There were 108,592,000 people in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2011 who were recipients of one or more means-tested government benefit programs, the Census Bureau said in data released this week. Meanwhile, according to the Census Bureau, there were 101,716,000 people who worked full-time year round in 2011. That included both private-sector and government workers.

That means there were about 1.07 people getting some form of means-tested government benefit for every 1 person working full-time year round.

The Census Bureau counted as recipients of means-tested government programs “anyone residing in a household in which one or more people received benefits from the program.” Many of these people lived in households receiving more than one form of means-tested benefit at the same time.

Among the 108,592,000 people who fit the Census Bureau’s description of a means-tested benefit recipient in the fourth quarter of 2011 were 82,457,000 people in households receiving Medicaid, 49,073,000 beneficiaries of food stamps, 20,223,000 on Supplemental Security Income, 23,228,000 in the Women, Infants and Children program, 13,433,000 in public or subsidized rental housing, and 5,854,000 in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Also among the 108,592,000 means-tested benefit recipients counted by the Census Bureau were people getting free or reduced-price lunch or breakfast, state-administered supplemental security income and means-tested veterans pensions.

When I was getting electronic engineering technology degree that required some higher mathematic beyond fraction. I had to drive a cab to support my self as I had give all my military retirement to my ex wife to support my kids. I pick up this machinist who started telling me how stupid I was because I. drove a cab . He was proud of his ability to work fraction. They are the first to point a finger at unemployed and call them lazy. They do not realize could bring in a million even more sk**led Asian worker then they are and replace them tomorrow at half the price. To get all our people back to work. We have to place high tariff on all goods that can be manufacture here. Stop telling our young people that they too lazy to work and show some faith leadership and concern for them. That include all of them black, white Hispanic space alien. WE also need to put people back to the land rising food. I was raised on a farm and know: we can raise food for a forth of the price we are paying to import it.

I seem to hear this quite often these days. Somehow, because I don't think the government should have these programs to help people :roll: , I am some sort of evil being.

I think this comes from something the Bible says about helping other people. But I think the Bible is talking about willingly giving. Not reach into your neighbor's pocket to help someone else. I think theft is just as wrong, or worse, than not helping.

When there is some program that causes some one to stay dependent on such program, that is not helping anyone. Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life.

Before anyone bad mouths me let me tell you where I come from. For a time I had a nine month old child and a pregnant wife and we lived in a convertible with the back window broken out during a couple of months in winter. That is the bottom of the barrel I have been to but I didn't live off any government program.

What I have, I got with hard work, and I just expect the same from you! How is that mean, bigoted, and stupid? I came from a very large family, worked since I was 15 stayed in school, waited till I was married to start a family and stayed married. Simple formula. I believe in work. I am not a liberal. I believe everyone should work for everything they get, the only exception if it is a mom with kids.
