Once again it is obvious that public safety is not really a priority in criminal justice circles.
This is a national problem, it is only highlighted for Detroit because they are finally off their butts and doing something about it.

A bit outdated, still good news, though.

It is no secret that rape is a huge problem in America. One of the biggest reasons for that is the fact that rape kits often go unprocessed, sometimes for many years. One of the worst offenders in this area is Detroit, Michigans so-called justice system.

Actress Mariska Hargitay, known for her roles as sex crimes detective Sergeant Olivia Benson on Law and Order: SVU, has teamed up with Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy to solve Michigans problem of untested rape kits. The duo will be working with state lawmakers to draft legislation that would set time limits and other guidelines regarding the testing of rape kits.

Rape kits seem to be low priority all around the country. If someone with name notoriety want to support raising awareness to get the politicians and bureacrats to take notice, I support that. Why is this a controversial subject? It should be a no brainer.

The whole team of Law and Order actors have taken a stand which revolves around violence against women. I am sure that all cities (and states) have similar problems with testing.
I have read as much and heard a segment on NPR about the issue.
I recall that one of the issues is that victims don't want to go forward.
This info about serial rapists should cut back on that as a reason not to ignore kits.
Here's hoping.

As far as the test kits, I hope that the evidence is still good and the SOBs get arrested, locked up and suffer in prison. On the other hand Detroit is so deep in debt they can't pay their police so it may never happen.
