our current location. The EIC announced that buyouts would be offered to those who didn't want to make the move. Before he finished the sentence, I had raised my hand and shouted out that I would take it. Many of my co-workers looked at me like I was crazy but, I knew it was my best bet. I couldn't afford to take another pay cut and triple my commute. There were a few others who joined my in taking the buyouts. All the people that chose the buyout were like me; young, designer-editor hybrids who are without kids and willing to gamble that there was something better out there. We were all completely wrong at first. Things were s**tty everywhere, not just in our little journalism world. My unemployment time started off nice; there was buyout money, vacation accrual money and unemployment checks. I am not going to lie, the first week was amazing. It was a total decompression from all the crap you deal with at a bad job in a dying industry. I loved not having to think and being able to watch sports for enjoyment again. After that first week off I got back to work looking for a new gig because I had to support not only myself but, my alcoholic father who was unwilling to take care of himself. That's when reality began to set in. My budget and safety net was built up to take care of my expenses for a good while, adding his to mine just caused things to go FUBAR. If I was a smarter man, I would have left that man to fend for himself back then and not so much later on. To occupy my time and to feel at least a little productive, I took to babysitting my twin nieces for my brother. It was easily the best time I would have on any given day for a few years. The twins provided me with a couple hours a day of happy times to cancel out the constant failures on the job-hunting front. No matter what I applied for I didn't get it. I scored in the top 1% on numerous county job tests and could barely manage an interview or two from those. Luckily for me, my brother landed a new job with different hours and greater pay. He offered me up the extra room in his place in exchange for becoming a full-time "Manny" while looking for work. More importantly than that, it gave me the chance to make a clean break from taking care of my dad and start off in a better direction. Life didn't start getting better quickly. Outside of my time being Kuncle and having princess parties with the twins I was essentially alone and cut off from the world. The worst part of unemployment isn't being poor; it is the isolation that comes from it. You are slowly erased from the lives of your friends and most of your family. The isolation became worse when the twins started preschool. On the days I didn't watch them I might not say more than 10 words aloud and those words would have been to my dog, not a person. The world shrinks quickly during your time being jobless to the point that you're cut off from everything except your depressing thoughts. Thankfully for me, those times didn't last forever. I was able to land a contract job through a family connection. I was hired to fix and t***sfer documentation for an IT/IS organization and unbeknownst to me, I began to thrive in this environment. I volunteered for every menial task that the others were tired of doing and started collecting my "IT tool belt" and had my contract extended out. I was essentially moved to a contract-to-hire path that was based on being able to learn specific sk**ls that no longer exist in workers under 50. It was also during that time that I met my future wife and actually started to feel good about my life and about my new direction. Finally, good things were happening. After learning the new sk**ls I was finally hired permanently early last year as a systems analyst. The sk**ls I learned in getting this job have had a weird effect; I now get cold job offers via LinkedIn to go work on HP3000 systems all over the place. It is nice to be wanted. I'm sure it will be a while before I've got my savings rebuilt and until I am out of bad debt and all the other crap that comes from being unemployed for almost two years. But, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I am fairly certain that it isn't a train coming to smash me. I've been reading this series for a while and noticed that there were not enough happy-ish endings. I want the struggling out there to know that it is possible to escape.

The CEO. I was the CEO of a small private-held company. In many ways I was just a glorified Office Manager and Company Consultant packaged up with a fancy title. According to the owner of the company I was the one responsible for doubling the size of the company in a couple short years of work. It was a blow when I was "downsized" to a lesser position, but the pay stayed the same and I managed to get the company to pay for another Bachelor's Degree in order to pick up some more outside consulting work. The new position was degrading, but I assumed things would get better. When I discovered that the owner was violating the industry's ethical standards and my knowledge could make me complicit, I had to quit. The company fought me for unemployment and even though the State said I was entitled to it, the fact I had quit on ethical grounds hadn't been challenged in court so they were going to deny me coverage. I would have to take it up with the State Supreme Court and I didn't have the excess funds to afford a $300 an hour attorney. Instead I finished out my last semester of college, got my certification, and started looking for work. All this was in the spring of 2011. I've exhausted my 401K, thoroughly enjoying the nice withdrawal penalties, borrowed from family, and managed to get by. I estimate I get 1 interview for every 50 applications I submit. Not just any applications, but appropriate work. My new career, the one I hold the low-level certification in, changed their certification rules a few years ago and nobody seems to know about it. I've applied for plenty of entry-level positions that want a certification that is now only given after two years of exempt-level experience and a comprehensive examination. Frustrating is being told you are under-qualified and over-qualified in the same interview. Frustrating is when the interviewer's first comment is that I'm over dressed for an interview. A sport coat and tie shouldn't be over-dressed for any job. I've been asked why I would "settle" for an entry level job when I could apply for a higher position. Odds are if they hired me I'd eventually get that other job, but they aren't hiring for it now and when they do, they are going to pick someone that already works for them. There aren't lesser jobs, just lesser people and I'm not one of them. At this point I'd just be happy to work. I know that compared to some I'm lucky. Just as I was on my last dime a government program opened up that let me go back to college. Sure, I'm earning a degree I'll never use, but I'm getting just enough to pay for school and living expenses. When I graduate this spring I'll get some sort of assistance looking for work. I'm still looking for work, but the longer I'm out of work the less desirable I become. I'm hoping that my time in school will make it look like I was doing something other than not working.

