An Unconditional Basic Income Is The Solution But The Important Word Here Is Basic
Even the so-called "poor" people in the U.S. don't live a "basic" lifestyle! In "poverty level" families, we see plasma TVs, multiple cell phones, nice and multiple cars, microwave ovens, etc. These are not "basic" items needed to live. These are items that allow one to live "comfortably". If one can "live comfortably" without contributing to the entity that provides these items, why contribute? Why work to pay into the system? People on welfare used to be ashamed to admit it, and they had to live a "basic" lifestyle. Now, that shame and desire to live comfortably has been replaced by complacency and laziness.

The people who have to work to pay for the basic income of people who are too sorry to work and too scared to steal may not think so highly of a "guaranteed basic income".
