The Insanity of Common Core Math Revealed in Under Two Minutes

Just another example of the federal government…think of Michele Obama…intruding into our kid’s lives and NOT making it better.

The video below provides an excellent demonstration of the absurd nature of Common Core Math in less than two minutes. Caleb Bonham, from Campus Reform, goes to George Mason University for a type of ‘Man on the Street’ segment. With whiteboard in hand, he approaches various students and faculty to discuss how to solve a Math problem, 32 – 12. He first solves it the traditional way then does so the Common Core way.

The faces of the students and faculty members say it all, though there is great commentary as well.

Background[edit]

In the 1990s, the "Standards & Accountability Movement" began in the U.S. as states began writing standards outlining (a) what students were expected to know and to be able to do at each grade level, and (b) implementing assessment designed to measure whether students were meeting the standards.[2] As part of this education reform movement, the nation's governors and corporate leaders founded Achieve, Inc. in 1996 as a bipartisan organization to raise academic standards and graduation requirements, improve assessments, and strengthen accountability in all 50 states.[3] The initial motivation for the development of the Common Core State Standards was part of the American Diploma Project (ADP).[4]

A 2004 report, titled Ready or Not: Creating a High School Diploma That Counts, found that both employers and colleges are demanding more of high school graduates than in the past. According to Achieve, Inc., "current high-school exit expectations fall well short of employer and college demands." The report explained that the major problem currently facing the American school system is that high school graduates were not provided with the sk**ls and knowledge they needed to succeed in college and careers. "While students and their parents may still believe that the diploma reflects adequate pr********n for the intellectual demands of adult life, in reality it falls far short of this common-sense goal." The report said that the diploma itself lost its value because graduates could not compete successfully beyond high school, and that the solution to this problem is a common set of rigorous standards.[5]

I see you're real good at cut and paste. Didn't even take any time to edit it. But I digress...

Did you see how 30-12 was calculated using the Common Core method? And you think that this is a more efficient AND effective way to calculate 30-12? It takes 5-10 times longer than the way that’s been taught successfully for hundreds of years. AND Common Core is confusing and burdensome. Why is it that all of a sudden the “tried and true” method of teaching math is suddenly an issue that has arisen within the last 20 years? And how will this method be applied when learning such subjects as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and such? Based on what I’ve seen, Common Core is NOT the answer.

I listened to a woman explain how common core teaches adding 9 plus 6.
First, because our math is a base ten system, ten is our "friend". So you add one to the nine to make it ten. Then you minus the one from the six to make it five. And there you have your answer.
Do schools still require memorization of the times tables?
I can't even fathom how common core is screwing up multiplication with our friend "10".

Yes, it is what I was afraid of, common core is useless for math. I wonder what they teach about American Hstory? The revolution, the Barbary Wars, the was of 1812, etc ec. Seems likely this is generally going to prove to be a very bad idea.

I did not offer an opinion of common core. I would point out that it was conceived many years ago, and was not an Obama invention.

Common Core is the product of Janet Napolitano, who chaired the NGA in 06/07. Sadly, it isn't a product of the Department of Education. Federal law specifically prohibits “an officer or employee of the Federal Government to mandate, direct, or control a State, local educational agency, or school’s curriculum” and bans the federal use of funds to “endorse, approve, or sanction any curriculum designed to be used in an elementary school or secondary school.”

CC is a product of how bad states are at the education of our children not an attempt by the feds to take over their education...
