I am thinking of joining the national guard to help pay for tuition, I heard the pay is good as well. it would only require doing drills on the weekends and it could open many opportunities for education. I might even a consider a career in the military, my buddy and I are considering doing the buddy system, it seems like a good idea, and we both want the opportunity to serve our country.
we are both eligible for service physically and mentally.
thoughts?

You want an opportunity to serve your country. You're satisfied with the pay. Your friend would like to do the same . . . There are opportunities . . Go for it.

The best kept secret in the military is.....The Coast Guard.
Probably the best way to go.
We'll be fighting terrorism for the foreseeable future. You don't want to be part of a NG unit deployed to a hot zone with guys who just know how to drill.
My advice is to give the Coast Guard a through look...and if what you see appeals to you then grab it.
You'll probably come out with a trade plus the education benefits.

My foster daughter joined the Army Guard for the very reason you seem to be doing it. Money. She did pretty well for over 20 years and found herself in a position, as a Master Sergeant, running a huge mess hall somewhere just north of New Orleans. They fed 5000 troops every meal and she just ran the facility. That experience led to her going to Kuwait for a full two years doing exactly the same thing in a mess hall the same size. Then after she got to be home about 10 months she found herself headed for Afghanistan for a good 10 months.

She made a pile of money in those three hitches, enough to have a new home in Fayetville, Ark 80% paid for when she got back and she had enough saved to pay it off when she got back. Now the pay isn't going to be that good for you unless you have in the 20+ years she had. The most unhandy thing about her tour has been that she has been in Fayetteville since the early 90s and is in the Kansas Guard so has to drive some distance for those every two week drill periods.

Rene would say go to you since she has really enjoyed it all the time she has been there.

  You are prejudice based on your location. Having said that, your idea is one many young people overlook. In fact, because of the focus on terrorism, an individual's potential employment opportunities are more expanded. A person can take their training and expand it through education.

The best kept secret in the Coast Guard: You have to go out on rescue missions, but you don't have to return.

I will say those guys have very large cajones to do what they must do in the most adverse weather conditions.

Actually, I mispelled it. The correct spelling is cojones. Sorry about that. I didn't catch it until you spelled it and I was going to correct you but I checked my originall comment and discovered I was the miscreant.

It actually means 'testicles', but depending on how it is used it can be vulgar.
