The ship that wouldn't die

Our liberty came at tremendous price and many brave Americans paid for it with their blood.

There have been many stories of the attack on the USS Laffey But, this is the first one I've seen where they had actual film Footage.
They endured an 80-minute attack, shot down 11 planes, were hit by 6 Kamikazes and 4 bombs on 16 April 1945 off of Okinawa. The ship gained the reputation as "The Ship That Wouldn't Die."
WWII in the Pacific.

A kamikaze attack in 1945… This clip gives you a feel for what it was like in the gun turret.

My own ship took a couple of Kamikaze hits. One took out a five inch gun mount, the other hit midships, just above the water line. That pilot died in vein. All he did was dent the haul. A fresh coat of of paint and it was good as new.

I wasn't there. I'm not THAT old. It wasn't my ship until I helped recommission it in '85.

Nah. The only thing I had to worry about were small boats, loaded with explosives, and some not too bright rag heads. We had rapid fire grenade launchers with a range of almost two miles. They didn't stand a chance.

Those things were awesome! They can fire 40 millimeter grenades at over 400 rounds a minute. I was lucky enough to test fire one. Too bad I can't legally own one.

I was amazed at how many men were involved. Had no idea. Thanks.

To continue the last comment on the film, "We must never forget the stupidity of war and the insanity of some of our war mongering politicians."
