A very important topic, if you think about it. And I'd like to know your thoughts.

Here is one connection:

If the office of the President is always "highly valued" (definition of Respect) by the people, then the office itself more easily accumulates power--as if people feel that since the power inherent in the office is already valuable, then more power must be even more valuable. Thus power grows until the officeholder becomes, in the eyes of the people, omnipotent and infallible. He has become deified, like the ancient Roman Emperors.

No office-holder should ever be deified.

There's a double negative in there somewhere. I assume you mean we should not worship the President of the United States?

You assume correctly. I corrected my error on 'never'.

Sorry.

Oh, cut it out, skott. Little Miss Do-Goody. Never a bad word to say about anyone holding a government office. Grow up, lady.

Unfortunately, some people wouldn't know the t***h if it gave them a lap dance.

I believe that I could pick someone off the street, at random, and they could do a better job as President. That's how much I respect Obama.

I would agree, but slander...due or not...goes with holding public office. I have never known a politician who avoided slanderous comments. Those who deify are no less guilty than those who would slander.

Both are inevitable.

The office has too much power. I don't respect it. The next turn will be deification, if it isn't already.

I hope we (the majority of the populace) don't end up worshiping an emperor.
