That makes 2 of us - what are we doing here? The politics are all messed up, and I doubt seriously if they are ever going to bet better. What say you?

I say there is no reason why we shouldn't be able to have a conversation over a cup of coffee/tea/beer/bottle of water/glass of milk/cup of hot cocoa/ or something as simple as a cup of Tang, and exchange thoughts, and opinions with respect for each other. I have my spiritual thoughts, and beliefs as do you.
These are ours, and we should respect each other in them. (Unless you want to cut off my head)
We will never find agreement from everyone. We can try, and treat each other with civility and compassion though. I am the worst at it...but I try.

It came from Archie Bunker!! Write that down!
I mean it though! We are not all the same. From the same backgrounds; same educations, experiences, etc.
We are people who have to live our lives according to our principles/beliefs.
I think that it is good to share your beliefs with others, as long as you aren't trying to cram them down someone's throat. (Or trying to cut my head off)

Archie, it has consistently amazed me all my life how many people are absolutely certain their beliefs and ideas amount to The Truth, no questions asked. Such a stance stupefies me. It is the exact opposite of being rational and reasonable, nonetheless crucially self-critical. It is scarier than Zombie Apocalypse. (And I think "zombie" is apt in describing such people.)

I agree that we all get caught up in our own dogma somewhat. I feel that we are who we are, and we think, and feel how we think, and feel.
I know that my beliefs, and principles won't change because it is just how I'm wired.
You are probably the same. Should we, as human beings beat up, and hate each other over a bunch of stuffed shirt liars in Washington D.C.?

Yes, of course we should--if we are total idiots or on the take ourselves.

You all make good points, and it is in our nature as "Americans" (I have to typify that because I have lived in other countries, including Saudi) to be gracious and forgiving for the most part. Yes, we have those who don't obey laws, who harm others and ruin lives, but that is part of the nature of humanness and human error.
That being said, we are now facing several things that we have in many cases brought down on our own heads, but not everything has been our fault. 1) We have become much more vain over the years. Much of this is due to the progress we have made as a nation and as a people. Children are not raised as they used to be. We can't spank a child now - it might hurt their little psyche! We can't teach them like we used to. Schools began teaching in our country with one book - The Bible. Why? Because it was typically the only book people had in their homes. We were a poor nation then. Now, we can't even open a Bible in school, much less have on there!
2) As we grew, we became proud and thought more of ourselves than we did of others. It changed to this arrogance shortly after WWII. I have several books of all the rebuilding and reshaping of the countries devastated by that war.
I am not praising anyone here, but perhaps GW Bush was one of the last to try to help a nation rebuild and restore itself. Things changed severely with Nam. I remember listening to what the Catholic Church wanted teachers to relay to their CCD classes. One in particular was "Who is responsible for this killing of brother by brother?" Maybe we didn't start the war, and maybe we shouldn't have become involved with the war; but we did because that was the humanitarian thing to do. The same goes for now with ISIS, but this time around we have a president who is not on our side.
If somebody doesn't see that - oh well - but it happens to be true.

And why the assault on this country? Why rip our Bibles out of schools, and off the buildings? In the south there was a post office that was used for church services. There were 4 religions in the city and none was able to build their own building to worship in, so the federal post office opened its doors to these religions and they took turns meeting. Each Sunday a different organization would attend their church service in that 'government' building. Today we can't even say "amen" in a govt. building!

It is our fault all the way down the line. And so much of it comes from the root of all evil - money! We have become rich yet we are poor and wanting. I could write a whole book about it - but the truth is we have brought it on ourselves; and I am afraid there is no turning back. What's that saying about 'reaping the whirlwind'? That's us to a tee. Will we as a country humble ourselves? I doubt it. Our youth is too busy ingratiating themselves with whatever seems pleasurable to them for that moment. And there is no one to pull the plug on them; no one to guild them. They are starting younger and staying reckless and abandoning every form of decency far longer than past generations. The ilk of Hollywood shows them decadence and sex and hate and revenge. Watch any movie today. Rarely can one get through it without a full-blown sex scene; certainly can't leave out some kind of murder or horrific crime, or the theme is religious horror. And I remember when it started; somewhere in the early '70's.
There was a book out and they made a movie of it called the Exorcist. I started reading the book and in it it quoted some things from the Bible. I got my Bible concordance out and double checked it - it was NOT quoting from the Bible at all; but people never questioned it.
And then there is the love of God or the love of mammon. I think we are much too deeply into the love of material things now as well. But this is just an old lady talking about the things she has witnessed over the years. I have lived in Europe, in Saudi, and in the U.S. and have lived in over 9 states and have only missed out on being in every State in the union by 5. I have not been to Maine, Alaska, N. Dakota, Kansas, Connecticut.
And I can truthfully say we have fallen a long, long way down from what we once were. If we wish to continue as the country we once were, we have to draw lines in the sand. Without it we have no country. We cannot tolerate those ideologies that are in direct opposition to ours. It can be likened to trying to have a love affair with a cobra. Our forefathers refused to allow it, and we need to do the same. But there are those who would like to rewrite history and say it can be done and it was done at our founding. No - sorry - but it was not done then and should not be allowed to take root and fester now. It is in the rooting process now, and we will reap what we sow.