The MIT Grad. My story: earned a graduate degree in a humanist field from MIT in 2002 and wasn't able to find a job for six months thanks to a recession at that point. Worked that Halloween in a costume shop, TAed a class at Harvard. The following January, I found a full-time position — a job I'd previously held in 1994 and was the type of position I'd gone to graduate school to move away from. I cried most nights. A few years later I was offered a part-time project management job on an academic, one-year grant-funded project, and I thought, Yippee! Finally! and if it doesn't work out, I can find something else. The job went full-time & 2 years in I was offered another PM, grant-funded job elsewhere with a leader in the field. He also turned out to be the kind of tyrant you read about in fairy tales. I lasted there 3 years, at which point they cited the classic academic excuse of "no money," which I know wasn't true. The tyrant liked to surround himself with scared women; not being one, I didn't really fit in. That started over a year of unemployment for me, during which I applied for over a hundred jobs, had a few interviews but never did manage to score a full-time position. I started contracting for a book publisher a few months in, a terrible gig led by a pleasant but extremely dysfunctional team suffering under the management of a private equity firm. That and unemployment insurance helped me financially through that period. The job I finally did score was part-time and (wait for it) a grant-funded position for two years. That was in August 2011; I've just gotten word that project renewal doesn't look good. I continued to work for full-time work throughout this period and have come close a few times to getting hired, but no cigar. I am of mixed feelings, as I h**e this job more than any job I've ever held in my life. I share a cramped office with two coworkers, the executive director is, I think, having an affair and/or is in love with my supervisor, who kisses her ass and then spends his days working on his other consulting work while pushing difficult tasks for which I get no credit onto me. I offer to take on extra projects but am rebuffed. I head into the office most days chanting, "health insurance, health insurance" (the job comes with a good plan that my husband and I are both on). So now I'm in the position of having to look for another job, entirely fed up with grant-funded work, and too far removed from my earlier career to return to it. I'm in my late 40s and take great pains to impersonate someone in their late thirties for as long as I can. I figure that way I at least have a fighting chance of finding something, eventually. Maybe? I'm currently working on two books. Ha ha.
