Got news for you, it's also on gov. Browns agenda ( demo dork from Ca.) They all do it when they run out of money.
The excuse being that if nicotine costs more, then you can't afford it and you'll stop.
Well , maybe we should employ the same logic with our taxes. When they raise them , we should stop paying them when we think we probably can't afford it anyway

The consequence of people stopping, because they cannot afford it, is there will be less tax revenue from nicotine products; hence the need to raise another tax on something else.

Maryland raised cigarette taxes. Simply remedy, people drive to Virginia. Virginia obtains tax revenue.

Good point. In Ca. There was a huge increase in cigarettes being brought in from mexico. (Exact same kind as we're sold here but without the stamp ) I imagine that is going to happen again. B.T.W. The major brand of cigarettes ( . Winston ) etc. We're less than a third of the cost without the gov. Taxes.

A carton of cigarettes in Virginia is approximately $20 less then Maryland. Maryland's tax applies to all packs in the carton. They raised their alcohol tax. Again, Virginia benefits. People now just go to Virginia buy cigarettes, alcohol and, because they are over there, groceries. Again, because they are over there, they go the malls in Virginia to do other shopping. In areas not close to Virginia, they shop in Delaware or West Virginia for tax savings. The people who are being tax shafted are the individuals where crossing a state line is not convenient.

If it is going to businesses selling cigarettes, it would be convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. I find that questionable. Are you sure? Why cigarette selling businesses?

That's a fairly easy tax to get out of.

1.) Smoke E cigarettes (not taxed YET) an it's cheaper and healthier than smoking cigarettes- It's what I do now. Buy them online and you can even duck the sales tax.
2.) Plant some tobacco and roll your own. (Been there done that).
3.) Quit smoking

Not only does 1 and 2 get one out of the state tax, it also gets you out of the Federal tax and SALES taxes.

You should also brew your own beer too. That's taxed alot. :)

I try my best to minimize taxes. Its a part of my effort towards 'smaller government". heh.

What businesses does this tax go to if I may ask?
