Protecting Politicians from the Liberty of the Masses

Get prepared for less innovation and a slower Internet with added costs. Oh, and technological innovation? That'll slow down too.All thanks to the government now getting their mitts on the Internet through the so-called "net neutrality" bill.

Obamacare didn't bring down healthcare costs and expand coverage; Dodd-Frank and Sarbanes-Oxley didn't make the financial system safer. And there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that the proposed Cap and Trade legislation would've lowered the earth's temperature.

Get wise America.

Some of the biggest pieces of legislation past in the last couple of decades don't even pretend to do what's advertised.

The Department of Homeland Security seems to be a bigger threat to citizens than it is to ISIS.

I don't fell safer because of DHS, and getting past my feelings, I'm not safer in actual fact either.

The Department of Education has made our country dumber, not smarter. Fracking accomplished in a few years what the Department of Energy couldn't do in four decades.

There is a great big, sick, inside joke going on in Washington, DC and you and I aren't let in on the fun. Part of the joke is that we are supposed to take seriously guys like Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush, who are really just Bill Clinton Democrats with the same recycled reforms as the Left, slightly modified for the GOP.

The country has fundamentally changed. There is more diversity of opinion today, there are more communities of interest today. Information is shared with a rapidity that was never dreamed of even twenty years ago.

Information has been democratized.

That's because of the Internet.

It's been good for our country, good for the world, it's been one of the most egalitarian of inventions. It has raised us all up, and fostered remarkable changes in political systems.

But our politicians certainly have not changed at all. Here at home they have not caught up with the rest of us. They think this is the same country that Walter Cronkite dominated when he opposed the Vietnam War. Or least that's what they'd like it to be.

And that is what "net neutrality" really is about: protecting the politicians from the liberty of the masses.

Actually, net neutrality is to prevent "class warfare" from occurring on the Ethernet. Those who like to watch Netflix, would either have to watch many more commercials, or experience far slower downloading, or more "burping" - or pay more money for "faster" bit speeds - without net neutrality. The folk who own the satellites and other equipment involved in the "net", were dismayed to see many companies purchasing bandwidth from them - make more money than THEY did - and they felt entitled to a "slice of the pie" from anyone making money through their equipment.

That being said, the purchase of new equipment to keep up with the latest innovations that result in much higher t***sfer speeds, is passed on to the consumer already. The idea of having different speeds depending on the amount of money paid, is a contrived option. Meaning, that it is irrelevant, as the investment in the equipment would occur anyway. Comcast and others, would have to intentionally SLOW DOWN t***sfer speeds, for those that didn't pay more, because the newer, faster speeds - are STANDARD.

That would be like your local electric company charging you EXTRA money, because you were using the electricity they sold you, to make money yourself. If you didn't pay the higher price, they'd reduce your electricity from 200 amps to 100 amps and impose "brown outs" as a punishment. The internet is so much a part of everyday life now - just like electricity is - and so, should be treated in exactly the same way.

Out of all the words you used, the one that is most important is "local", hence leave it to localities. I mean if you truly trust them to run it, your medications need to be changed immediately!

It isn't now, nor has it ever been run by any local authority. These are NATIONAL companies, who sell bandwidth to local providers, from whom YOU purchase your internet access. The FCC is determined to protect everyone from predatory practices by the national companies as can only be done at the Federal level.

The FCC will not be "running" the net, they will only be setting the rules by which bandwidth can be sold, thus treating the net as a "public necessity", rather than a commodity. I'm reminded of Microsoft's c**p, whereby all your "stuff" automatically went to the Cloud - then they started charging you to get it back. That was a brilliant business stunt. I'm glad that someone is trying to prevent the net from being abused in the same way.

As a matter of note, I get my internet access through cable, from which THEY buy it from Comcast. They offer 3 different speeds for 3 different prices, the fastest speed being the most expensive. How do they accomplish this? By using different modems, the "cheapest" modem SLOWS DOWN the t***sfer rate - but the modems cost the same amount. This means that my cable company is intentionally slowing down internet speeds - for people who don't pay for "premium" service. It costs the cable company NOTHING to allow the fastest speed, because they are paying for it anyway, they are merely gouging their customers, as the base price is actually paying for the "standard" speed - which is the highest speed available.

The FCC means to stop these type of predatory and unfair practices.