The worst decision of my life. In this economy, there are plenty of stories about people that are unemployed. If you're reading this, you're probably unemployed too. Cause really, we're the only people that listen to each other. The second someone finds a job, they quickly forget the tribulations of being unemployed. I remember when I was in high school and my brother was in college. When I would talk to him about my problems, he would shrug them off as trivial. I understood when adult with completely different lives scoffed at my teenage issues, but I was amazed that someone who was just recently stopped being a teenager easily forgot what it's like to be a teenager. That's the same dynamic between the unemployed and the employed. It seems like everyone has a solution. "Have you looked at…" or "You should look at…" Believe me, I've tried. I've looked everywhere, I've talked to anyone, I've done everything. I spend my days applying for jobs or networking. I spend my nights hoping I'll never wake up. Even worse are the pep talks. "The right thing will come eventually." Really? How do you know that? What indication do you have that would suggest that anything would get better. "Don't get down, employers will see that." Maybe, if they even look at my resume. I just want some to tell me it sucks. There is no science to job hunting. I did everything I was supposed to do. I started doing internships my sophomore year of college. I never wasted a summer. In fact, one school year I held down an internship and worked two part time jobs while going to school full time. Then I worked full time at a real job. Then I went to grad school for my Master's. Now I'm back in school for a certificate program because really, I didn't have anything else to do. Because being unemployed for too long makes you look lazy or incompetent. Why is being eager and desperate so easily confused with being lazy? So here I am. Eight years of experience, a Master's degree, and an Ivy League school. You'd think I could at least get an entry-level position. You'd think I'd at least be able to make the same amount that I made before I got my Master's. But instead, I've been unemployed for a year and a half. I'm working part-time at an internship that pays minimum wage. I've applied to over two hundred positions. Sometimes I feel like the best thing that I could do is jump in front of a car and have all my organs donated. Maybe then, I would be useful. There are plenty of poor decisions I made. The first is going back to school when I already had a job. It wasn't the best job and it didn't pay much, but I was doing something I cared about. I let everyone convince me that I wasn't good enough and that I had to go back to school. Then there were the multitude of unpaid internships. Internships where my supervisors raved about my performance and said they might hire me if something opens up. Well, I've done four unpaid internships, twice a position opened up and I wasn't hired. Unpaid internships, even at nonprofits, are merely ways to extort cheap labor out of desperate students. And then there's living in New York City. In NYC, maybe means no. Possibly means never. I'm not picky about where I live, but I'm currently attending Columbia so I have to live here. A New York City subway runs every four to ten minutes. Every four to ten minutes is an opportunity to k**l myself. If you're still reading, you have to be wondering what I do. It's sick really, I work in nonprofits. My Bachelor's is in social work, my Master's is in public administration. I always accepted that I would make less than my business school counterparts, but I didn't realize I wouldn't be employed. I didn't realize I wouldn't get the opportunity to help people in need. I didn't realize I would be the person that needs help. My advice is that if you have a job, don't go to grad school. It has been the worst decision of my life. And now, it has become my only choice. If you don't have a job, just know you aren't alone. Your friends and family may not sympathize, be we will, even if we are your competition.
The environmental scientist. I've been following the unemployment stories for a while now, and figured I might as well post my own. I almost feel bad sharing this, because so many stories I've read are way worse than mine, but here goes. My fiancé and I both graduated with M.S. Degrees in Environmental Science in May 2012. We did everything that our parents and teachers led us to believe was what we were supposed to do to become productive members of society- We both did very well in school, graduated cum laude in high school and undergrad. We didn't go for liberal arts degrees, having been warned that only science and engineering type degrees would eventually lead to jobs. We participated in undergraduate and graduate research, worked all throughout college, and I even managed to receive a graduate assistantship (which helped to cut costs a bit). We both held leadership positions in graduate school, and led undergraduate students on research projects. We conducted and helped to design real grant funded studies, with real results that we compiled and helped organize into final reports for stakeholders. We participated and presented scientific findings to environmental professionals and peers in statewide conferences, and are even in the process of publishing our first manuscripts (with another scientific article in the works). We literally did just about everything we could to make the most of our degrees and earn as much professional experience as possible. While I managed to land a temporary summer position in my field as a wetland technician in Alaska, this took me away from my soon to be husband for nearly four months. Since I returned home after a very long summer, neither of us have landed a single full time job, even though we have both been sending hundreds of resumes, cover letters, and applications to positions all over the country for nearly a year, and networking with contacts from school. We both make due on mind numbing, low-wage, part time work, no job satisfaction, and barely make enough to keep going. Despite our best efforts, we haven't even been able to land service positions- voluntary positions with a minimal monthly stipend and an award at the end of the service term. Without the help of our parents, we wouldn't be able to afford to live (we can only afford rent because we rent from my parents- who charge us much less than they could) and we are mired down by student loan debt and the depression of underemployment after working so hard to find anything, and failing time and time again. For the first time in my life, I feel like I've let my parents down- it was always so easy to please them while I was in school, but now I can't help but think that they see me as a failure- and even worse, I can't help but start to think of myself that way as well. I can't even count the amount of interviews I've received this year on a single hand, and I feel like my life is trickling by without me. I'm 24, and I can't afford to have children, much less continue paying rent, car payments, insurance, and student loans. If I don't find anything better by the time I'm 26, I'll be out of health insurance as well. I feel like I've fallen into a deep hole and every time I try to dig myself out, the walls just start caving in further around me.
