FIRST BIG BATTLE BREWS BETWEEN OBAMA AND THE NEW REPUBLICAN CONGRESS

President Barack Obama has already set forth on a collision course with the new Republican Congress. He has signaled his intention to use his veto to block the Keystone oil pipeline, a project the Republican leadership considers critical to growing the economy and creating new jobs. Incoming Republicans plan to pass legislation authorizing construction of the pipeline as soon as the 114th Congress commences in January 2015.

Any legislation passed by Congress must be signed by Obama to take effect, and his remarks at his end-of-the-year press conference made clear his opposition to the pipeline. At the same time, he said he hoped for cooperation with the congressional opposition: “I’m being absolutely sincere when I say I want to work with this new Congress to get things done.”

The Guardian reported on the controversy in a recent article:

However, infuriated Republicans had already questioned his sincerity after Mr. Obama signed an executive order allowing about four million undocumented immigrants to remain in the US immediately after the Democrats lost the mid-term e******ns.And deploying his veto to block a Republican priority so early in the new Congressional term would further undermine already fractious relations between the president and his political opponents.Keystone XL would run from the Canadian tar sand fields in Alberta to Nebraska where it would connect with an existing pipeline network to deliver oil to the Gulf of Mexico for export to global markets. The project is a political flash-point in the US. Its critics, mainly Democrats, cite environmental concerns, claiming that the pipeline would damage the climate by facilitating increased oil sand extraction, which produces greater greenhouse gas emissions than conventional oil production. They also argue that there is a major danger of oil spills and other environmental damage along the route. Its supporters, mainly Republicans, argue that the pipeline will be an economic boon and accuse the green lobby of deliberately hyping the environmental issues.
Obama says his opposition to the pipeline is related to concerns about c*****e c****e. He has also said he things the economic benefits would accrue primarily to Canadian, not American companies, would not help American gas prices, and would contribute only a couple of thousand new jobs to the American economy.

Ironically, the success of horizontal drilling combined with the greatly feared hydro fracturing process the oil reserves available in the shale oil had been successful past the most wild expectations has increased supply and decreased costs. So the pipeline, while nice, is no longer a "rush" priority. When passed, the pipeline project will be slow moving forward. Not because it is not needed, but because it is not needed today, but down the road a piece... . So it will go thru, Obama or no Obama. If he's smart, he'll just let it sit on his desk and become law with no signature after 10 days. If he's going to play the spoiler, he'll veto.
My bet is that despite Gruber's revelations, he's no that bright and he'll veto. Well' let's sit back and watch the foolishness unwind.....
