Loki,
I'm really enjoying your "Today in History" posts.
Among some of my reading on the Civil War, I've read the following: Confederate Ironclad vs Union Ironclad, by Ron Fields, Duel Between the First Ironclads, by William Davis, and The Monitor and the Merrimack, Both Sides of the Story, by H. Ashton Ramsey. I recommend any of these for a more detailed history of the 2 day fight between these 2 hastily built and hard to maneuver warships.
That the turrent of the Monitor has been raised and is presently undergoing restoration should tell us a lot toward the ship's conttruction in the future. It was either The Smithsonian magazine, or the National Geographic magazine that, LADT year, has an excellent article on the turrent and what's been restored and found in it. I wish there was a way to retrieve the rest of the Monitor. That would be sensational !!

Yes, it would. Too bad the Merrimack/Virginia has been "salvaged" since the 1870s. I mean, what didn't burn.
